PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

A FANTASTIC BEGINNING : JANUARY SOCIAL, AWARDS, EISKHANAIt has been a fantastic beginning of

2019 for RMR. We had our yearly January social again at 3R Racing in Denver (www.3rauto.com). Dax Raub, CEO of 3R, has been a longtime supporter of the club and considers RMR a strategic partner of 3R. The January social by 3R has become a cherished pastime of the club.

For those who have not gone to one of our 3R events, it is a “must-attend.” The shop always has spectacular cars on display, both Porsche and “lesser marque” cars, which the owners have entrusted 3R to perform work on. For those who enjoy mechanics, it is a treat to see the state-of-the-art tools and workbays.

At this social, our Chief Driving Instructor Committee gives awards to distinguished drivers in our Driver Education programs. This year ’s recipients were: “Most Improved Male Driver” Bruce Cleveland, “Most Improved Female Driver” (we have two recipients this year) Karen Clayton and Vicki Cox-Jones, and the “Distinguished Driver of the Year” Dave Stribling.

I had the honor of giving out the RMR Enthusiast of the Year award at the social. Each year, the Board selects a person who is an outstanding member of RMR. The recipient is an exemplary participant in RMR’s regional activities and shows initiative in support and organization of ongoing activities and the development of new activities.

This year we had a tie. We had one person stand out in our high performance driving events and another stand out regarding our socials and tours. So, our two award winners for RMR Enthusiast of the Year are Mark Taylor and Scott Henderson.

Mark is an amazing individual – laid back and friendly. He and his wife Carol joined RMR in 2012. He served as Secretary of the Board 2015-2016. Mark became a member of RMR’s “driving board” which manages the RMR tours. He has a 2006 Carrera S in immaculate condition.

For many years, Mark worked for the Department of Transportation and became quite familiar with Colorado roads. He used this expertise to develop some of the finest tours RMR has seen in a very long time. In 2018, Mark was in charge of the two 60th Anniversary Celebration Tours along with the multi-day Grand Loop Tour. This year, Mark continues his leadership and is developing several tours for RMR including a yet-to-be-announced multi-day tour coming this summer. I really count on his expertise skills to advise me as President on matters pertaining to our tours and socials.

Scott Henderson joined RMR in 2004. His collection of cars includes a yellow 2004 GT3. Scott has been quite passionate in improving our high-performance driving programs. He became an instructor, is RMR’s Safety

Chair, and is on the Chief Driving Instructor Committee.

In 2017 he co-founded with Brian Leary RMR’s DE101 program. This program helps novices understand and prepare for attending high performance driving events. This program has been an outstanding success. Since the beginning of DE101, attendance at our driving programs has dramatically improved as well as member satisfaction in the program. I can also count on Scott to give me sound advice regarding our driving programs which has helped me tremendously in my responsibilities as President.

Both Mark and Scott stand out as true enthusiasts of RMR and I am proud in being able to hand out the awards to them at our January social at 3R Racing.

Another successful event in January was Eiskhana. This is the first time in three years that we have been able to hold our ice-driving event. It was a great success. We had 63 drivers attend on a cold but sunny day on Georgetown Lake. This really low-speed event helps drivers learn how to negotiate a car driving on sheer ice. Drivers drove on ice 15 inches thick in a very safe environment. Fun was had by all.

Look forward to the upcoming announcements for events this February and March.

