L.I.’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Ronkonkoma is awash with legends and stories, from tales it’s infested with piranha to the belief it is bottomless, has magical healing powers or is connected to the L.I. Sound and Great South Bay via underground channels. Lake Ronkonkoma is a kettle lake, formed by the recession of glaciers and
is more than 60 feet deep. Historically, the lake is known as a highly sacred site of religious rituals for ancient Native American Indian tribes, who would travel 100 miles or more in pilgrimages to undergo vision quests on its shores. There are other stories of the infamous Indian princess-sometimes called “The Troubled Spirit of the

Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner:Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner:Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner:Grandma Glo’s Joke Corner: Never Underestimate Granny! A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an old lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. “Pardon me,” she said, “I’m sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It’s just that you look just like my son, who died recently.” “I’m very sorry,” replied the young
man, “is there anything I can do for you?”
“Yes,” she said, “As I’m leaving, can you say ‘Goodbye, Mother’? It would make me feel so much better.” “Sure,” answered the young man. As the woman was leaving, he called out, “Goodbye, Mother!” As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. “How can that be?” He asked, “I only have a few things!” “Your mother said that you would pay for her,” said the clerk….
Apple Bobbing and Other Fun GamesApple Bobbing and Other Fun GamesApple Bobbing and Other Fun GamesApple Bobbing and Other Fun Games Bobbing for apples is a game that has been around for centuries. An autumn tradition often associated with Halloween and other fall festivals, the concept of bobbing for apples is, according to History.com, rooted more in romance than Halloween trickery. As a British courting ritual, young ladies and their potential suitors would vie for certain apples to land a potential mate. Eventually, the tradition faded into obscurity. But apple bobbing was reinvented in the Americas when immigrants introduced the game to children and adults during Halloween parties. At our Halloween Party we will take a different spin on the classic
“Bobbing for Apples”; you will find it very amusing!

Jack of the LanternJack of the LanternJack of the LanternJack of the Lantern Every October, once pumpkins have grown fat and orange, these gorgeous gourds are picked and used in a wide variety of ritual activities from baking pumpkin pie to carving jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween. But there’s no need to wait until October 26, Pumpkin Day, to make the most of your favorite pumpkin traditions. Pumpkins have been grown in North America for 5,000 years. While these gourds are native to Central America and Mexico, the tradition of carving pumpkins began across the Atlantic Ocean in Ireland. The practice of carving “jack-o’-lanterns” began with an Irish folktale about “Stingy Jack.”
The legend says that Stingy Jack invited the Devil to have a drink, but then the tightfisted fellow did not want to pay. Jack tricked the Devil into transforming himself into a coin he could use to buy the drinks, but Jack put the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross. The Devil, so near a cross, could not change back into his devilish self. Jack made the Devil promise not to claim his soul should he die. The Devil had no choice but to agree. However, when Jack did die, God would not allow someone who caroused with the Devil into heaven. In the end, Jack was sent into the dark of night with nothing but a lamp fashioned from a carved-out turnip, lit with a lump of glowing coal. For
this reason, the Irish have long carved images of “Jack of the Lantern” from turnips and, later, potatoes or beets. The scary, glowing faces were used to frighten away Stingy Jack and any other evil spirits. When Irish immigrants came to North America, they discovered a new medium for their jack-o’-lanterns: pumpkins. With their hollow centers and wide, thick, orange shells, these gourds were a perfect vessel. Today, pumpkins are grown on every continent except Antarctica, and people around the world use them to carve jack-o’-lanterns.

Don’t just think about pumpkins on your front porch this fall. As one of the healthiest foods out there, pumpkin ranks with other superfoods like blueberries and salmon as offering lots of different nutrients for low calories. Family caregivers with elderly relatives will be glad to discover that the health benefits that people get from eating pumpkin are especially important to seniors. 5 reasons why pumpkin is
a healthy addition to any
elderly person’s meal: 1-Better eye health. Thanks to all the vitamin A inside pumpkin, elderly relatives can boost vision and improve the health of their
eyes. It’s also a source of beta-carotene, which gives it that distinctive color. Beta-carotene is also important for healthier eyes.
2-Excellent source of fiber. Pumpkin provides nearly 3 grams of fiber per single cup serving. Not only does fiber help with digestion and weight loss, it’s also helpful in regulating blood sugar and lowering cholesterol.
3-Reduce the risk of cancer. As part of the same orange family as sweet potatoes, butternut squash and carrots, pumpkin contains the same cancer-fighting properties that stem from the abundant beta-carotene
in its soft flesh.
4-Stronger and healthier skin. The skin is a key part of overall health and wellness, but many seniors struggle with keeping it healthy. Enter pumpkin’s carotenoids, which neutralize free radicals and may help reduce the risk of cancer as well.
5-Immune system booster. Vitamin C is important for the body to use when healing wounds, repairing tissue, and strengthening bones and teeth. Seniors generally have a weaker immune system, so an infusion of vitamin C can help them withstand any germs that come their way.

Susan Sarandon was born Susan Abigail
Tomalin in Queens, New York City. She
is the oldest of nine children, with four
younger brothers and sisters. Raised
Roman Catholic, she attended the
Catholic University of America from
1964 to 1968, where she was taught by
famous dramatist and priest Father
Gilbert Hartke. While in college, she
also met her first and only husband,
fellow actor Chris Sarandon, whose
name she kept even after their divorce in
1979. It was while she accompanied
Chris to a casting call that she landed her
first major part, a troubled teenager in
1970’s Joe. After Joe, she appeared in
several soap operas and small films
before taking on one of her most famous
and bizarre roles— that of Janet Weiss
in the cult classic film The Rocky Horror
Picture Show (1975). Sarandon’s career
grew impressively as she worked with
such film heavyweights as Robert
Redford in The Great Waldo Pepper
(1975) and was twice directed by famous
French director Louis Malle. It was her
second time working with Malle, on
Atlantic City (1980), that earned the
actress her first Academy Award
nomination for Best Actress. After
failing to secure the Oscar, her career
slowed down slightly in the 1980s but
revved up with her appearance in the
wildly successful fantasy-comedy The
Witches of Eastwick (1987), in which she
performed alongside Cher, Michelle
Pfeiffer, and the legendary Jack
Nicholson. After Witches of Eastwick,
Sarandon became a household name and
catapulted herself to A-list status co-
starring with Kevin Costner and Tim
Robbins in Bull Durham (1988). After the
tremendous critical and financial success
of Bull Durham, Sarandon had finally
cemented her place in the spotlight and in
the hearts and minds of America. Shortly
after filming that movie, Sarandon and
Robbins began a relationship that lasted
over 20 years. They had two sons
together. After her divorce and before
meeting Robbins, Susan had a liaison with
Italian director Franco Amurri. Their
relationship resulted in a daughter named
Eva who was born in 1985. Today, Susan
delights in being a grandmother to Eva’s
two children, who call her “honey.”
This month we will show some of
Susan Sarandon’s Greatest Hit
Movies in our Cinema Room!
