WELCOME

W e l c o m e

Welcome to the second ed i t ion of our newslet ter. S ince our last ed i t ion we have been busy on many f ronts , w i th new research in i t ia t ives , say ing goodbye to a cohor t of MSc students and he l lo to a bumper in take of new students , and of course tak ing s tock of the record-break ing f loods in our research catchments in nor theast and nor thwest England.

Our bumper cohor t of 50 postgraduates leav ing us th is year s tarred ten Dis t inct ions at MSc, includ ing our f i rs t tw ins :(ht tp ://www.nc l .ac .uk/press/news/2015/12/twin%20sis ters%20scoop%20top%20honours/). The numbers were swel led by the la test 20 students spending Semester 2 here on the innovat ive mul t i -un ivers i ty EuroAquae programme on Hydro- Informat ics and Water Management , now in i ts 12th Generat ion (ht tp ://master .euroaquae .eu/). Of course, no sooner were the graduates out of the door than we welcomed our new intake of another 49 postgraduate taught s tudents.

The re levance of our work was under l ined by the devastat ing f loods af fect ing Cumbr ia and the Tyne bas in . The peak f low in the Tyne was the h ighest recorded (dat ing back to 1956) and be l ieved to be exceeded only by the Great F lood of 17 71. Th is prov ides a v i ta l context to our work on both f lood r isk management and the impact of c l imate change.

Our p ioneer ing work on Natura l F lood Management in smal l catchments , severe ly tested at our Hal twhis t le Burn exper imenta l catchment in December, i s now under rev iew for appl icat ion in larger sca le s torage schemes.

L ikewise, our model l ing and f ie ld work on Blue Green approaches in urban set t ings has never been more re levant and was enthus iast ica l ly a i red in a d isseminat ion event to 140 stakeholders at the Centre for L i fe in Februar y.

Our urban f lood r isk management research has been boosted by severa l exc i t ing new funded programmes wi th much act iv i ty a t the Univers i ty ’s new Sc ience Centra l s i te . One is the UK Col laborator ium for Research in Inf rast ructure & Ci t ies (UKCRIC), where £10M wi l l establ ish a sur face water f lood laborator y as wel l as c i ty w ide hydrolog ica l moni tor ing includ ing a ra infa l l radar to be s i ted on the Univers i ty ’s ta l lest bu i ld ing th is summer. Another new programme is MISTRAL: Mul t i -sca le Inf rast ructure Systems Analyt ics which wi l l use Newcast le as a case s tudy for assess ing novel water in f rast ructure approaches.

We hope that you f ind the newslet ter usefu l and informat ive – just drop us a l ine i f you are in terested in any of our outputs or courses or w ish to work or s tudy wi th us !

Community-Based Monitor ing and Model l ing for Catchment Management and Restorat ion

E l e a n o r S t a r k e y Super v i sors : Dr Geof f Park in , Dr Pau l Qu inn and Andy Large

Eleanor is a th i rd-year PhD researcher in water resources who or ig ina l ly completed her Undergraduate (BSc Phys ica l Geography) and Masters (MSc Hydrology and Cl imate Change) degrees at Newcast le Univers i ty. Wi th a s t rong interest in f lood r isk management and r iver restorat ion , she has a lso worked for Weetwood and RAB Consul tants for two years to ga in pract ica l exper ience in work ing wi th cl ients such as the Env i ronment Agency. E leanor a lso developed her f lood model l ing and GIS sk i l l s fur ther dur ing a placement at JBA Consul t ing .

Now back in the Civ i l Eng ineer ing depar tment , E leanor ’s PhD pro ject is invest igat ing the potent ia l for a communi ty-based or ‘c i t i zen sc ience ’

moni tor ing approach to ass is t w i th understanding r iver systems and suppor t the management process. She has been engaging wi th loca l communi t ies in Nor thumber land and t ra in ing them to moni tor ing weather ( ra infa l l ) and r iver response, includ ing f lood events. Low-cost and ‘c rowd-sourced’ moni tor ing techniques have been successfu l ly t r ia l led, includ ing the use of apps, Twi t ter, cameras , ‘ k i tecams’ , smar tphones and s imple test k i ts . E leanor is in terested in understanding which phys ica l parameters these non-profess ionals can moni tor successfu l ly, determine the qual i ty of them and whether th is type of data can be used to suppor t rea l appl icat ions. She is a lso demonstrat ing the va lue of these obser vat ions by us ing them to bu i ld, ca l ibrate and va l idate catchment models , includ ing SHETRAN and Ci tyCAT.

E leanor ’s main case s tudy s i te is the Hal twhis t le Burn catchment which responds rap id ly dur ing heavy ra infa l l events. A l though automat ic moni tor ing networks are wel l-developed in the UK, they are expens ive to buy and mainta in , and they are usual ly absent in rura l locat ions such as the Hal twhis t le Burn . A communi ty-based approach of fers a t imely and low-cost solut ion to the col lect ion of in format ion which would other wise be unava i lable and i t a lso involves those who are d i rect ly af fected by f lood ing .

Th is par t ic ipator y research pro ject dr i f ts away f rom a t rad i t ional PhD. I t has enabled E leanor to complete a substant ia l amount of f ie ldwork , work wi th var ious s takeholders in Nor thumber land and prov ide Tyne R ivers

Trust w i th pract ica l solut ions. E leanor ’s methods and research f ind ings have a l ready inf luenced nat ional gu idance documents and moni tor ing tools. She has a lso been inter v iewed by the media about natura l f lood management features and appeared on the BBC News and Breakfast channels :(ht tp ://www.bbc .co .uk/news/sc ience-env i ronment-34087255).