MEMBERS’ CORRALHolly Jackson Membership Chair

♥ ♥ ♥ I ♥ RMR-PCA! ♥ ♥ ♥Every month I go to at least one

event that RMR organizes. Last month, I was out at the 3R Racing social. In our tradition, we gave out some major awards to members that stand out in the club and to DE track drivers. I want to acknowledge our 2018 Enthusiasts of the Year! A big thanks to Scott Henderson, our Safety Chair, for all he does to help our Autocross and DE track days run smooth. A big thanks to Mark Taylor for his role in our 60th Gathering at Vail, the Grand Loop Tour, and our tours we hold from Spring through Fall. And I can’t forget to thank all the volunteers that help out at every event. You are the unsung heroes of RMR! There are so many of you that put in so much time and effort to keep our events up and running. I want to personally thank you. As a volunteer myself, I know it really helps to hear the appreciation of others. I think our club has some outstanding members that are not only self less but also very appreciative. With such

a large club (over 2,900 members), it is hard to please everyone. We do our best to accommodate most needs and listen to member’s suggestions. If you would like to help out or make a suggestion, just contact the Board, the respective Committee Chair, or the Event Chair of a particular event.

Were you one of the many who tried out Eiskhana? Maybe you stopped by just to watch? Did you know that there was a group of non-members that stopped just to watch us have fun? And we also got the attention of the local Sheriff’s Dept …… in a good way! LOL! I wanted to thank Vicki Cox-Jones and Jim Thorburn for being the event chairs! Well done! It was a great day with lots of smiles and a few stuck cars! Of course, many people were there to lend a helping hand to get the cars moving again! Thanks to everyone for helping out with that and keeping the fun going for all. I had fun giving rides in the Macan. It was a great way to visit with friends,

members, and future members! I know someone couldn’t pass up the seat heater either! And thanks Vicki for coaching me to get faster times! I sure hope everyone had fun! I know I did!

Remember to keep an eye out on our calendar on our website rmr.pca.org. We have the monthly social and Breakfast Club happening in February. For March, there will be more to come for our New Member Social! This is a big event, so mark your calendars for March 23rd. (Yes, this is a date change!) We usually expect around 200 to 250 people to show up. Come learn about our club and everything we do! You will see how diverse of a club we are and how I come to call many members friends and some are nearly family!

Cheers!

TRACK TALK

Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

It’s that time of year again – Yes!

Here are some ideas that might help you get ready.

Scheduling EventsLet’s start here. Look at the calendar and mark some

track and autocross days now! Work your schedule around them vs. the other way around!

And don’t forget about the Alpine Region DEs at fun tracks to the south. I like to hit the Pueblo Motorsport Park track at least twice a year – it’s a blast!

Your PorscheThere are so many things that you can do to get your

car ready or enhance it.

Do you need any new tools for your tool box – a tire pressure gauge with a range of at least 25-50 PSI, or a torque wrench (90-110 Lb-Ft)? How about a carjack or jack stands?

Schedule your routine maintenance. This includes oil service, changing the air filter and brake fluid, checking the brake pads, and installing new spark plugs. Is it time to upgrade to a higher temperature-tolerant brake fluid such as Castrol SRF or install brake pads that are more suitable for the track? These are relatively inexpensive upgrades that will make a big difference. My season-beginning maintenance also includes paying for a half hour of labor for a mechanic to go around the car to tighten bolts.

For those of you with a manual transmission, are your pedals set up for easier heel-toe downshifting? Adding an inexpensive adjustable accelerator pedal cover makes a HUGE difference. Let me know if you need advice – where to buy one and how to perform this DIY project.

Does your Porsche need an alignment and corner balance?

Get these items out of the way and if there’s money left over you should consider purchasing a data acquisition system such as an AiM Solo for $399.

It might also be time to buy a new SNELL 2015-rated helmet, and if you have a 4, 5, or 6-point harness, a HANS-type device will now be required by PCA for both drivers and passengers.

Getting Yourself ReadyAre you honing your skills while driving around town?

Are your hands “soft” and constantly at “9 and 3?” Is your vision high, long, and around the corner? How’s your awareness – are you checking your mirrors looking for cars around you, observing the road surface, constantly observing your gauges, etc.? Are you visualizing the line and corner apexes just for fun – is it an early, middle, or late apex? Are you practicing your heel-toe down shifting?

