IMPORTANT FTX NORTHERN ROCKIES COMPATIBILITY NOTICE

Installing this CEF4 Airdrie Airpark requires you to update your FTX Northern Rockies region with the

NRM.001 (or higher version) patch. Please visit http://fullterrain.com/support.html to get the latest NRM

patch.

This patch will ensure your airport elevations are correctly set, and all roads and traffic are correctly aligned. It

will also ensure the coastlines and shores are corrected from the default NRM levels.

Note: at the time of release of this airport the current NRM patch level was NRM.001

This version may now be numbered higher, so just install the latest NRM.XXX patch always.

To install the NRM patch

1. Run FTX Central and make sure your region is set to North America

2. Apply the NRM patch

Note: You don't need to apply the patch before installing these airports; it's quite safe to apply the patch after

you've installed them.

Welcome to CEF4 Airdrie Airpark!

Thank You!

ORBX would like to thank you for purchasing FTX CA CEF4 Airdrie Airpark (CEF4).

CEF4 Airdrie Airpark is the debut payware North American airport from developer Vlad Maly, whose previous

projects include CEN4 High River Municipal and CEJ4 Claresholm Industrial airports, all located in Canada,

Alberta.

Airdrie AB is a small thriving community located just 15 minutes north of Calgary city border and the Calgary

International Airport CYYC. This private airpark is another 4 kilometers west from the town. The scenery covers

about 23 square km area at 30 cm per pixel resolution. The aerial images were licensed from Valtus Inc.,

Calgary AB. Coverage includes the surrounding farms, acreages and oil wells.

On Saturdays and Sundays, during the warm Summer days, there is a party going on at the Airdrie Flying Club

clubhouse. Please make sure you attend! Further included in this package are several VFR enhancements. A

few minutes to the north west from the airpark near the town of Crossfield, and to the south between the

CEF4 and CYYC, there are two sour gas plants, already included in the NRM package. To these plants

illuminated smokestacks and refinery items were added.

Another major VFR addition is the Nose Hill Park, in the Calgary’s north west. This park was developed on a 60

cm per pixel licensed aerial imagery and enhanced with autogen trees. This is another favourite place in

Calgary to take a walk or a run. There are several families of coyotes living there as well, thus you have to

watch your surroundings closely should you be out for a stroll with your pet dog!

Calgary downtown was updated with a number of custom made skyscrapers as well as default FSX buildings,

updated Princess Island which is a favourite place for Calgarians to take a stroll or a jog and west from the

downtown core Westmount shopping plaza and condominium buildings were added to complete visually

correct skyline of the city. The Calgary skyline is clearly visible from the Airdrie Airpark.

History of the Airdrie Airport

The Airdrie Airport A Brief History (1940 to 2005)

The original Airdrie airport was built early in 1940 as part of the Canada-wide British Commonwealth Air

Training Program (BCATP). Although not used as a primary base (like Calgary's Lincoln Park, Claresholm, De

Winton, Sheppard, Vulcan, Lethbridge or Medicine Hat), Airdrie served as a satellite airfield - designated as

the No. 1 Relief Landing Field for No. 3 SFTS in Calgary. Airdrie airfield helped alleviate congestion around

Calgary's Lincoln Park.

The Dominion Government purchased 640 acres of prairie farmland and immediately converted it into an

airport, complete with three runways forming a triangle (this kept the strong prairie winds from blowing no

more than 30 degrees off the centerline of any runway) and two large wooden hangars.

Page 7: CEF4 User Guide...ORBX FTX CEF4 Airdrie Airpark Version 1.0 User Guide – February 2013 Page 7 Cessna Cranes and Avro Ansons were the primary wartime users. (NLS) In 1945, the war's

In 1945, the war's end brought with it closure of Air Force flying in Airdrie. Then in 1948, Gordon Bowers

purchased the property from Crown Assets for the use of the wartime hangars and the runways fell into a

state of disuse. But even as the runways slowly deteriorated they continued to serve student pilots who were

now earning their civilian pilot's licenses in nearby Calgary. It also became a location for farmers to base their

planes and to load pesticide and chemical fertilizers.

Airdrie Mayor, Frank Young, ran a spray business with Tiger Moths in the 1950s.

