WINTER 2018

Pregnancy Help Center exists to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of women and men facing an unplanned pregnancy. That is where the services often start, but it is certainly not where they end. The goal of PHC is to be the first resource sought when a young woman gets the news that she is pregnant. Her journey may begin in our medical clinic, where she can receive free pregnancy testing, an ultrasound, consultation on her options (if desired), community referrals, and prenatal vitamins. Most importantly, she is given the gift of hope and compassion.

In 2018 (to date), nearly 50 pregnancy tests and over 40 ultrasounds were conducted in the medical clinic. The goal is always to encourage the woman to choose life and then come alongside her (and the father) in the parenting journey. That is done through the various parenting programs that PHC offers.

More than 50 new clients were welcomed into the Center in 2018. In addition, we celebrated the lives of nine babies born to mothers enrolled in our Earn While You Learn (EWYL) program, with three more due in the coming days. Our fatherhood mentor equipped fathers in our community during more than 70 client visits. In addition, we awarded seven brand new car seats to mothers who completed the Car Seat Incentive program.

The biggest change seen from 2017 to 2018 is in the number of clients who are requesting classes in the Step Up parenting program. As word has spread and the need for parenting classes for parents with children in foster care has grown, the Step Up parenting program had over 100 more client visits this year as compared to last year. In 2017, there were nearly three times as many EWYL client visits as Step Up client visits. However, the number of Step Up client visits is now equal to the number of client visits in the EWYL program.

As we plan ahead in 2019, our biggest needs are effective and continued outreach to the local universities and high schools. Students need good information on healthy sexual decision making (i.e. abstinence education), as well as the impact of unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. “When I speak to students, they are reaching that age where they are gaining more freedom to make their own choices,” said PHC Executive Director Sarah Roof. “I always tell them that they may be free to make their own choices, but they are not free to choose the consequences. To be honest, I hope that they never need the services PHC provides, but I want them to know we’re here if they ever do!”

In addition, with the growing number of children in out-of-home care, PHC anticipates an even more expanding need for the Step Up parenting program. “Every level of our community is seeing the impact of drugs,” said Roof. “That is certainly no different at PHC. We want to be sure we are continuing to seek God’s guidance on how we can be part of the solution.”

Dr. Lisa Finn is an integral part of PHC’s medical clinic. She serves as the volunteer medical director and oversees the functions of the clinic, a role she has served in faithfully since the medical clinic opened in 2016. Outside of PHC, Dr. Finn specializes in internal medicine and works with Kentucky River Foothills Development Council.

“I enjoy working with the staff and volunteers at PHC,” said Dr. Finn. Though I don’t often have direct contact with the clients, I can see the valuable impact PHC has on individuals, families, and the community. I have learned a lot and been challenged by this role! God has assembled this team, and it’s been a blessing to work with everyone there”

Dr. Finn is a member of First Baptist Church. She and her husband, Kevin, have three sons.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - DR. LISA FINN

“Do you know what happened to me last night?” asked Sabrina* when she arrived for her parenting class. She fumbled through her purse while talking, then pulled out a $50 bill. She reported being in the checkout line at the grocery store where she had a can of baby formula placed at the top of her cart. An older lady in front of her picked up the can and placed the folded bill beneath it. Sabrina said she tried to return the money, but the woman would not accept it. Her boyfriend later asked, “Why do people keep giving you money?”

I told her that God may be after her. Tears welled up in her eyes as she said, “I know. That’s what I told my boyfriend.”

We talked about God’s goodness and how His preferred method of reaching us is through that goodness. I asked about her relationship with Christ and if she were saved. She stated plainly that she used to think she was saved, but she now under-stands that she isn’t. We discussed the meaning of salvation and God’s gracious offer of forgiveness, a place in His family and the hope of Heaven. She allowed me to pray with her but said she also wanted to pray at home when she had more time. “I have a lot to say,” she said.

Truth be told, God is after all of us, and He is ready and willing to listen when we “have a lot to say” to Him. He has extended offers of forgiveness, restoration, wisdom, patience, strength and opportunities to represent Him in a world in need of mercy. Have you wondered what you could do to show His love to others? Perhaps it is God calling you. Let us be faithful in slowing to listen when He has something to say to us.

THE MOST WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS GIFT!

Greetings from us here at PHC this Christmas season! This time of year is always a good time to reflect on God’s goodness to us over the past year and to look ahead for His plans in the New Year. God has allowed PHC to exist for nearly three decades. He uses His people to continue to bless our ministry – faithful volunteers who graciously give of their time and skills; loyal donors who sacrificially give of their finances and goods; prayer warriors who intercede on behalf of our Center and our clients; and the Church, who comes alongside of us as we stand for Life.

You make our accomplishments (see p. 1) possible! As we look ahead and seek God’s plan for 2019, we ask that you continue to partner with us. Perhaps you can make a financial donation here at year’s end. Gifts made by Dec. 31 will help us as we budget for next year. As always, your gift is tax deductible. We pledge that it will be used as we reach out to women and men facing unplanned pregnancies, as well as spread His truth through our parenting classes.

Let us reflect on the “unplanned” baby born 2000 years ago. A baby who would change the world. Then, let us discern how we can help the families among us, some facing the news of an unplanned baby, in order to share His goodness and His love.

Thank you for your continued support! May you be blessed this Christmas!

You may remember the Rothwells. They spoke at the 2018 Night for Life banquet, and we shared their story in the Fall newsletter. George, Storie and big sister, Bella, welcomed Baby Ezra on Dec. 13. Please join us in praising God for this gift of Life and for praying for the Rothwells. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have

found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”

“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” ~ Luke 1:30-32, 38