What are you doing to learn? Are you studying your driving notes, YouTube or your video, personal data, reading a performance driving book, or browsing the web? Do you have conversations with your track mates about performance driving? Do you have a mentor?

Have you set any goals for the year?

SUMMARYWriting this summary is easy. Don’t wait, plan now,

“pull the trigger” on a few items, and you’ll start being as pumped up as I am after authoring this column! 2019 is going to be another great year of “Raising the Bar!”

Most know him as an awesome person, family man, driv-er, and CDI, but did you know that early on Dave had quite a successful racing career? From 2003 to 2007, he raced across the country with PCA and SCCA.

Get this – he finished first in his class in 53% of his races and was on the podium 73% of the time!

One racing story. At Watkins Glen, Dave qualified for the race pole position by beating out all 30 cars that were in the faster class! This is no small achievement as this is Watkins Glen, where many of the best drivers participate in the na-tional race! He said the race was a complete adrenaline rush with them creeping up on him on the straight-away with their additional 20 horsepower. With competitors on both sides of his car edging their front bumpers slightly ahead while going 140 mph into the “Bus Stop,” he told himself, “I am faster than them, I just have to wait until they brake. I can hold the turn as long as they are behind me when we come out of it…I can hold them off.” How exciting!

DRIVER AWARD WINNERS

16 HighGear | Celebrating 61 Years | 1958 - 2019

Dave is the perfect Anita Moyle Memorial Distinguished Driver Award recipient.

Most Improved Female Drivers – Karen Clayton and Vicki Cox-JonesThat’s right – we have two award winners this year!Let’s start with Karen. She’s a Copper Mountain ski in-

structor who discovered firsthand that Porsche performance driving can be a very “slippery slope.” She took this very seriously; her 2018 looked like this:

• Started in the Novice Green run group• Seven DE days at HPR• Three HPR open lapping days• An Autocross• Had the opportunity to learn from four different in-

structors in addition to two the year before• Did a ton of studying - online YouTube and review-

ing Harry’s Lap-timer• Transitioned from a VW Golf R to a 2015 Cayman S• All of this led to her amazing best lap time of 2:04!

She states that ride-alongs with instructors were very helpful, and that the Cup Car charity ride at the October German Cars & German Dogs was amazing.

Karen endorses Ladies’ Day as a great way to enter the world of tracking – ladies take note!

Along the way Karen developed close friendships while being mentored by quick GT4 drivers Jeff and Stacy Robins.

One last thing – getting back to her ski instructing, Kar-en’s “passion” on her name tag this year is “Smooth is Fast.” How sweet is that!

Then there’s Vicki or “C-J” as we affectionately call her.First of all, Vicki is a tireless key member of our per-

formance driving program team. Near the end of the first quarter of 2018 she assumed the Second Vice President role on the RMR Board which oversees the club’s Performance Driving Program. She Instructed at the Autocross school in April and drove and instructed at all the autocrosses. Be-sides autocrossing, she instructed and drove at all but one of the four HPR DEs plus instructing at Ladies’ Day and the Novice DE. On top of all of this, she was the Club Race Registrar and drove during the Club Race Advanced Solo DE.

Comments from the CDIs about her driving progress say it all:

• “I totally support having Vicki Cox-Jones being awarded the Most Improved Female Driver award. It is rare that we have a woman move into the Black run group and it truly is a big accomplishment as that group has always included only the top RMR drivers. We re-ally need to celebrate this! I saw her running in Black in October and she was flying!”

• “C-J really impressed me when I was on the track with her - noticeable improvement from early to late season and her times confirmed the progress. She’s a

fine choice! Also, she’s certainly a viable candidate for Enthusiast of the Year!”

Most Improved Male Driver – Bruce ClevelandBruce is a quick study and completely gets it. He’s an in-

ternational Delta pilot and most, if not all, of the things he’s learned as a pilot translate to performance driving.