Page 8: CEF4 User Guide...ORBX FTX CEF4 Airdrie Airpark Version 1.0 User Guide – February 2013 Page 7 Cessna Cranes and Avro Ansons were the primary wartime users. (NLS) In 1945, the war's

ORBX FTX CEF4 Airdrie Airpark Version 1.0 User Guide – February 2013 Page 8

By 1957 the abandoned runways were being used as a racetrack for sports car and motorcycle races. Twenty

acres of airfield property was purchased by Don Southerland, who converted the RCAF hangars and offices

into commercial facilities, specifically for the fabrication of prefabricated trailers for the construction and oil

industries and the airport remained destitute.

In 1969, Tom Conroy purchased the remaining airport and soon introduced a flying club (known as the Airdrie

Country Club of the Air) and fuel services. The Conroy's contributions turned Airdrie airport into a friendly

base for area pilots. Among the dozens of tenants were the Conroy's own vintage Harvard trainers. These

bright yellow planes had served with the RCAF and with members of the Conroy family at the controls,

performed aerobatics at numerous local air shows and aviation gatherings.

Tom Conroy passed away in 1979, but his family continued to operate the airport until 1998 when the

property was sold to its current owners - Airdrie Airpark Inc. It was soon indicated that a housing

development was planned for the southwest corner of the property, new facilities for aviation related

businesses were to be built, along with a new 5,000 foot long paved runway. The new runway was completed

and operational in 2002.

Today, the Airdrie airport remains a haven for local pilots. Year-round maintenance is offered, allowing planes

to flying at night and during Alberta's winter months and fuel services were reintroduced in the summer of

2005. It's a jewel to the Rocky View community.

Welcome to the

Airdrie Flying Club COPA Flight 134

Links

Formerly known as the Airdrie Country Club of the Air (ACCOTA), the Airdrie Flying Club (AFC) continues to set

its sights at increasing awareness within the community about general aviation and the local airport. Located a

short 20 km northeast of the busy Alberta city of Calgary, the growing city of Airdrie is home to dozens of

pilots and mechanics, with an aviation heritage dating back more than 60 years.

Founded in the 1970s by a dozen local flyers, ACCOTA quickly grew into an active group. By mid-decade

membership exceeded three dozen pilots and planes, and the club was respected throughout the province.

However by the middle of the 1980s, the number of light aircraft in the Calgary area had begun to decline and

eventually ACCOTA ceased its regular, public activities.

In the spring of 2005 a small group of pilots decided to reform the club, renewed its status as an active COPA

chapter (Flight 134) and open membership to the public. Two years later the club elected to adopt the name

Airdrie Flying Club (AFC) as a means to better identify itself within the community. Today the AFC is active in

local aviation events, is organizing events to promote flying, introducing children to flight through the Young

Eagles program and promoting the airport through the best means possible - safe, continuous use.

There's only one requirement for membership. You must have an interest in aviation. Membership is open to

everyone and promoted for users of the Airdrie Airpark as we act as a unified voice for the airport tenants and

as a focal point for information from the airpark owners. Meetings are held at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of

the month at the AFC club house. People without airport access are asked to park outside the gates and walk

to the club house.

For more information on the Airdrie Flying Club, our activities or membership please contact us by using the

Miscellaneous information

If you're visiting by air, local businesses can help arrange or provide transportation for you and your

passengers. The airport is 4km (2.5SM) east of the town, so we don't recommend walking.

On approach to runway 12 (short final), there are obstacles in the adjacent field known to cause optical

illusions.

NORDO and ultralight aircraft occasionally use the airport, as well as the two local helicopter companies.

Please be aware that you might not be alone in the circuit.

Manual Scenery Library Configuration

If you do NOT have ORBX FTX installed you can still use this scenery by manually adding the scenery library

entry from within Flight Simulator X.

Here's the steps required to configure the scenery library.

1. Run Flight Simulator X, then select Settings | Scenery Library

2. Click on the Add Area button

3. A folder browser window will pop up.

4. Navigate to the ORBX \ FTX_NA folder

5. Now select the FTXAA_CEF4 folder and click OK

6. You will then see two folders displayed, Scenery and Texture. Now click OK*

*(Note: If you're using Windows 7, click anywhere in the white portion of the folder browser screen that shows

the Scenery and Texture folder, not the OK button - there's a bug with FSX under Windows 7)

7. You will now be taken back to the Scenery Library list of scenery added, and the airport will now be

displayed at the top of the list.

