Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to the first edition of our new newsletter - Keeping up with the Joneses.

The aim of this newsletter is to share with you a selection of the many things that have been going on at the school. At the start of the term, your child’s Achievement Team Leader and I met with all of the students through a series of assemblies and in particular, wel-comed our new students, predominantly in Year 7 and Year 12; they have already struck me as an impressive group of students and I look forward to them contributing to the success of Cecil Jones Academy over the years to come.

Over the summer holiday, the Loxford Trust has invested heavily in the school by purchasing computers for two ICT suites, remodeling the students’ toilets and renovating the whole of the PE area, including the changing facilities and toilets. The students have responded extremely positively regarding their new modern facilities.

Looking to the immediate future, we look forward to welcoming families of students in Year 7 to our ‘Meet the Tutor’ evening on Thurs-day 7th November and also the families of our Year 11 students to our 6th Form Information Evening on Thursday 28th November.

Finally, on behalf of the staff at Cecil Jones, I would like to thank the students for making a positive start and embracing the new expec-tations regarding uniform, behaviour and punctuality. We are seeing strides forward being made already. Following feedback from par-ents, students and staff, we will no longer be using the ‘Show my homework’ facility. All homework will now be recorded in the student planner. We ask for your support and encouragement in the completion of homework by signing the planner each week. Your child is expected to bring their planner and reading book to school every day and have them both on their desk each lesson. Thank you in ad-vance for your support with this. We hope you enjoy this inaugural edition of Keeping up with the Joneses.

Mr R Micek Executive Headteacher

The artistic talents of Cecil Jones 6th Form were on show on Friday 27th September, when they organised a superb whole school charity event in aid of Macmillan Cancer support. Students baked and provided cakes, made milkshakes and ran a tom-bola stall. The community of the school was united in their support of this worthy cause. Congratulations to all students involved in the organisation of this event and a big thank you to all students, staff and parents for their kind support. As a school, we raised over £330 for Macmillan Cancer support.

Cecil Jones School Tie

After the half-term break, all students in

years 8 to 11 will be issued with a new Cecil

Jones tie, the same tie as the new year 7 stu-

dents are currently wearing. Your child’s clip-

on tie will be exchanged, at no cost, for one

of the new ties. Once all of the ties have been

issued, clip-on ties will no longer be part of

the Cecil Jones uniform. If your child misplac-

es this new tie, then a new one will need to

be purchased at a cost of £5.50 from either

the school finance office or

All hail Macbeth!

On Friday 27th September, 70 students in Years 10 and 11 visited the Towngate Theatre, Basil-don, to watch a performance of ‘Macbeth’. At just 70 minutes, this engaging, fast -paced adaptation of Macbeth was the per-fect introduction to Shakespeare for a modern audience. With themes of ambition, power and revenge, this dynamic production captivated students until the bitter end. Quite surprisingly, the entire play was performed by just three actors!

The students had the rare opportunity to speak to the actors at the end of the play; they were able to ask questions in relation to the performance, but more importantly, on key themes and quotations which could help them in their understanding of the play and the Literature exam.

Clara Robson, Year 11, said, “The Macbeth trip was gripping; we got to experience the Scottish play in real life. Hearing the ac-tors’ tips after the show was engaging; I feel it will really help me with my Literature exam. The play seemed to cement cer-tain quotes and scenes in my head; it will be something that will help a lot to look back on when I’m revising this year.”

Thank you to the English department for organising such an enjoyable trip.

Visit to the Houses of Parliament As part of the Jack Petchy Award Scheme, Cecil Jones stu-dents were excited to be invited to the Houses of Parliament (Palace of Westminster.) They were given a guided tour of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons, plus additional historic rooms including the Queen’s Robing room and the Royal Gallery. Students learnt a lot about the roots of our democracy and the history of the buildings – the oldest section being founded in 1079. Later on in the morning, they were invited to Question Time with our Southend MP, Sir David Amess, where students asked some poignant questions concerning local issues and then were taken onto the balcony which overlooks the River Thames and the London Eye, where generally only MPs and Lords are allowed to go. Everyone at Cecil Jones Academy is grateful to the Jack Petchy Foundation for making this trip possible.

Art Club

KS3 Art club is underway. The students have been working on 3D Papier Mache letters which will be displayed all around the school. So, if your child would like to be part of a team who will have their amazing artwork displayed around the school, then please get them to come along to the KS3 Art club - every Tuesday 3.15pm to 4.15pm in CG4 with Ms Smith. Please visit the school’s website for more infor-mation on the many clubs we have to offer.

Dance Workshop

On the 15th October, a group of talented year 9 and 10 dance students took a part in a special workshop with the legendary English National Ballet. We joined Abbs Cross School, also part of The Loxford School Trust. The students were a credit to the school all showing off their dance skills and working brilliantly with other students to both learn and choreograph their own routines. The students learnt set studies from a West End dance performance Giselle, all delivered by an English National Ballet dancer who was previously in this performance. All students worked hard to develop their ballet and contemporary skills ready to transfer over into their lesson.

Music Assembly led by Natasha Stewart

On 26th September, we had a lovely music assembly led by Natasha Stewart. Natasha has toured the world as a singer with Little Mix, Beyonce and Rita Ora to name a few. Natasha per-formed many songs for our students and also spoke about careers in the music industry. Nata-sha discussed mental health and her own battles with depression having lost her Mum at a very young age. Students thoroughly enjoyed the assembly and we look forward to seeing Natasha on our television screens in the near future.

Our students were a real credit to Cecil Jones Academy and I would like to congratulate and thank them for the warm welcome they gave to Natasha.

Accelerated Reader successes

This is a programme that allows students to enjoy reading a book specifically tailored to their reading ability and follow this with an online challenge which gives immediate feedback on their understanding of the book. The regular feedback and the sense of ac-complishment and achievement that comes with it motivates and encourages students to continue the enjoyment of reading and challenge themselves to move up the various levels. Congratulations to the following students: Keaton Howlett, he has so far taken 9 quizzes and has read over 635,906 words since 3rd September 2019. Arturs Buikis, has so far read over 432,417 words. Emma Taylor, has read 390,081 words. Last year Emma was one of our first ‘word’ millionaires and continues to rapidly move up the word count board. Other students who have read over 250,000 words are: Alexander Gutteridge Ailara, J-Quan Simpson, Szymon Blasiak, Riley Amour and Iqbary Mtambo. Our top readers in Year 7 are: Thomas Newman-Hooper, who has already over 133,811 words and taken 7 quizzes. Rocco Dobson has read over 95,773 words, Lilly Despy has read over 78,632 words and congratulations to 7J who combined, have read over 239,416 words.

We will be continuing the theme of motivation and challenge by awarding prizes to the tutor group with the most read words at the end of this term!
