PLANNED GIVING AT SHANAHAN

Preparing Through Prayer

“Degs” Continues to GiveIn November of 2014, the Lord called his

faithful servant Bob “Degs” J. Degnan to

join Him in Heaven. At Shanahan, we knew

Bob as teacher, friend, colleague, and coach.

After walking the hallways for over 25 years,

Bob is certainly part of Shanahan’s legacy. In

addition to the academic lessons he taught, he

also taught the value of faith, heritage, kind-

ness, and laughter. All those who knew him

were blessed! His spirit will always be remem-

bered here at Shanahan through the students

who benefit from his goodness in his memory.

Bob Degnan graciously remembered

Bishop Shanahan in his estate plan, and as a result, students at Bishop Shanahan receive

tuition assistance and the benefits of a Catholic education thanks to his faithfulness and

generosity. (See article on page 20.)

SPIRITUALITY AT SHANAHAN

In August before every school year, the new Student Council Executive Board and Class Officers (EBCO) prepare for the upcoming year by

taking part in a leadership camp run by moderator and BSHS teacher, Joseph Aquilante. The camp involves prayer, team building skills,

workshops with leaders from the Office of Catholic Education, meetings with former EBCO members (now alumni), and fun activities like

go-cart races, scavenger hunts, a run up the Art Museum steps, and a pizza party. Pictured above, the new EBCO leadership pray at the shrine

of St. John Neumann.

December 2017

Dear Fellow Graduates, Parents, and Friends of Bishop Shanahan,

May the Lord’s peace be with you all! I hope you are enjoying these beautiful

days. All is well here at Bishop Shanahan.

This is a very special year for our school community. It is our DIAMOND

ANNIVERSARY! We have had a wonderful beginning of the school year as we

celebrate SIXTY YEARS OF CATHOLIC EDUCATION IN CHESTER COUNTY.

We began this school year with a very meaningful ceremony on September 11 and

we raised our new flags - US, Papal and School - for the first time at BSHS. Bishop

Michael J. Fitzgerald celebrated our opening liturgy on September 15. Homecoming

Week, “A DIAMOND CELEBRATION,” was a great success. The students enjoyed

the Pep Rally, the Football Game (big win!!!) and their Homecoming Dance - over

950 attended. All year long, we will celebrate our Diamond Anniversary with joy-

filled hearts and gratitude to God. Thank you for being part of these 60 blessed

years. I am sure that the 11,763 alumni of BSHS have done much good in our world

as they “Seek The Things That Are Found Above.”

It is hard to believe we are already coming to the end of the first quarter and

our students are well into their studies. As you know, along with spiritual growth

and the cultivation of a spirit of service, academics are a priority here at BSHS.

Strong academic programs are a hallmark of our school. We have also had a very

exciting season with our fall sports teams. Our “Friday Night Lights” games fill the

stadium. It is a sight to behold and quite an experience - the Shanahan spirit at its

best! Thanks to our Fine Arts department, we enjoyed energetic singing and danc-

ing as our students presented “Footloose” in mid-November. Our students are also

engaged in many service projects, always striving to grow as “People of God; People

for Others.” Shanahan truly is a blessed, busy place filled with happy teenagers!

There is something for everyone here!

Thank you for sharing the good news of Bishop Shanahan with others. Shanahan

is a wonderful place for young people to spend the very important years between

14 and 18. It’s important for them to be surrounded by good people who share the

same values and are true, positive influences during these very formative years.

Thanks for being ambassadors of BSHS. We encourage parents to come and see

what Shanahan has to offer and to “Catch the Shanahan Spirit.” Tours and Shadow

Days are available, and our Spring Open House will be on March 21, 2018. All are

welcome!

Thank you for your support of Bishop Shanahan High School. May God bless

your generosity! May this DIAMOND ANNIVERSARY bring special blessings to all

the members of the Shanahan community. Go Eagles!

God bless you!

