First Sunday of Advent

A s we gather together as a community of faith on this 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time, it is our common prayer to the Father to increase our faith, hope and charity. These gifts of faith, hope and charity are known as the theological

virtues. Sections 1812 & 1813 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church give us a definition of these virtues and tell us what role they play in our spiritual lives.

1812 The human virtues are rooted in the theological virtues, which adapt man’s faculties for participation in the divine nature: for the theological virtues relate directly to God. They dispose Christians to live in a relationship with the Holy Trinity. They have the One and Triune God for their origin, motive and object.

1813 The theological virtues are the foundation of Christian moral activity; they animate it and give it its special character. They inform and give life to all the moral virtues. They are infused by God into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as His children and of meriting eternal life. They are the pledge of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit in the faculties of the human being. There are three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity.

As section 1813 above states these virtues are infused by God into the souls of the faithful. This infusion by God of these virtues into our souls takes place at the moment of our Baptism, the moment that we were supposed to die to sin to live for Christ, to become His disciple, His very presence, in the world. We pray for an increase of these virtues at the beginning of every rosary that we pray before every Mass here at Divine Mercy. It is these virtues that if strengthened in each of us will dispose us to live in relationship to the Holy Trinity as it mentions in Section 1812 above. It is the presence of these virtues that will give us the strength and understanding to live the Word of God that we hear proclaimed week in and week out and especially today.

The First Reading from the Book of Exodus gives the instruction by God as to how aliens, widows and orphans should be treated and how we should act in lending money to others and the consequences involved by those who violate those teachings. The Second Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians speaks of those that have received the Word of God and put it into practice thereby giving witness to the exercising of the virtues spoken of above. In the reading from the Gospel according to Matthew the Pharisees once again gather to test Jesus by asking Him which one of the 613 precepts of the law was the greatest. Jesus’ answer to them continues to be the answer that we live by today. “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

T hese two commandments go deeper than the 613 precepts of the law ever could. These two

commandments go deeper than the even the list of the Ten Commandments which are by the way still a valid guide to help us along the way. These two commandments call us to live as Christ did. As His disciples we are called to be His very presence in the world.

So on this 30th Sunday in Ordinary time let us pray for an increase in the virtues of faith, hope and charity so that we will come to love what the Lord commands. Perhaps then we will realize our responsibility before God to help our neighbor in distress, especially those that are contemplating aborting their unborn children during this Pro-life month of October and the month of the Rosary. That we all might have life and have it to the full=+

CATHOLIC FAITH FORMATION

SACRED HEART & DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS MNISTRY

B esides our Church’s patron saint, have you ever wondered who St. Faustina is and what her charge was? The answer can be discovered in a single entry of her diary:

As I was writing the above words, I saw the Lord Jesus leaning over me, and He asked, My daughter, what are you writing? I answered, "I am writing about You, Jesus, ... about Your inconceivable love and mercy for people." And Jesus said, Secretary of My most profound mystery, know that yours is an exclusive intimacy with Me. Your task is to write down everything that I make known to you about My mercy, for the benefit of those who by reading these things will be comforted in their souls and will have the courage to approach Me. I therefore want you to devote all your free moments to writing. "But, O Lord, shall I always have a moment, at least a brief one, in which to write?" And Jesus answered, It is not for you to think about that. Only do as much as you can, and I will always arrange things so that you will easily be able to do what I ask of you ... (Diary, 1693).

While we are not Christ’s secretary we can devote a few free moments to proclaim His mercy to others; and while doing so, let’s not forget to ask for His mercy, to be merciful, and to completely trust in His most loving and sacred heart.

A recent example of this devotion and proclamation occurred in the home of JUDE & CORA MAMAUAG. Their home was enthroned with an image of The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. This ceremony was led by Father Soane and witnessed by family, friends as well as parishioners from Divine Mercy.

Families or individuals interested in having the Image of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus enthroned in their homes, please contact Flora Cabrera (916) 515-1791 (Coordinator), or Kathleen O’Rourke (916) 548-0805 (Assistant Coordinator). There is also a binder in the Narthex with application forms which you could fill out and submit at your convenience.

To support our new food distribution service, we have ongoing need for non-perishable food items such as breakfast cereals, rice, beans, peanut butter, jelly, pasta, pasta sauce, canned proteins and paper bags.

If you are interested in joining the Angels of Mercy Ministry or assist us with the monthly Saturday food distributions, please contact us at (916) 397-1904. The Angels Mercy Ministry meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Portable Room P9.

Beginning Saturday, November 1st, the Angels of Mercy Ministry to the Poor will be distributing food to the needy in our community on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Divine Mercy Catholic Church Front

COLUMBIAN SQUIRES

The Squires program is designed to help develop our young men as leaders, who understand their Catholic faith, who have a strong commitment to the church, and who pattern their lives after Christ. We do all this while enjoying food, fun, and fellowship. Come find out what the Squires are all about.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

The Knights and Squires will be hosting this event on the front lawn of the Parish. C’mon out and take your best shot!

For additional details, contact Dave Morisey (cell: 916-233-8512) or Dave Leahy (cell: 415-999-0788).

The Knights of Columbus is hosting the Divine Mercy Soccer Challenge. This competition is designed for players to demonstrate their soccer skills…more specifically, the PENALTY KICK. Open to all boys and girls (ages 9-14), where each player will be allowed 15 shots at the goal from the penalty line. Based on where the ball enters the net, points will be accumulated. All competitors will receive a certificate of participation, and the winner of each age group will also receive a new soccer ball.
