OFF TO AN AMAZING START... RMR held two events in February,

the membership social on Feb 1st and the Volunteer Party on February 10th. In January we had to cancel our Eiskhana due to the warm weather which adversely affected the ice

conditions in Georgetown. In February, the weather

seemed to turn cold and snow y which adversely af fected t h e t u r n o u t t o ou r t wo e vent s . However, we had a

great time.We w a n t e d t o

thank the Man Cave in Westminster for stepping

in on Feb 1st at the last moment to replace our original social venue. This is the second year in a row that the Man Cave helped RMR out on such short notices.

On February 19th we held our annual Volunteer Party. We have over 100 member s ser v ing in various capacities throughout the year to ensure that our events and activities are successful. Again, we want to thank those volunteers for their continued support of RMR. The driver events at High Plains are particularly labor intensive. For those volunteers that were to receive

awards at our party but could not attend please contact Mike Hebert, our Goodie Store Chair ([email protected]) to arrange to pickup your award. Mike will be at a number of our events and this will be a good opportunity to pick up your award.

In March we will hold two great events! First, on March 17th will be our New Member Orientation and Socia l to be held at 3zero3 Motorsports in Wheat Ridge. This event turns out every year to be one of the best attended RMR social events. Whether you are a new member or seasoned veteran this is a great venue to come out and meet and greet your fellow members. This will also be a great opportunity for new members to learn about RMR and all that we have to offer to our membership. We will have a number of booths staffed by members representing the different programs offered by RMR. The March 17th date was a change from the previously scheduled March 3rd.

Then on March 24th a second-year repeat of the wildly successful RMR DE101 which will be held at 3R Racing in Englewood. Last year’s event was oversubscribed so be sure to register early on Motorsportreg.com. If you have ever wondered

what it would be like to navigate your Porsche through an autocross or drive your Porsche on a race track this is the event for you!

We have already started planning our 2018 Holiday Party which, once again, will be held at the Willow R idge Ma nor in Morr i son on Saturday, Dec. 15th. This party had rave reviews last year and the same team of event chairs Jane Hebert, Carol Thero and Christine Walters have once again agreed to chair this event. In addition, Arnette Schouten will also volunteer as a co-chair so expect an even better time this year.

The 60th Anniversary Committee met on Feb 11th to discuss the va r ious venues and a spec t s of celebrating our anniversary this year. We discussed the first of two multiday events that will be held this year. The f irst event in June will be held in Vail with a number of different activities to keep you busy. The Committee also discussed the special 60th Anniversary shirts that will be offered for sale through our Goodie Store. We hope to have samples of these shirts at our New Member Orientation and Social.

TRY PERFORMANCE DRIVING IN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT Ok, we are going to try again.

Certainly the weather will cooperate this year, as we have quite a bit of pent up demand for our Autocross School after having to cancel the previous two years.

So, mark your ca lendars for our f irst autocross event of 2018. Both the autocross school and the autocross will be held at the Front Range Airport where there is plenty of room to setup a long course with a lot of interesting autocross features. Twists, Turns, and Slaloms all await you to improve and challenge your driving skills.

If you are new to the club, new to your Porsche or other vehicle and want to improve your driving technique or simply want to enjoy your Porsche, we encourage you to register for the Autocross School and Car Control Clinic on Saturday April 28 and the full Autocross on Sunday April 29.

Are you familiar with Autocross? Autocross is a performance driving experience conducted in a sa fe environment at relatively low speeds. You wil l not hurt your car and more importantly you will not hurt yourself. Autocross is a lot fun, and provides small doses of adrenaline rush that will keep you smiling for days. Come out to the school on Saturday and learn to autocross with our experienced instructors. What will happen is you will gain additional confidence in your driving ability, learn the limits of your car’s braking capabilities, practice correct seating, hand, feet and vision positions, as well as push and perhaps exceed the l imits of your t ire’s adhesion capabilities.

By the way, autocross is a social event and a great time to meet new club members and visit with friends.

Autocross School and Car Control Clinic - Sat April 28

Our excellent club instructors will work with you by providing plenty of driving time through three car control exercises. Learn about car balance through a slalom course, throttle steering around two skid pads, and threshold braking and acceleration in a unique triangle exercise. All of this in the morning followed by an afternoon of learning how to autocross using these skills on a full scale autocross course.

PCA Parents, remember the School and the Autocross are both open to licensed 16 and 17 year olds. Do you want to be the BEST PARENT EVER? Register your teenager for the school. We always have an instructor in the car, and the skills they learn are directly applicable to the street.

Autocross - Sunday April 29 On Sunday, we return to the Front Range Airport facility to run against the clock! Are you the quickest air cooled 911, Boxster, Turbo, 914, Cayenne? Run times are around a minute, which is a long time to hold your breath if you haven’t attended the school to learn how to breath! This event is a great chance to try out your new found skills from the school and to compete against your friends.