Gratefully yours,

Sister Regina Plunkett IHM ’64

I t has been a remarkable start to the 2017

– 2018 school year at Bishop Shanahan

High School as we celebrate 60 Years of

Catholic Education in Chester County.

Students, parents, alumni, parents of alumni,

and friends of our community have all joined

together to make this a memorable year.

Between beautifying our campus, honoring

our country with new flags, remembering Sr.

Helen Rapine with a new garden, having our

opening mass with Bishop Fitzgerald, and

commemorating Nick Mullin’s (’08) legacy,

it has been a joyful start to this special year.

BEAUTIFICATIONEven before our students returned to

campus after summer break, the administra-

tion of Bishop Shanahan High School was

working hard to commemorate the 60th

Anniversary by organizing several beautifica-

tion projects around campus. At the main

entrance off of Woodbine Road, a striking,

three dimensional sign stands mounted on a

brick and metal foundation. New banners of

green and white swing from the campus light

poles, welcoming visitors as they approach

the building. As guests enter the front doors,

they are also greeted by a large, inviting ban-

ner that celebrates the 60th anniversary and

the home of the Eagles!

FLAG RAISING CEREMONYWhile the outdoor and indoor signs bring

new joy to the campus, Bishop Shanahan

High School held a formal and solemn dedi-

cation of its newly constructed set of flag

poles on Monday, September 11th. The

dedication commemorated the anniversary

of 9/11 and opened the 60th anniversary year

with students, faculty and staff.

During the ceremony, President Sister

Regina Plunkett ’64 stated that, “The goal

of Catholic Education is to prepare us to

be good citizens of this world and the next,

no matter what our age. These flags are a

very important reminder of this reality.” A

blessing of the flags and flag poles by School

Minister Fr. John Donia followed the open-

ing remarks.

The flag of the United States was raised

first to the patriotic sound of our National

Anthem being sung by the entire student

body. The Papal flag was raised next and the

school community joined together in prayer.

Finally, the Bishop Shanahan High School

flag was raised and everyone present joined

in singing the Alma Mater.

Principal Michael McArdle additionally

welcomed seven students, who are also Eagle

Scouts, to further honor each flag. These

Eagle Scouts included John Buck ’18, Kolbe

Bien ’18, Matthew Callan ’18, Josh Carney

’18, Daniel Guerin ’18, Robert Hagenow ’18,

and Nicholas Waldschmidt ’18. Matthew

Callan shared, “The flag of the United States

of America represents who we are. It stands

for the freedom we all share and the pride

and patriotism we feel for our county. We

cherish its legacy, as a beacon of hope to

one and all.” In respect for the solemnness

and significance of September 11th, the flags

were then lowered to half-staff. Eagle Scouts at the Flag Raising Ceremony

During the Flag Raising Ceremony, fac-

ulty, staff and students also remembered

the first president of Bishop Shanahan High

School, Sister Helen Rapine, IHM. A beauti-

ful memorial garden now stands at the main

entrance of the school, and was blessed by

Father Donia. A brick, marble and bronze

plaque stands proudly in its center. The

engraving emphasizes that “Virtue flourishes

in an environment of beauty.” The dedica-

tion in memory of Sr. Helen served as the

perfect closing to the ceremony.

OPENING MASS WITH NICK MULLIN DEDICATION

Later that week, the school celebrat-

ed Opening Mass with the Most Reverend

Michael J. Fitzgerald, and Father Mark

Cavara ’05. The mass officially marked the

beginning of the new school year, as well

as the beginning of the 60th anniversary

year of BSHS. The administration, faculty,

staff, guests, and entire student body were

in attendance.

Shanahan community enjoyed a new state-

of-the-art audio system beginning at this

Mass. This asset was made possible through

the support of many from Nick Smiles and

BSHS, but most especially by Tom and Dee

Mullin, parents of Nick Mullin ’08. During

his junior year at Shanahan, Nick was diag-

nosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer.

