From the Principal’s Desk

The past fortnight has been a great example of the range of activities students at Adam Road PS engage in on a regular basis. The activities have included cultural, musical, scientific and sporting pursuits. Added to this, we have a focus on literature during Book Week. A feature of last week’s activities were the NAIDOC Celebrations conducted on Tuesday. Our combined Junior and Senior Choirs performed beautifully and our Junior choir is now preparing to put on a performance at Elanora Villas for the residents. I would like to commend Mrs Danielle Smith for the outstanding work she is doing with our choirs. It provides a great sense of achievement for students involved in our choirs to be a part of such high quality performances.

Some of our Senior Classes visited Newton Moore Senior High School on Wednesday to participate in their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Fair. STEM is an area of increasing focus in schools and Mrs Bradshaw is already planning for our students not just to visit the fair next year but to contribute to the displays and activities that are on offer.

Two very committed teachers and 30 students met at school in the dark at 6.15am on Friday morning to travel to Perth to compete in the State Cross Country Championships. Our students performed very well and conducted themselves in an exemplary manner. The most pleasing reports I have heard from both our participation in the previous week’s Interschool

Winter Carnival and the State Cross Country has been the spirit, sportsmanship and support for all that Adam Road students have demonstrated without exception. It is pleasing to see the pride our students take when representing our school.

Too often we focus on the negative and things that have gone wrong forgetting that for the vast majority of time for the vast majority of our students, great things are happening and our students are developing into fine young people of whom we can all be proud. I would like to acknowledge the hard work, commitment and many ‘extras’ that staff members at Adam Road PS do on a daily basis to ensure that we maintain the high standards we aspire to at our school.

NAPLAN Reports for 2017 were sent home on Friday with Year 3 and 5 students. During last week these students were also involved in a NAPLAN Online Trial where the students completed trial NAPLAN Tests on iPads. This was a valuable learning experience for both our students and staff as next year NAPLAN Testing will be conducted in this manner.

Our school office is an extremely busy place, as you will have noticed if you have visited morning or afternoon. It is very difficult for staff to leave to pass on phone messages to students so unless it is an absolute emergency please do not ring expecting this to happen. Thank you for your anticipated understanding with this matter.

State Cross Country

Winter Carnival

On Friday 18th August, 31 students from Adam Road left school at 6.15am under the charge of Mrs Sheedy and Mrs Elward to take on the state’s best runners at the School Sports WA State Cross Country Race.

Competitors from year 3 to 6 had been training for 8 weeks before school. Perth put on beautiful weather and the students brought big hearts and weeks of training with them

to compete very strongly. With over 1500 competitors running throughout the day there was between 226 and 335 competitors in each race. The year 6 girls again ran very strongly with the best team result of 15th. Notable performances from the day went to Carrie (56th), Jorja (69th), Hannah (72nd) and Ostin (81st) who all made the top 100. Overall the school came a very respectable 17th. The behaviour and sportsmanship was also of the highest standard with the students representing Adam Road with pride.

More than 120 Year 5 and 6 Adam Road students participated in a Winter Carnival against teams from Tuart Forest and Dalyellup Primary Schools last Friday. In cold (and at the end) extremely wet conditions our students performed with great spirit in hockey, soccer, netball and football fixtures at various Hay Park venues. Thanks to Mrs Sheedy, Mrs Cross, Ms Hadley, Mrs Cogan, Mr Murphy, Mrs Elward and Mrs Dahlstrom and parents who helped make the day a success. Pictured is Adam Road 1 netball team which went through the carnival undefeated – (back, left) Rani, Jayme-Lee, Kiya, Abbey, Sophie; (front, left), Emelia, Latesha, Melanie

Children’s Book Week 2017

Fruit & Vege Tasting - Room 1

We are celebrating Children’s Book Week this week.

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, and Australian authors and illustrators. Teachers and libraries conduct activities relating to the theme to highlight the importance of reading.

This year’s theme is “Escape to Everywhere”. Students are participating in special reading activities throughout the week to celebrate books and ways in which they enrich our lives.

Colouring in Competition-Colouring in entry forms will be

available from the library, students interested can pick them up during lunchtime. The completed entries will be displayed in the library, they will be due back this Friday 25th August and the winners will be announced next week.

Students and staff are encouraged to dress up as a book character, author or something relating to the theme “Escape to Everywhere” and participate in the Book Week Dress Up Parade, to be held in the Centre Circle (weather permitting) at 8.50am this Friday 25th of August. We look forward to seeing you there.

On Wednesday the 16th of August Room 1 had a fruit and vegetable tasting. Students bought in a plate of food to share and everyone was encouraged to try things they may have never eaten before. The students came up with the idea as part of our Healthy Living unit.

The strawberry and berry kebabs were the most popular and the banana passion fruit made for an interesting experience. Students also tried Cameron’s apple, cherries, fermented cabbage, cucumber and paw paw.

It was a great way to start the day!

Councillor’s Corner

This term the councillors and captains have been doing some terrific things around our school. There are lunchtime activities and other awesome competitions.

One of the new lunch time activities is a knitting club named the Knitting Knights. It takes place at lunch times on a Wednesday in Room 14. So if you want to learn to knit then head there on Wednesday and have a try! Another thing that’s happening is checkers, every day at recess and lunch in the undercover area.

In the mornings we have some magnificent senior students giving up their time to read with the juniors. If you want to practise your reading, come to school at 8:20am and a senior will be there to help.

Thanks to all of you we have raised $760.40 from selling lollipops. Don’t forget that every Friday they will be sold at the symposium. If you want a sweet treat then come and get one on Friday.

We also have a bin poster competition going on right now and your poster could be on our school bins. If you’ve got some creative slogans and designs then give them to Rani. Well that’s it for the Councillor’s Corner this fortnight. See you again soon.