TRACK TALK Dan CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

THE ART OF BRAKING We’re (finally) creeping up on track

season so it’s about time that I begin focusing on performance driving skills don’t you think?

I could go the easy route and talk about stepping on the gas – applying gradual pressure or flooring it. OK, I just did…a one sentence column!

The art of braking is a whole ‘nother story – books have been written about it. Jackie Stewart says, “Braking is the last skill that a race car driver learns really well.” I agree with Jackie – after a lay-off my footwork and braking touch through the turns are the first to go.

Focusing on your braking is a great way to improve your lap times. But where do we begin?

I suggest starting with our RMR website and reviewing content on the Driver Education page. For “newbies”, you’ll find plenty of good information to absorb from straight-line braking, “heel and toe” downshifting/braking, to trail braking. For experienced track drivers, I suggest studying “The Art of Braking” video.

This video was taken during the Advance Driver Classroom Session at our September, 2017 DE. It features Chris Cervelli, a noted Porsche racer/winner, PCA Instructor, race car mechanic/technician, and our club’s 2013 Distinguished Driver Award winner. Study it – it’s the best 31 minute learning tool; I’ve watched it at least five times.

People often ask, “How fast do you go on the track?” They look at me like I’m crazy when I respond, “Which turn?” Anyone can floor it going down the “highway straight” at High Plains Raceway but how do they take Turn #4 at the end of it? Once you’ve been on a track, you’ll get my response.

Chris expla ins the concept of “maximum minimum speed” in the turns and how to work at achieving it.

Watch the video, take notes, watch it again, and eventually write down your plan to start improving your braking.

When you get to the track, some reminders…

• Practice on slower turns (start with Turn #2 or Turn #11 at HPR)

• Don’t practice in traffic• Take “baby steps” - the faster the

car, the smaller the steps• And finally, SAFETY FIRST!

Don’t take risks beyond your ability or your Porsche’s capability.

Be patient - you’ll probably go slower at first, but you’ll experience a big pay-off in the long run!

I GET AROUNDDanielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGINGVery few things in this world are

forever. Although, to me, the words of Bob Dylan come close. They resonate. They ring true. They maintain their timelessness, and their relevance.

Take “The Times They Are A Changing” and take a quick glance at the rapid-fire changes sweeping across all forms of the automobile business, from product development to racing.

A recent piece in Autoweek talked about how Porsche plans to “stabilize” deliveries, in order to “preserve the marque’s exclusivity, rather than rapidly seeking even higher production volumes.”

Porsche CEO Oliver Blume is quoted as saying “Tradition is a commitment. Without our tradition and without our core values, we would not be where we are today. We plan to uphold the standard of technical excellence set by Ferry Porsche well into the future. Intelligent dynamic mobility has a great future ahead of it. And we have the solid technological expertise, creative employees and unique team spirit to be involved. We have what it takes to ensure that the Porsche brand continues to fascinate — even in another 70 years.”

He goes on, “There will be a triad: plug-in hybrids, emotional sports cars with combustion engines, and sporty electric vehicles. There will always be demand for intelligent sporty mobility. At Porsche, the driving experience will always be at the forefront, but in a traffic jam or when you park a car, the driver might want to hand over control of the vehicle.”

W h a t t o m a k e o f t h i s pronouncement? I hope he’s right. I really do. But I have my doubts. And it begins with use of the word “always.” The fact is, there is no “always” when it comes to products developed and marketed by people. The products, in point of fact, have NOT always been there and, by inference, there’s no

guarantee that they will continue. In his January, 2018 column in Car

and Driver, Ezra Dyer looks at how Mercedes “is pondering the question of how it will stay relevant in the face of automation and electrif ication, forces that threaten to homogenize the automotive market.”

Dyer rides on a 41-foot Cigarette Racing SD GT3, whose power comes from two twin-turbo 1100-hp DOHC 9.0 liter V-8s from Mercury Racing … with a “gigantic AMG logo spanning each side of the boat.”

No, there’s no AMG powerplant underfoot. But it doesn’t seem to matter. It’s a branding exercise, plain and simple.

Dyer talks to Gorden Wagener, Mercedes design head, who tells him that the hook-up makes sense for both parties. “Both Cigarette and AMG cater to rich people who like things that look cool and go fast... Hence, AMG boats.”

It turns out Wagener challenged his design staff to imagine the near-future world and all the ways Mercedes could fit into it. Out came a book called “Sensual Purity,” filled with “not just sleek future cars, but houses, bridges, and public spaces.”

Dyer says, “It’s a preview of a world where car companies aren’t just car companies…. You’re mad Ferrari will make an SUV? Wait till it makes a toaster.”

Then I came across another piece from Autoweek, bearing the headline “IndyCar’s Challenge: Figure Out How to Attract the Next Generation of Fans.”

According to the author, “Nobody, it seems, really knows how to attract the millennials.”

IndyCar president of competition and operations Jay Frye “thinks it’s a multi-layered issue. He believes the packaging of auto racing can attract millennials through streaming and

virtual technology. But as far as the competition on the race track, Frye believes the key is attracting the generation before the millennials, known as Generation X.”