Despite living with cancer for several years,

he had an extremely positive attitude. Marge

Campbell, the BSHS Choir Director, shared

a few words about Nick: “I truly believe that

God sends His guardian angels to show us

how to live. Nick was an angel loaned to us

to do just that. He taught me so much and

wanted so much to leave to others the way

to live and accept God’s will. He said to me

during a visit ‘I want to be remembered and

celebrated.’ Tom and Dee have done just

that - celebrate Angel Nick - through their

continued goodness. We are all blessed to be

able to call them friends and share in their

unselfish doing and giving.”

Over the years Tom and Dee Mullin have

also generously raised funds to purchase

marching band uniforms, instruments for

the concert and marching bands, a new

piano for the choir room, refurbishing ser-

vices for an older piano, and new micro-

phones.

Nick Mullin’s life has undoubtedly

inspired many in the Shanahan and Chester

County communities, and he continues

to be a beloved alumnus. Band Director

Mr. Chuck Keating shared, “Nick’s legacy

will be forever remembered here at Bishop

Shanahan. His approach to life was truly

inspiring. Everything Tom and Dee Mullin

have done in Nick’s honor will help me to

teach the true meaning of life to my stu-

dents. Nick lived each day to the fullest and

made sure that a smile was part of his day

and the people he was with.” Nick’s portrait

can be found somewhere on stage during

every fall musical performance. Our students

continue to remember him, and we lovingly

cover the Nick Mullin piano in the choir

room after every rehearsal. Nick’s life and

legacy were further remembered at this mass

through the dedication of a special bronze

plaque in the auditorium that was blessed by

Bishop Fitzgerald.

A RICH HISTORY, AN EXCITING PRESENT, AND A BRIGHT FUTURE!

The Shanahan community commemo-

rates its past, celebrates its present, and

looks forward to the years ahead as we con-

tinue to mark 60 years of Catholic Education

in Chester County. At Homecoming, the

Alumni Tent was brought back, allowing

alumni to catch up before the game. In the

Spring, alumni and their families will be

invited to the school for a Mass and refresh-

ments. Save the date for April 15, 2018 in

which we will celebrate alumni memories, as

well as the memories of our beloved alumni

who have been called to heaven. May God

continue to bless all in our Shanahan com-

munity for another 60 years and more!

Christ’s Love Abounds in the Class of 2017

The Class of 2017 Valedictorian Anthony Fonash and Salutatorian Kristin Loughlin are pictured with The Most Reverend Bishop Michael J. Fitzgerald on Graduation Day.

A s Shanahan’s Class of 2017 approached graduation, they

reflected on the defining traits of their class. They considered

what qualities made their class notable and what their legacy to

future students of BSHS would be. At their graduation ceremony,

Salutatorian Kristin Loughlin and Valedictorian Anthony Fonash

said it best when it came to defining the Class of 2017.

In many ways, the part of Shanahan that we

should never forget is best summarized by the

phrase that adorns this very podium: ‘People of God;

People for Others.’ ….In this six-word phrase is a call

to action, a call to live a life for a Higher Power and a

call to change the lives of others. It must now become

the foundation of our life’s journey. …. not only can

you be a Person of God and Person for Others, but that

in many ways, all of you already have been. You have

all in some way encouraged me to be the best version

of myself, while also teaching me the importance of my

faith. In many ways you have become like a family to

me, and now I want to ask that you go out

into the world and extend our family to all.

– VALEDICTORIAN ANTHONY FONASH

…as we stand together facing the future, I ask one final question: going forward, how do we measure our

lives? We have learned at Bishop Shanahan that life is measured not in minutes, days or years, but in the

lives we have touched with our love. We measure in the difference we make and the light we shed upon the world.

In college, in our future careers, in the places we’ve yet to go in our lives, we are called to use our gifts, to

use what we have learned during our high school experience and to change the world with our love.

