FRED’S STORY Not long after Fred was born, his mum Karen noticed that her baby boy struggled to focus on the world around him. After three months of tests, he was diagnosed with FEVR – a rare and progressive eye condition. Fred’s retinas didn’t form properly, which means he can only see a few metres in front of him with his left eye and light and dark with his right. And as Fred grows, it’s likely that his vision will worsen. But his mum Karen says she’s focused on creating visual memories with Fred before that time comes. “We’re hoping for as many years of sight as possible, but we want to do as much as we can, while we can. He’s been having lots of great experiences, like going to Disney, which he can recall in future and build on. “I always find the staff in the Ophthalmology Unit at GOSH to be so accommodating and kind. They’re lovely. Though, the hardest thing about coming here is the noise. It can be difficult for Fred, who has severe sight loss, to navigate around the unit, especially when there are lots of other kids here with sight loss and hearing loss. And then there are the wheelchairs, canes and chairs too.” With your help the brand-new Sight and Sound Centre will enable Fred and his family to have a much calmer and enjoyable experience when they visit GOSH for Fred’s regular check-ups and appointments.