The idea is to, first, connect with Generation X, in order to get them to the track. Then, the strategy is to appeal to millennials, with streaming videos and other digital platforms.

Uh, ok! Although this sounds a bit like the old Steve Martin routine on how to get a million dollars and not pay any taxes. Do you remember? First you get a million dollars … then, when the IRS calls, you say “I forgot.” Or the Saturday Night Live routine about how inf lation is your friend. “Who cares? We’ll all be millionaires!”

What to do? For inspiration, I turn back to one Robert Zimmerman, who wrote, nearly 50 years ago,

“Come mot her s a nd f a t her s throughout the land

And don’t criticize what you can’t understand

Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command

Your old road is rapidly aging.”

Cheers.

MARKING CALENDARS...I don’t know about the rest of you,

but at my house January is all about locking down the “must do” calendar events for the whole year, in order to see what open slots are available for the “nice to” stuff that can be fit in between.

N o w t h a t m y r e g i s t r a t i o n is complete for Apri l ’s Tref fen Tamaya near Santa Fe, and lodging reservations have been made for the July Porsche Parade at Lake of the Ozarks, I’m focused on the third quarter of the year. So, if like me, you f ind September’s Treffen in Banff to be a bit too far, I would like to recommend the Rennsport VI reunion. For the uninitiated, unlike Parade or Treffen events hosted by this club, Rennsport Reunions are hosted by Porsche Cars of North America (PCNA). We say that PCA is about the Cars and the People. Well Rennsport seems to be more about the cars, and the cars. The people part is there, too. But the car element is just overwhelming. At least that’s the case during the day when all of the action happens at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway just a few miles east of Monterey. Don’t get me wrong. You WILL run into people you know and you will probably make new friends, especially if you choose a hotel in Monterey where most of the weekend visitors will share the same weakness for the Porsche brand. But during the

daylight hours, the collection of new and historic Porsches that you will see racing on track is sheer overload. And your access to the paddock is essentially unlimited allowing you to be face-to-face with world famous drivers and toe-to-tire with the largest collection of priceless Porsches that you will see short of, perhaps, the Porsche museum in Stuttgart.

I’ve enclosed some photos from Rennsport Reunion V, held in the same location in 2014. Rather than share the myriad shots of multi-million dollar collectible car-art traveling inches apart at triple digit speeds, I’ve chosen some of the more unusual photos which made Rennsport V even more memorable for me.

Rennsport VI takes place from September 27th to 30th , 2018. Registration links can be found by entering “Rennsport VI” in the search bar at PCA.org.

Want to do an Autocross? We have that!Want to do an HPDE (High Performance Driving Event)? We have that!

Want to do Both? We have that too!

We are very happy to announce that we are hitting the track at Pikes Peak

Inte rnat iona l Raceway w i th a combined HPDE and Autocross event. We wi l l of fer a Saturday Autocross, Sat and Sunday HPDE and even a combination of a Saturday Autocross and Sunday HPDE (this is a great introduction for new drivers to exper ience both great dr iv ing experiences).

For the HPDE, PPIR is a great track for the beginner and experienced driver alike. We will be running about 2/3 of the famed oval, plus the challenging infield road course section, so you get the best of both worlds. If you haven’t felt the thrill of going flat out around a banked oval, then hitting a tight road course, it’s something you need to experience.

The Saturday Autocross will be at the same PPIR facility to the west of the track. A great open lot will be set up by our Autocross Master (aka Tim Drummer) and run with extensive

support form Rocky Mountain Region PCA from up north.

The facilities here are the best in the State, with a fully paved paddock, a large indoor viewing area, and a view of the entire circuit from atop the scoring tower. Plus, it’s only an hour south of the Denver Tech Center, just south of Colorado Springs, right off I-25. RV Parking Friday night to Sunday is also available.

As part of this event, we’ll be hosting an onsite dinner on Saturday night in the track’s beautiful banquet room right after “Beer Thirty.” This dinner is open to everyone, so sign up for the festivities even if you’re not participating in the HPDE or Autocross. As with all HPDE events, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from our dedicated corps of high performance driving instructors, who will give you one-on-one instruction on how to drive your car in a safe, fun and fast manner around this exciting 1.3 mile track.

Registration open NOW on MotorSportsReg • 2 Day HPDE $280 or 1 Day HPDE: $190• Autocross $60• Saturday Autocross & Sunday HPDE $215• HPDE Instructors will receive credits

(sign up by March 24th and double your credit).• Saturday night Dinner is $25 per person – Everyone is welcome!

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with ra l lies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA ra l ly is a competit ive event in

which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typica lly run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade.

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides

a sa fe, control led environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driv ing skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA Nat iona l) i s required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

R MR host s one c lub race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL

Membersh ip soc ia l s prov ide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually pre sented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typica l ly in the “of f months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which conte stant s endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