– SALUTATORIAN KRISTIN LOUGHLIN

Each year at Shanahan we honor the Blessed Mother at our May Liturgy through special Marian hymns and a May Crowning. This year we also shared our gratitude for the nine Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) who work at Shanahan as faculty, staff and administration, as well as Sr. Maureen McDermott. Celebrating jubilee years this year were Sr. Regina Bernarda and Sr. Regina Plunkett. All together, these 10 sisters pictured have devotedly served 472 years in the conse-crated life! We are so blessed at Shanahan to have the IHM sisters serving our community. Pictured (l to r): Sr. Michael Raymond (48 yrs), Sr. Regina Bernarda (60 yrs), Sr. Maureen Peter (57 yrs), Sr. Anne Elise (47 yrs), Sr. Dorothy (56 yrs), Sr. Regina Plunkett (50 yrs), Sr. Janet (39 yrs), Sr. Kathleen (44 yrs), Sr. Jane Michael ( 36 yrs), and Sr. Maureen Lawrence – Superintendent of Secondary Schools (35 yrs).

When I signed up for Mrs. Campbell’s trip to

Italy with CCVA, I was told that this would

be the trip of a lifetime. Little did I know, until I sat at

the first concert in Ognissanti Church in Florence, that

it would be a spiritually moving experience that would

draw me closer to God. Singing in front of me was a

choir of angels. I literally felt my heart move

and I started to cry; I was so deeply touched.

NANCY POTTS, ’70

This past June 2017, I had the amazing privi-

lege to travel to Italy with Mrs. Campbell

in honor of the 25th Anniversary of the founding of

CCVA. This trip changed my life and the students at

Bishop Shanahan with whom I traveled gave me a new-

found rekindling of faith and a joy that will live on in

my heart forever. Despite the fact that our 25 member

group had many young voices with developed talent,

we brought men and women of all ages and faiths and

Chester County Voices Abroad is an international performance ensemble featuring young adults from ages 16 to 21 from the greater

Philadelphia area that travel each year through Europe as musical goodwill ambassadors. This year they celebrated their 25th anniver-

sary. Over the summer, Mrs. Marge Campbell led the group of 16 Shanahan students, five Shanahan alumni, one Shanahan parent, and one

Shanahan faculty member through an unforgettable tour of Italy. The following are some reflections of those who were on the tour.

walks of life to tears by the gift of music and the Gospel

that we spread around Rome, Florence,

Venice, Assisi, Loreto, and Sorrento.

MARIA SCARFO ’92

Throughout my experiences with Chester

County Voices Abroad, I was taught many life

lessons, and one that remains so profound is ‘Touch a

Life,’ the motto by which we have lived.

After being fortunate enough to travel to Spain and

Portugal in 2016, and Italy in 2017, I can honestly say

that my life has been touched. Having experienced

sights such as Fatima in Portugal, and Loreto in Italy,

my faith has been deepened and strengthened, and my

desire to continue to perform and travel has increased.

We did God’s work through song, prayer, travel, and so

much more. It was a beautiful sight for someone my age

to see so many people, younger and older, ded-

icated to performance, but most of all, to God.

Anna Ebersole ’19 and Joseph Grabis ’19 partnered in their Science Fair Project

and won honorable mention in the 2017 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Program.

This placed them in the top 10% of students nationwide who submitted projects. In

their project, they presented technological changes they envisioned in bulletproof

armor over the next 20 years. Their chemistry teacher was Mrs. Andrea Gosselin.

L ast spring, Shanahan Business students took part in their

own “shark tank” experience called the Shanahan Tank Challenge. Chris Beringer and Brad Williams, president and vice-president of The Beringer Group, an independent advisory group, served as the “sharks” along with BSHS Assistant Principal and former Business Department Chair Mr. Robert Seefeldt. Student groups had to develop ideas, write business plans and present the plans to the sharks who asked questions and offered advice. The winning group’s idea was “Breathe Easy Boxes,” a subscription service providing relaxation items. In 2002, the BSHS Administration

initiated the conferring of the

Shanahan Medal at graduation.

