Good evening members, friends, and supporters of the Atlanta Business League. Thank you so much for joining us for this historic and memorable evening of celebration. Our theme this year, “Celebrating 85 Years of Achievement,” reflects the League’s commitment to provide economic empowerment and business development opportunities for metro Atlanta’s women and minority communities-- with an emphasis on enterprises owned by African-Americans. Tonight, we highlight and underscore the important role of trailblazing African-American-owned businesses that have invested more than 100 years in our communities, present the Inaugural Maynard H. Jackson Jr. Empowerment Award and take a brief walk down memory lane.
As the South’s oldest and most influential minority business development organization, the Atlanta Business League has much to celebrate tonight, including its rich history of business development, advocacy and the enduring legacy that it builds upon today.
The League has long been a critical ingredient in the growth and development of metropolitan Atlanta. It continues in that vital role today. For some, it represents a rich history of ‘Negro’ business owners whose struggles and success-es paved the way for today’s African-American entrepreneurs. For others, the League serves as an effective training ground and a valuable rung in their personal growth and development. And for many others, it is a supportive and professional venue where relationships are developed and nurtured. In short, the Atlanta Business League is singu-larly unique for each of us; and it remains a vital vehicle and reliable resource for people at various developmental levels and walks of life.
Since its inception, the Atlanta Business League has been and is being piloted by some of Atlanta’s best and bright-est. Men and women alike, have sacrificed time and resources from both their businesses and home life to help grow the organization into the premier African-American business developer and advocate it is today. Tonight, we salute family business owners, community leaders and global icons who are living examples of those pioneers and pacesetters whose investments paid off, then and now, for all of us.
Sincerely,
Milton Jones, Jr.ABL Board Chairman

The National Business League was committed from its incep-tion to a strong, comprehensive program of self-help and self-sufficiency which encourages civic pride and community re-investment.

The Atlanta Business League’s Student Business Shadow Project provides high school juniors and seniors in metro Atlanta with summer internships in businesses owned or managed by African Americans. The program provides the students with hands-on experience in business with the goal of encouraging them to pursue careers in business and entrepreneurship. In addition to working on projects in their ‘shadow businesses,’ the students have weekly field trips and site visits to businesses in a broad range of industries. The students also visit important cultural institutions in Atlanta.

A native of Butler, Alabama, Young has served on the Atlanta City Council since January 2002. The district he represented is comprised of several communities on the westside of Atlanta, including English Avenue, Washington Park and Vine City. An avid Atlanta Falcons fan, he helped oversee the completion of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, also located in District 3.
During his council tenure, Young’s strong leadership and collaborative problem-solving skills resulted in adopting policy with a long-term positive impact on the city. With support from former Mayor Kasim Reed’s administration through the Department of Planning, Young suc-cessfully completed “Westside Revive.” This unprecedented initiative created redevelopment plans for neighborhoods that have not benefited from traditional economic opportunities. Young’s active role in the redevelopment of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive corridor resulted in more than $65 million for the completion of the Historic Westside Village project that served as a catalyst for continued investments.
He also supported funding of police and fire equipment to enhance public safety through-out his district, including infrastructure improvements and cameras. Young lent his legislative support for the creation of the Atlanta Citizens Review Board and abolished the Disorderly Conduct 6 statute that unfairly profiled citizens in underserved neighborhoods, after the shooting death of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston by Atlanta Police.
Young earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Hampton University. He played trumpet on The Marching Force. A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the National Or-ganization of Minority Architects (NOMA), and former Vice-President of the Atlanta Chapter.Young was the son of a retired army sergeant major who served in the United States Army for 30 years. At one point, the family was stationed in Alaska.
“The different places that he served while in the Army afforded me and my family exposure that I don’t think we would’ve ever had. It also gave me a love for all people,” Young has said about his childhood.
Young grew up wanting to be an architect and was in the industry for more than 30 years.“I really love construction. When I was younger, I spent many summers with my uncles do-ing construction projects. That experience really gave me a love for the built environment and being able to shape things from ideas and concepts,” he said.
At the time of his passing, Young was serving on the Atlanta City Council’s City Utilities and Community Development/Human Services committees as well as the Committee on Coun-cil. During his tenure, he served as a member of most of the council committees including serving as chair of the Zoning Committee.
When asked what message he wanted to share with constituents in his absence, Young said, “Atlanta City Council District 3 is alive and well. We have challenges that we have to overcome in the city… (but) we’re excited about the future.”
The Honorable Ivory Lee Young, Jr.