2018 was his first full year running PCA events after par-ticipating in two DEs in the fall of 2017 – at Pueblo Mo-torsport Park and High Plains Raceway. He also was a first-time participant at the April Autocross School and Au-tocross. There he achieved the tenth fastest time, which was also the quickest non-modified Porsche time posted.

Bruce was signed-off to solo at the May DE at HPR and was posting lap times around 2:15. He then participated in the June, July, September, and October HPR DEs.

Bruce had the opportunity to ride with instructor and rac-er extraordinaire Bruce McPherson at the July DE which he said was incredibly eye-opening; this helped accelerate his transition to the Orange/Brown run groups after that event.

Success and improvement continued as he achieved new personal best times at each successive DE culminating with a 2:03 lap time at the last DE…on street tires!

Here are some other “fun facts” about Bruce: he wants to become an instructor someday, he volunteered to help with paddock tech inspection at the busy June DE, and he shares the car with his lovely wife Cynthia, who was an enthusias-tic DE rookie last year.

SummaryDave, Karen, Vicki, and Bruce - congratulations to each

of you on receiving these well-deserved and hard-earned awards.

WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

PAST EVENT : EISKHANA

18 HighGear | Celebrating 61 Years | 1958 - 2019

Sometimes the weather in Col-orado can really work in your fa-vor. Sunday, January 20th was truly one of those days where you couldn’t have asked for better weather. Yeah, it was a bit windy, but you can always expect that on Georgetown Lake. However, the sun was shining brightly, and the sky was that perfect shade of blue which complements the exquisite-ly beautiful cars. Okay, so some of the pointer cones were blown off the course, and the snow was blowing around a bit, and it was a bit chilly, but it was a perfectly beautiful day to spend with around 60 other like-minded friends.

Following a brief drivers’ meet-ing, the drivers were divided into two groups and sent to run in one of two short autocross-style cours-es. After a couple of runs on one course, the drivers moved to the other course. One course incor-porated a continuous radius corner with a couple of tight gates. The other course had a long slalom with a tight U-turn followed by a shorter slalom. Both courses of-fered a combination of slippery and not so slippery conditions. The ice was very slippery while the snow, if you didn’t get high centered (you know who you are), afforded some traction to help keep the car going in the right direction – at least in the morning. As the day progressed, the snow started to get soft and failed to give traction, so driving styles had to change somewhat. Of course, several cars had to be rescued from the deeper snow.

Many were pushed out by several willing volunteers. However, our true heroes were Gabriel Schwartz with his well-prepped Audi and John Dollison with his tow strap. Gabe was always willing to run to the rescue of those with tow hooks and give them a little help to get out of a slippery situation. At one point, the local constabulary showed up and, at the invitation of Holly Jack-son, took a turn on the ice in his big law enforcement pickup. If you thought he drove better than you, don’t feel bad, he is the driving in-structor for the Clear Creek Coun-ty Sheriff and they practice on the lake all the time.

Kathy Fricke was kind enough to lend her expertise to time one of the courses. This allowed those competitive drivers in the group to compete for bragging rights. Help-ing Kathy with the timing was Walt Fricke and Harry Jones. Amaz-ingly, one of our starters, Panav Hulsurkar, drove all the way from Laramie, WY just to volunteer for the day. I look forward to seeing Panav at our autocross events this

summer. Our other starter, Jan Pidhayny, is a familiar face around the RMR Autocross and DE scene. Jan braved standing in the cold to make sure everybody was safe on the slalom course. Thank you to everybody for coming and hav-ing a blast on the ice, and a spe-cial thanks to all the people that helped this event come together. Of course, I must thank our regis-trars. Nancy Warren set up our on-line registration and willingly made changes when I asked her to. Har-ry Jones was a trooper for standing around in the cold checking every-body in during onsite registration. Thanks also to Mike Pappas for the wonderful pictures.