This medal is awarded to a person

whose commitment, dedication and

contribution to Catholic Education

deserves the recognition and grati-

tude of the entire Bishop Shanahan

community. The three words

engraved on the medal are: Service,

Commitment and Dedication. At

the 2017 Graduation, we were very

happy to honor with our Shanahan

Medal a graduate from the Class of

1974; a truly generous, spirit-filled

and dedicated person, who has lived

a life of service sharing the spirit of Bishop Shanahan High School

in Chester County and beyond—Dr. Eileen Helm Weaver.

Since 1988, Dr. Weaver has been involved in the administra-

tion of the Non-Public School Services Program of the Chester

County Intermediate Unit. Over the past 29 years, she has worked

with the principals and presidents supervising the Intermediate

Unit specialists who have served our students at Bishop Shanahan.

In consultation with the principals, various combinations of

speech therapists, guidance counselors, and reading and math

specialists have been assigned to support the non-public schools.

Dr. Weaver has also been able to coordinate and provide staff

individual teachers and facul-

ties, forming a strong partner-

ship between the non-public

schools and the Chester County

Intermediate Unit.

Dr. Weaver serves as a

current member of the Board

of Limited Jurisdiction of

Pope John Paull II Regional

Elementary School. She also

shares her expertise and dedi-

cation to Catholic Education

by serving on the Strategic

Planning sub-committee of

the Foundation for Catholic

Education. Her community outreach includes four years on the

Board of Catholic Social Services and a very active participation

in the music ministries of St. Cecilia, Our Lady of the Rosary, and

St. Joseph/Coatesville Parishes.

Faith filled, passionate, other-centered, energetic, humble,

trustworthy, and straightforward are some of the characteristics

of Dr. Weaver. We were blessed and very happy to have bestowed

upon her the Shanahan Medal. Eileen has always followed our

motto, “Seek The Things That Are Found Above,” and Bishop

Shanahan is proud to call her an alumna!

as many as three generations in some

families. He even attended Bishop

Shanahan High School himself. As a

student, he served as the Marching

F r. Brian Connolly ’94, who was ordained

to the priesthood by Archbishop Charles

Chaput on Saturday, May 20, 2017, could be

considered a late vocation. He disagrees.

“It wasn’t necessarily a late calling as

much as a late responding to the call,” he

explains.

The youngest of the six children of Jack

and Connie Connolly and preceded in life

by John, Rosemary, twin Colleen, Kathleen

and Christine, he attended St. Joseph School

in Downingtown, and after the family moved

to St. Philip Neri Parish in Lafayette Hill, at

Bishop Shanahan High School.

“Without a doubt my parents raised us

in the faith with Mass every Sunday,” he

remembers. “They gave Christian witness

and are stalwart Catholics.”

It was during his high school years that

he first thought about the priesthood, but

put it off his mind for the time being. He was

way too shy and a priest has to be outgoing,

he told himself, and besides, he just wasn’t

worthy of so high a calling.

At West Chester University, where he

earned his degree in business management,

he became active with the Newman Club

and through that became connected with the

faith in a positive way.

“Father (Samuel) Verruni, who was the

Newman chaplain, was a great influence on

me,” Fr. Connolly recalls of the archdiocesan

priest who now is the chaplain at Immaculata

University.

After receiving his degree at West

Chester, he opted to join the business world

in the field of workman’s compensation for

the next decade or so.

Although he put the idea of the priest-

hood in the back of his mind, he remained

very much a committed Catholic. “I seemed

to believe God was calling me to be a lay

Catholic, perhaps in the married life,” he

said. He nourished his faith through several

groups including YASKI (Young Adults of St.

Fr. Connolly’s Call to Ministry was Always There, but a Response Took Time

Katherine’s and St. Isaac’s, in Wayne), the

King’s Men, and Our Lady’s Missionaries of

the Rosary. He also dated a bit, because the

married life might still be God’s intent. His

spiritual life was and remains really Marian,

including daily Mass and the Divine Mercy

chaplet, and for relaxation there was running

and hiking. But it wasn’t enough.

