It is very exciting to be part of an organization and a community that cares so much

about its animals. The CVHS staff and volunteers work tirelessly to care for over 1,500

animals each year. I find it very encouraging to see these hard working people motivated

by an awareness of the importance of the work they do. As the Executive Director of

the CVHS, I am fortunate to be leading an organization that has such great people and

great programs that contribute essential services to our community. It is my intent to

ensure that we consistently work to expand and improve our services to the people and

animals of eastern Iowa. I want to thank the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers

for the time and energy they have devoted to this organization and the animals it cares

for. I also want to express a very special thank you to all of our donors and supporters.

The combined efforts and generosity of all of you are making a difference for hundreds

of homeless animals every month.

From the Director’s Desk

The Cedar Valley Humane Society is a nonprofit organization in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Established in 1901, the organization’s early cases involved cruelty and abuse of women, children, the elderly, and animals. As time passed, the focus narrowed to animal welfare. In 1968, the organization built and moved into its current facility. In 1991, we became the Cedar Valley Humane Society. Our shelter can accommodate 50 dogs and 200 cats. We offer refuge to nearly 2,000 homeless animals each year.

The Cedar Valley Humane Society receives no federal or state funding, nor are we associated with any national organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States or the ASPCA. We rely soley on service fees and donations from the local community to enable us to offer vital services such as animal rescue and critical care for homeless, abandoned, abused, sick and neglected animals. Without your generosity, these animals would not receive the help they need and deserve.

In January 2012, The Cedar Valley Humane Society accepted 15 Cocker Spaniels that were part of a rescue operation conducted by the Animal Rescue League (ARL) of Iowa and Sac County officials. A total of 88 dogs were removed from deplorable conditions at a property in Sac County.

All of the dogs were examined for medical issues and treated as necessary, and ultimately each of them were adopted to wonderful homes.

Papa Mia (now Stretch) Stretches Out in His New Place

“We adopted Stretch back in July. He has been a great addition to the family. He took to the family right away, like he has owned us his whole life! He was never scared, not for one minute. He came in, checked out the house, then flopped down in the middle of the floor and stretched out as far as he could. We highly recommend your facility and all you do for the animals. Thank you so much for the newest member of our family!”

Ruth (now Hennepin) Loves to Kiss Chins

“We renamed Ruth Hennepin, which she caught onto almost immediately. We decided on that name because the other two dogs that we’ve had we have named after places that we lived. Hennepin has definitely made a home with us. She loves to follow me around the best. She is always a foot behind me, right next to me, or on my lap. She also loves both my husband and our son Liam and shows them both so much affection as well. She loves to give kisses on our chins. We are so happy that she fit right into our home, and she is obviously happy to be with us. Thank you for helping us find her. She’s added so much joy to our family!

Pippin is the Best Pet Ever!

“Pippin is now three and still with me. He is amazing. He now has 2 cat scratchers, his own ottoman, his own water fountain, a cat tree, cat grass & cat shelves. He is spoiled. I’m even thinking about adopting a new playmate. Pippin is the best pet I’ve ever had. I hope he is with me for a very long time. Thank you for letting me adopt my little friend.

How You Can Get Involved

Loyal Supporters ProgramBecoming a Loyal Supporter of the Cedar Valley Humane Society is an easy way to make ongoing, regular donations to support the animals!

Donating each month makes giving more economical. For example, a $25 donation each month equals a $300 annual contribution. For many people, budgeting $25 each month is more affordable than a $300 lump sum donation.

The donation is automatically applied to your credit or debit card on the 15th of every month. For more information on how you can become a member of the Loyal Supporters Program, visit www.cvhumane.org.