What made co-chairing this event with Jim Thorburn all worth-while was seeing all the smiles and hearing all the laughter. Thank you all for coming out and having fun! I am already looking forward to next year on Georgetown Lake!

Track PersonalitiesBrian Bobich: The Making of an RMR Instructor

By: Lynda Love

If you’ve visited High Plains Raceway in the past few years, you may have seen Brian Bobich’s beautiful blue 2015 Porsche GT3 in the paddock or rapidly approaching in your rearview mirror on the track. Brian attended his first RMR Driver Education (DE) event in the fall of 2015 and has since become a mainstay at RMR DEs.

Brian did his f irst track day in 2014 when his local dealer convinced him it would be a great idea to see what his new Porsche (a Macan) could “really do.” Brian said, “I got out of the car and thought, ‘I can’t possibly be THAT bad at something! I need to try that again!’” He was hooked!

The Roots Take Hold Each year since then, a theme

has emerged – Brian’s way of describing his progression on the track for that year. In 2015, he moved back to Colorado and was able to fit in a few DE days, getting a taste of what RMR has to offer.

Depth of Knowledge In 2016, Brian participated in each

DE weekend at HPR and achieved his goal of becoming soloed for the Club Race DE in September. He also modified his GT3 by adding race seats, a harness, and a roll cage.

Let’s Expand HorizonsIn 2017, Brian drove the tracks

in Pueblo and La Junta, happily learning the nuances of those tracks. He also attended several profess ional dr iv ing schools that put him in new cars, on new tracks, and in some cases, very different conditions. His favorite was the rally school he attended in Washington, as it put him the farthest out of his driving comfort zone. “I wanted to build my tool set,” he said. “The rally school was great for cross-training. It made me focus on vision and patience, as well as getting more comfortable with a car sliding underneath me at the limits of traction.”

A Year of ServiceIn 2018, Brian was busy! He

helped with RMR socials, co-chaired a DE at HPR, chaired an autocross (he designed his first autocross course, earning mostly positive reviews from participants), and used his love of driving to raise money for multiple charities via demonstration rides in his GT3.

But the most fulfilling was having the opportunity to complete the PCA National Instructor Training Program and join RMR’s High Performance Driving Instructor corps. After becoming an instructor, Brian instructed 16 students at eight separate DE events at four of Colorado’s racetracks. About his first year instructing, Brian commented, “In some ways it was exactly what I was expecting. But instructing also went beyond

my wildest expectations---the amount of focus and concentration (a long with the necessi ty of communicat ing c lea r l y in a relatively high stress environment) is both extremely challenging and highly rewarding at the same time.”

W h e n a s ke d a b o u t o t h e r takeaways from his first year as an instructor, Brian said, “I initially had reservations about whether I was truly capable of handling the tremendous responsibility it takes to be an instructor. But I’m so glad I took the leap and went for it. The thoroughness of the training program, the expectations of p rofess iona l i sm, and the rigorous vetting process all felt on par with what I experienced from the professional instructors I encountered at the professional driving schools I’ve attended. I also feel instructing is a great way to thank all of the tremendous instructors I’ve had in RMR. I’m taking their lessons and wisdom and paying it forward to others.”

And what about Brian’s theme for 2019? He said, “One thing I know for sure: there’s a lot of great race tracks I haven’t been to yet. And I’d love to share some of our RMR enthusiasm with other PCA regions. So perhaps this year’s theme will be something like, ‘Have Porsche (and trailer), will travel!’” Then Brian added, “As long as I don’t miss any of RMR’s HPR events!”

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

Quick question. Do you insure your Porsche with Hagerty?

I do. And I really do consider it a pretty good deal, considering what they charge for the mileage I put on my 911SC every year. Plus, you get a magazine that they put out, every two months. And it’s not bad, either. It’s called, wait for the drum roll, “Hagerty.” Their tag line is “For people who love cars.” And it’s edited by Larry Webster, who was last seen as editor of Road & Track.