There was still that nagging idea of the

priesthood. He finally came to realize it isn’t

a matter of being worthy. After all, wouldn’t

it be presumptive for anyone just to assume

they are truly worthy to take on the awesome

task of transforming ordinary bread and wine

into the body and blood of Christ?

“I knew God was calling me and I had to

see His hand in it,” Fr. Connolly said. “I had

to give up my idea of what the priesthood

would be and recognize God was calling me

as I am. He doesn’t call the worthy; we have

to depend on his mercy.”

He entered St. Charles Borromeo

Seminary in 2011 and the past six years have

been a time of continued growth. He had to

give up any idealized notions he had and see

the human side of himself and others.

“We are not perfect, we mess up,” he said.

“God is love and mercy. We have to love

people where they are, not where we think

they should be. It’s a celebration of God

working through his church and a manifesta-

tion of His saving grace.”

About his ordination, Fr. Connolly com-

mented, “It’s a very humbling experience. It

is a celebration of God working through his

church. The Holy Spirit has been calling me

where I am and who I am. God will direct

me.”

I t was a pretty crazy 24 hours on July 22nd

for Shanahan alumnus, Ian Miller ’10. The

speedy outfielder started for the Arkansas

Travelers of Double-A the night of June

21st, collecting two hits, and after the game

was immediately put on a plane and sent to

the Tacoma Rainiers after being promoted

to Triple-A. Miller says he knew about the

trade, but still didn’t totally expect a call up.

“No I didn’t really know,” Miller said.

“People think about it when they see it

and I thought about it a little bit but I was

prepared to stay in Arkansas all year, that’s

just how I was planning. That’s how I had to

Mariners Promote Ian Miller to Triple-AReprinted from Hardball Scoop (Jamey Vinnick)

keep my mindset and keep focused and not

think about the other factors. I heard a little

before the game, but was told officially after

we finished our game.”

Part of what made Miller the obvious call-

up choice is the year he’s having. Miller was

slashing .325/.382/.430 with four home runs.

His Class AAA debut game was marked with

two hits and a spectacular diving catch to lift

the Tacoma Rainiers to a 4-1 Pacific Coast

League victory over Sacramento.

The hitting has been a nice luxury for

Miller this year, but it’s his speed and base

stealing ability that’s made him such an

interesting prospect. He’s nabbed 30 bases

this year, after swiping 49 last year and 50

two years ago.

“It’s not something I woke up with one

day, I’ve been working at it pretty hard.” he

added. “It’s always mostly been there, but

I had to refine my skills a little bit and get

better on the bases. It’s easier to steal bases

when I’m getting on more often too. It’s just

mostly been about me knowing my game and

trying to be the best version of myself day in

and day out.”

N ancy McGovern Pia is a 1968 grad-

uate of Bishop Shanahan. She’s

recently written a book titled, Creativity

As A Second Language: A Guidebook for

Discovering, Nurturing & Unleashing

Your True Creative Spirit. Here she offers

her thoughts on the book, creativity and

Bishop Shanahan High School.

How did this book come about? The book is part of a series developed

by Valerie Alexander, who authored the

best-selling book, Happiness As A Second

Language. Valerie is a screenwriter,

director and professional speaker, and

together, we collaborated on a workshop

based around the science of happiness.

It was after that workshop that she asked

me to write another book in the series -

this time focusing on creativity.

What does creativity mean to you? While researching this book, I found

that many people are surprised to hear

that creativity is not just about the arts,

but is a powerful energy available to

everyone. Creativity is about problem-

solving, improvising and sometimes

even reaching the unreachable. To me,

it’s a connection to our higher self and a

higher purpose.

What kept you inspired while writing this book?

