History…• The history of mobile phones begins with

early efforts to develop radio telephone technology and from two-way radios in vehicles and continues through to emergence of the modern mobile phone and associated services.

• Cell phone is an electronic device used for mobile communications over a cellular network of specialized base station known as cell sites.

0 Generation

• 0G refers to pre-cellphone mobile telephone technology, such as radio and two-way radios (known as mobile rigs) were used in vehicles such as taxicabs, police cruisers, and ambulances.

• The Auto radio puhelin (ARP) launched in 1971 in Finland as the country's first public commercial mobile phone network

1st Generation

• The first commercially automated cellular network was launched in Japan by NTT in 1979.

• The second launch of 1G networks was the simultaneous launch of the Nordic Mobile Telephone (NMT) system in Demark,Finland,Norway and Sweden in 1981.

• The very first mobile phones are now referred to as 1G mobile phones. The first handheld phone to be released on the us market was the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X in 1983

2nd Generation• The first "modern" network technology on digital cellular

technology was launched by Radiolinja in 1991 in Finland on the GSM.

• The first data services appeared on mobile phones starting with person-to-person SMS text messaging in Finland in 1993.

• 2G services are frequently referred as Personal Communications Service, or PCS, in the United States

3rd Generation

• In 2001 the first commercial launch of 3G in Japan by NTT DoCoMo.

• One of the newest 3G technologies to implemented is High-Speed Downlink Packet Access.

Applications

• The bandwidth and location information available to 3G devices gives rise to applications Like:

• Mobile TV – a provider redirects a TV channel directly to the subscriber's phone where it can be watched.

• Video on demand – a provider sends a movie to the subscriber's phone.

• Video conferencing – subscribers can see as well as talk to each other.

4th Generation• The 4th generation is based on WiMax or Flash-OFDM wireless

metropolitan area network technologies that promises the broadband wireless access.

• 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution where facilities such as IP telephony, ultra-broadband Internet access, gaming services and streamed multimedia may be provided to users

• High quality of service for next generation multimedia support (real time audio, high speed data, HDTV video content, mobile TV, etc.) [
