Pastor Frank’s MessageDear members of Christ Lutheran,

With all the excitement of this past week in the announcement of a candidate for the Lead Pastor position at CLC, let me lift up the following to keep us focused on the mission we have as Christ's church.

"If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yean for the vast and endless sea." —Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

For centuries the Church has compared itself to a ship. Congregations with Danish and Norwegian heritage went so far as to hang a model ship above the pews so that the symbol was always before the people. I have seen this several times in my ministry. The image of a ship captures the adventure of going somewhere, of working together on deck and facing powerful storms together.

These days most ships are powered by a petroleum or nuclear energy source, things we control. This is great for predictable sailing schedules but what is lost is the marvelous sense of being blown by the mysterious power of the wind, -of being caught up in something larger than ourselves. I don't think hanging a model of a container ship or an oil tanker would inspire us in the same way as a sailing ship!

The quote above really gets at what we need in the church, "to yearn for the vast and endless sea" -of God. We know in our bones that the church on earth is part of a timeless immense enterprise to unite people to God and to each other in love, but our thoughts can drift away from that. We can be distracted by things that seem important in the moment but miss the joy of being involved in God's immense enterprise.

When Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer he led his followers to God in wonder and to open themselves to God's way and God's purpose ("thy Kingdom", "thy will"). So we, too, are to nd wonder in God and openness to God's ways and purpose. Then, we simply ask for help from God to give us what we need to join the mission ("our daily bread"). So, this simple and profound prayer beings us back to where we need to be - with God. As we "yearn for God" let us pray these petitions:

• May we at Christ Lutheran be swept up in God's vision and God's mission!

• May we see ourselves as wonderfully made and as a gift from God to the world.

• May we always worship in expectation that God is going to speak to us.

• May we be on the lookout for God showing up daily!

• May we love each other and care for those with needs.

• May we tell our stories of God and faith.

• May we sail together as shipmates in the sea of life.

Come join the voyage! Come Holy Spirit!

Rev. Frank Philipp, Interim Bridge Pastor

HaPyFaHe’SDa!

Many of you will have already read this article as it comes from my congregational email from earlier. This is intended to get the message out to those who unfortunately did not receive those communications.

Dear Saints of Christ Lutheran,

First, thank you for the outpouring of support in various media and with various concerns. I really do feel appreciated by you all, and thus I decided to respond to a few concerns that have arisen:

• My family and I are doing quite well. Of course not being the recommended candidate for the Lead Pastor was disappointing. On the other hand I am aware of the dicult process that the Call Com-mittee was assigned.

• I acknowledge the hard work both the Call Com-mittee and Transition Team have done in wrestling with and studying our identity and leadership.

• As is the reality for ALL Lutheran clergy, the sense of call as a pastor is always under discernment. This is especially a reality for me moving forward.

• I am presently serving among you as the called Associate Pastor of Christ Lutheran Church, and that is not changing for the foreseeable future.

Secondly, I publicly thank the Call Committee for their consideration and professionalism in the midst of what is an uncommon situation in our tradition. They were excellent with the tasks placed in their hands and I speak highly about their eorts.

God’s Peace,

Pastor DJ Dent

If you read annual reports from publicly held compa-nies or banks, you will frequently see the word “du-ciary.” Fiduciary is used as an adjective to describe something which is held in trust. It is also used as a noun to describe the one who is a trustee who must account for that which is held in trust. For example, a bank president has a duciary responsibility to stock-holders in the bank and to depositors who place their money in the bank. A company treasurer has a ducia-ry responsibility to the owners of the company. A payroll clerk has a duciary responsibility to pay people what they have earned. You may never have considered yourself a duciary, and you may never have acted ocially in a duciary capacity, but in reality, you are a duciary. All of us are. That applies both to Christians and to those who are not part of God’s family through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. We who are Christians will stand before the Judgment

JUNE STEWARDSHIP+ APPLYING BIBLE PRINCIPLES

Seat of Christ. There, we will not be judged for salva-tion, since the penalty and judgment for sin was settled once and for all on the cross of Calvary when the Lord Jesus paid the price for our sin. Instead, when we stand before Christ, we will give an account of how we have used what God has entrusted to us. Just as a bank president must account to stockholders and depositors on how their funds are used, we must account to Christ for how we have used what God has entrusted to us. Since everything we have rightfully belongs to Him, we will need to report on how we have managed His assets! As you consider how you have used what God has entrusted to your care and keeping during the past few months, what kind of job have you done? And more importantly, as a “duciary” of what God has placed in your hands, will you stand before Him with joy, eager to report on your giving and management of His assets?