In the latest issue, is a story called “The 2019 Bull Market List,” wherein Hagerty’s “valuation experts present our second annual summit of vehicles on the move.” They list ten that are either poised to fatten someone’s cyber net worth or are already beginning to inch up.

In the article, they make a big point about how, contrary to popular wisdom, modern mass-produced cars are now collectable. Case in point: A 1997 Acura Integra Type R, with 1191 miles showing, was hammered last September at $63,800.

Their premise is that, if you’re a baby boomer like me, you sat in study hall in high school dreaming about 911s and Shelby GT 350s. You were slack-jawed over the quoted stats for a 427 Cobra or a 427 Vette, when new.

That’s fine. But the fact is that children of us boomers are now pushing 40. I know, my older daughter is now 36. And those who are doing well, who find themselves with some disposable income, now covet … a VTEC with an 8000-rpm redline. To us, it’s a glorified Honda Civic. To them, well, the next generation always has a way of messing with the minds of their parents.

Some of the cars they list are a bit too recent for me to be comfortable. A 1996 Corvette Grand Sport, for example. Weren’t they made, like, yesterday? Same for a 2004 Subaru WRX STI. Although they make an interesting case for the Subie.

It’s the one with the giant hood scoop. Bright blue with gold BBS wheels. And a coat hanger spoiler. Now, here’s where it gets interesting. 300 HP of boost and 300 Lb-Ft of torque. Curb weight of 3,300 lbs. They point out that the 2019 version packs

virtually the same go-power and weighs 200 pounds more. Yeah, I know.

They also list a 1994 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon. With wood cladding and a rear-facing third seat. You want BIG? Forget Suburbans and Silverados. This thing will take a 4x8 plywood sheet through a tailgate that gives you the choice of opening down or to the side. And it can tow up to 7,000 pounds.

It’s the last of the road-hugging vista cruisers of old. Or so it may seem, except for the fact that, at least among the very well-heeled, wagons seem to actually be making a comeback. A story ran on Bloomberg recently about how, last year, some 212,000 wagons were sold in the US. Ok, ok, that’s a sliver of the total US sales. But it’s up 29% from five years ago.

“The winner in the death of the car is the station wagon,” says Karl Brauer, executive publisher of Autotrader. “You’ve got the car on one end of the spectrum and the SUV on the other; the wagon sits right in between these two.”

Who’s the buyer? Often, it’s the well-off iconoclast who wants to stand out from the neighbors. Witness the Porsche Panamera Sport Tourismo. Is it a hatchback? A wagon? Is there a difference? The fact is that Porsche is, at least in part, responding to competitive models from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. It IS a Porsche, and it IS NOT an SUV.

But I digress. Another fascinating model on the list is the 2008-9 Pontiac G8 GXP. Remember? One of Bob Lutz’s last gasps for Pontiac, and the closest thing to a four-door Corvette that GM ever made. With the 6.2 Liter LS3 V8, rated at 415 HP. And a six-speed manual. They only made 1829. Worth considering? You bet.

Ok, now, I’m saving the best for last. Let’s hear it for … the original 1997-2004 Porsche Boxster! This one I can really identify with. I owned one, a 2001 Boxster S. Silver.

They say a mid-engine Porsche for Corolla money; few cars ever made are as delightful; lots were built, so there are plenty to choose from. On the downside,

it suffers from the dreaded IMS bearing disease; they are cheap, but parts and service are not; you can’t see the engine.

I say in its day, it was an immediate cult car. I added the Porsche sport exhaust, always in loud mode, the short shift kit, and a K & N air filter. Doing the filter swap was interesting, like peeling an onion as you worked your way through the layers of cladding before you really did get to see the engine.

My negatives? I really did hate the plastic rear window. It was virtually impossible to keep clean and scratch-free. And the rear tires lasted, what, 12,000 mi?