Someone once told me that we all

have a book, a talent or an adventure

stirring within us. Yet, I never imag-

ined I’d be stepping out of my comfort

zone to write a book about creativity! It

was both a humbling and enlightening

experience, and I found the process of

bringing something new into existence

exhilarating. That feeling alone kept me

going.

How do you express your own cre-ativity?

Well, I’m an artist by nature. A while

ago I started painting and creating art

for fun, but over time, I’ve been fortu-

nate enough to have some of my pieces

displayed in children’s museums and

private collections. I’ve written three

children’s books, and I’m currently gath-

ering ideas for a fourth book, with the

intention of this one being published.

Children’s literature has always been my

favorite genre.

Any other words for the Shanahan community?

McElvenny read and saved the letters

Ed was the longest tenured AD in West Chester University history, having served for 22 years. West Chester University competes as an NCAA Division II institution; Ed helped build the Golden Rams’ program into one of the most successful in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), as well as the NCAA Atlantic Region. He served 47 years overall as an educator. Ed Matejkovic also served on Bishop Shanahan’s Advisory Board for seven years from September 2007 to June 2015. “This has truly been one of the most difficult decisions of my life,” Matejkovic said. “I have spent a large part of my life at West Chester, both as a student and an employee, and I love this place. It has come to define who I am. It is, in my view, the best job in America.”

Introducing New Faces in Advancement at Shanahan

Wendi Chapman ’90This school year, the Advancement

Department welcomed 1990 alumna

Wendi Chapman as the new Director

of Alumni Affairs and Special Events.

Wendi is a Shanahan Sweetheart with

Jeff Chapman ’88. They have been

married for 19 years and have a son Ryan, a current junior at BSHS,

and another son, Jakob, a 7th grader at Pope John Paul II Regional

Catholic Elementary School. Wendi attended Immaculata University,

earning two bachelor degrees in Accounting & Organizational

Dynamics. The Chapman family lives in Honey Brook and enjoys

their pets, the beach, reading, crafts, and family activities and trips.

Trish KyleBishop Shanahan welcomes a new

Director of Advancement, Trish Kyle, to our

community this school year. She has many

years of experience focused on independent

school and Catholic school advancement.

From 1999-2009, Trish was the Director

of Admissions of St. Peter’s School, a private school located in the

Society Hill section of Philadelphia. She worked closely with other

Philadelphia independent schools and was an active member of

ADVIS (Advancement of Delaware Valley Independent Schools).

Trish has also worked with the advancement team at AIM

Academy, an independent school focused on educating students with

specific learning differences. Her primary role at AIM was support-

ing the EITC/OSTC tax credit program for student tuition assistance,

as well as major gift fundraising for the annual Aim for the Stars

Gala. Before moving to Chester County, Trish consulted families

to navigate the admissions process at independent schools in the

Philadelphia area.

In 2011, Trish joined the staff of Saints Peter and Paul School in

West Chester as part of the Healey Education Foundation pilot pro-

gram to introduce private school best practices in the Archdiocese

of Philadelphia. Six schools in the AOP were chosen to participate

in this pilot program that required installation of a school board,

introduction of major gift fundraising, implementation of enrollment

management best practices, and engagement of various stakeholders.

Saints Peter and Paul School received numerous awards from the

Healey Education Foundation due to the success of these advance-

ment efforts. Most recently, Trish was the Director of Advancement

at Villa Maria Academy Lower School in Immaculata, PA. Trish and

her husband, Jim, live in Malvern with their three children, Nora,

Nolan and James, who all attend Saints Peter and Paul School.

E ach year, Bishop Shanahan High School

hosts an Auction and Restaurant Fair

that provides the Chester County commu-

nity with an opportunity to join together for

a fun, social night. Current parents, parents

of alumni, and friends of Shanahan alike

have been welcomed to attend each year. The

2017 event was a big hit, bringing in over 300

guests and $50,000 in donations to support

BSHS student activities and technology pro-

grams. Classic features of the event included

performances by the BSHS Jazz Band and over

200 auction items. Participating restaurants

who provided delicious menu samplings

were America’s Pie, Buffalo Wild Wings,

Downingtown Country Club, Jimmy’s BBQ,

Ludwig’s Village Market & Catering, P.J.