You can now load up a flight at the airport using the "Free Flight" menu.

To disable or enable any feature, simply select it from the list for a brief description of what it is. To disable an

item, simply click the tickbox. Any changes are made instantly and there is no ‘Apply’ button required.

You may click on each item’s description in the list to see the explanation, and this does not trigger the on/off

switchbox. This will allow you to consider which items to disable.

Quick Reference FSX Settings

The table below lists in a handy reference the minimum recommended settings required in FSX to enjoy CEF4

the way ORBX designed it. These settings run well on most PCs and take particular advantage of the custom

mesh and photo-real imagery used in the scenery area.

If you use the settings below you will enjoy a high fidelity experience and good performance.

Setting Value Why?

Level of detail radius Large Reduces blurring of textures

Global Texture Resolution Max Best displays photoreal textures

Mesh Complexity 100 Better terrain definition

Mesh Resolution 5m 5m is required for this airport scenery

Texture Resolution 15cm You may set to 7cm if you want the sharpest road textures, but

set this to 15cm if you experience micro stutters

Recommended FSX Slider Settings

Firstly, like default FSX, dragging all your sliders to the right even with today’s modern hardware, will for most

people result in very poor visuals and performance. We suggest that you begin your exploration of CEF4 using

the slider settings shown below, and then if you find performance to be acceptable, you can move certain

sliders to the right, although we recommend you only move one slider at a time to gauge the effect.

The most critical slider in FSX is the Autogen Density slider. With the way CEF4 has been designed, it has the

single most critical performance effect in the simulator. We'll discuss the best settings for this slider later.

So before you begin your first flight, please change your FSX sliders to what is shown on the following pages.

You may think the settings are too low at first, but we're calling these the CEF4 BASE SETTINGS which is the

recommended settings for medium spec PCs.

The Autogen Density Slider

Because FTX uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to

Extremely Dense in large cities like Vancouver, Seattle or Portland will bring even the most powerful PC to its

knees. We won't mince our words - FTX is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed.

The key thing to remember is that CEF4 is designed to be used both today and in the future, meaning that we

did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a standard which

will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up.

Here's a simple table which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. This has been indexed

to PCs as at January 2011, which means this table will become dated rather quickly. We expect the 'Extreme'

spec PC to be the Entry Level by mid 2012, so of course as FSX gets older, your PCs are likely to get faster.

That said, if you adhere to these slider settings in CEF4 you will get a good balance between visuals and

performance.

Product Technical Support

ORBX has a very simple support policy: “No question unanswered”. That means, should you have any

questions about CEF4 or its use, please feel free to register on the forums at fullterrain.com and then log a

support question in the FTX Payware Support Forum section. ORBX FTX experts will be available to review

your support questions and you will usually get a reply on the forums within 12 hours, often much sooner

than that.

To visit the our support forums, click on the button shown above from the fullterrain.com front page

or click on Help | ORBX FTX Support Forums from FTX Central

Please do NOT email support requests

ORBX provides world-class support on our forums, and it's the only way in which you can receive support for

CEF4. Provided you adhere to the forum terms of use and have a legitimate copy of CEF4, you will always be

offered our support at no cost as we work toward a problem resolution each time.

However, if you email ORBX asking for support, you will most likely not receive an answer at all, since our

policy is that all support is provided through our forums only.

Use the forum ‘Search’ function

Before you post a question, please try searching for the answer first, using the forum’s built-in search function

located on the forum menu bar.

What to Include in Your Support Forum Requests

If at all possible, this is what we’d like to see provided for each request you log:

• A separate post on the FTX support forums for each issue (don't tag new issue reports onto others)

• Include your ORDER NUMBER from your CEF4 purchase in your post or forum signature section

• A screenshot to highlight what you are talking about

• A descriptive post title which clearly states what the issue is

• Detailed comments in your post about what you are reporting on

The ORBX support team is always on standby to assist you with any problems you may have, or will comment

on your issue reports. Please remember, our priority is fixing any urgent issues first, and addressing bug

reports second. Clearly though, any “show stopper” bugs will be given top priority though.

FTX Community Forums

September 2011.

information posted by ORBX staff, but if you’d like to join in on the discussion there and view tips, guides and

in-depth support questions and answers, simply create your own account. It’s instant and no validation email

is required. We like to keep things simple. ☺

We hope to see you there soon!