Ok, I don’t think the rear tires on newer models last any longer. It’s a cost of ownership. But, boy, was it fun. One year we did the Blue Ridge Boxster Summit. We were living in the Northeast. As we traveled south, we rendezvoused with fellow Boxster buddies at various spots along the way, until we all got on the Blue Ridge Parkway and, well, use your imagination. By the time we got to Blowing Rock, NC, we were at least 200+ strong. From virtually every state east of the Mississippi.

I remember asking the front desk for the best route to a nearby mountaintop. The guy behind the counter told us the roads to take, but he exhorted us to think twice about it because “there are a lot of tricky curves.” We laughed and laughed … and had a blast on that route.

Aah! I’ve thought about swapping my SC for a Boxster. I know people in the club that have done it. I know I’d enjoy the HVAC. The big step up in power. The folding roof. The two trunks. And, what’s more, I could use the net profit on my car to take a nice vacation, make the down payment on a second home, invest in … what, another car on the list?

No. I’ve been there. My memories are still fresh. I’ll leave it to next-gen enthusiasts, who haven’t yet experienced Boxster mania. The joys of enjoying an appreciating asset that you can appreciate. Drive on, dude.

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

As I rushed out the door for a New Zealand vacation right after the first of the year, I knew that I would need to compose this monthly letter during, or immediately upon my return from the trip. So I figured that I’d do a little feature story of Porsches on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. I envisioned lots of lens-loving poses of locals with their cars and a backstory. I even had a title in mind-“Cars and Kiwis.” As usual, the story took an unexpected turn. After covering may-be 1500 miles of roads over 14 days, I learned that seeing a Porsche in the wild in New Zealand appears to be about as rare as sighting a Kiwi Bird or maybe even a Hobbit. Sure, there were a few newer 911s around the financial district parking lots in Auckland (as well as one 912!), and several Cayenne and Macan (1) sightings in the smaller AWD oriented cities. I even tried to give credit to a Toyota “Ionic” because it was part of a fleet and had a “991” decal on the back window. And even the single Macan that I saw, had a li-cense plate that read “JAG.” For a mo-ment, I thought the owner might have been seeking comfort in an homage to New Zealand’s Mother England- de-

spite driving a German car. But with the exception of one Cayman GTS hav-ing lots of fun - and I mean LOTS OF FUN - with a fellow Audi R8 driver on a true “Porsche Road,” that was the only Porsche FUN that I saw. (Funny side note: The place they were having this little mountain run was in Lyttle-ton - the ONLY town that I recall vis-iting that had the same name as a town in this PCA zone. Might make a good sister town to Littleton, Colorado.)

I was hoping that the wonderful roads leading down to Milford Sound might also carry a double meaning accompanied by some music from a Porsche sport exhaust. No such luck. And when I did manage to corral the owner of a Cayenne GTS in Christ-church, I asked him “Where are all the Porsches?” He told me that there were lots of them in New Zealand. I bit my tongue, choosing not to ask if they were nocturnal animals, just like the rare Kiwi Bird. He then told me that he personally owned several. I asked if there was an issue with parts being so remotely located. He said, “No prob-lem at all, I get all my parts from Pel-ican or Suncoast Parts.” That’s right

- not Auckland, not Wellington - but Florida and California. Again, I bit my tongue to avoid commenting that both suppliers are on water in places where, just like NZ, there seem to be more boats than cars. New Zealanders are proud of the fact that there are more boats per capita than any other coun-try in the world. Roughly one in three families owns a boat. And to a large degree they are sailboats. Perhaps sail-boats represent the competition for the dollars that would normally put the Porsche in the garage. Porsche has a history with tractors, cars, bicycles, and even Porsche Design Power Boats. Maybe New Zealand would do well with Porsche sailboats.

Speaking of being along the water, please pay close attention to announce-ments from PCA.org, as hotel regis-tration for the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton, Florida will be opening around the time that you are reading this issue. Hope to see you there or in your region during 2019.

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