Shanahan Society Committee Member

The first person I met as a parent at Bishop Shanahan in 1994

was my oldest son’s homeroom teacher at Back to School Night.

Entering his classroom, my first impression was “Wow! He loves

Ireland!” This teacher, coach and Shanahan supporter, Mr. Robert

(Degs) Degnan, was loved by his colleagues, students and students’

parents.

Bob passed away too soon. Many BSHS alumni, faculty, staff, and

friends attended Bob’s funeral in 2002 to honor him. History teacher

David McQuiston noted that, “Green might have been one of the

Shanahan colors, but it was also the color of Bob’s blood!”

Bob’s love for Bishop Shanahan High School is everlasting. He

generously honored the school he loved so much by naming BSHS

as a beneficiary in his will. His passion to help students with tuition

assistance is a major gift that will continue to live in the present and

future in the hearts of those students who benefit from his generosity.

All here at Shanahan continue to keep Bob and his family in prayer.

He will be remembered in perpetuity as a member of the Shanahan

Society and as a wonderful Irishman. Sláinte, Mr. Degnan!

As we consider what is important in our lives, faith is the tool we

turn to in good and bad times. In my years as a BSHS staff member

in the Advancement Department, I heard countless times how impor-

tant a Shanahan education is to preparing our youth for the future.

Please join me and others who have recognized the school we love

in our estate plans. A simple act such as naming BSHS as a beneficiary

in a life insurance policy; gifting a portion of your IRA, 401K or 403B;

or designating Shanahan in your will can make a difference.

Contact the Director of Advancement, Trish Kyle, at 610-343-

like to learn more.

M aureen Morin came to Bishop Shanahan as the Director of

Institutional Advancement (DIA) in September 2002 after

years of volunteer involvement with the Parent Auction. Sons

Nick ’98, Jon ’02, Alex ’05, and Sam ’08 are all graduates, and it

was Maureen’s passionate belief in Catholic Education and her

love of Bishop Shanahan High School that fueled her desire to

raise funds to help all students reap the benefits of an excellent,

faith-filled high school experience.

In her position as DIA, Maureen’s primary responsibility

(among many others) was advancing the mission of the school

through philanthropy, primarily through the Shanahan Fund,

capital campaigns, special events, scholarship and tuition assis-

tance donations, EITC/OSTC tax credit programs, endowment

programs, and other miscellaneous fundraisers. Many who know

Maureen often heard her saying that we do everything “for the

kids.” She loves to share all the good things that were happening at

Shanahan through her many conversations with alumni, parents,

parents of alumni, grandparents, and friends of Shanahan!

During Maureen’s 15-year tenure, she developed close rela-

tionships with many of Shanahan’s benefactors and made count-

few of the comments made by people whose lives were touched

by Maureen: “You have been a blessing to the Shanahan com-

performed at the

Academy of Music

in the Kimmel

Center’s Broadway

Philadelphia pro-

duction of Cabaret

during April 2017.

Kelsey, who plays clarinet, was one of

many cast members that play a musical

instrument on stage as members of the

Kit Kat Club Band. “I’m up on the band-

stand the entire show — 25 songs. I play

the entire show every night,” she said.

There is a personal reason that makes

Cabaret so special to Kelsey. Each night,

when she performs, she is playing on

her mother’s clarinet. Kelsey said, “She

passed away when I was 15. It’s such a

personal connection for me. When I’m

playing her clarinet, she can be there

with me every night. She’s the one who

got me into all this.” Kelsey also served

as a “swing” for this production, which

means she had to be ready to step into

any number of roles at a moment’s notice. It

takes a special actress to be called upon like

that because she needed to be prepared for

multiple parts.
