A Survey of K-12 Engineering Programs: Presenting Options (Repeated Sessions)

STEM Initiative Models (1 hr. session)

K-12 Teachers, Administrators, Curriculum Managers (Grade Level: K-12)

There is a growing recognition of the need to provide opportunities for students to explore engineering across the K-12 spectrum, yet one challenge is how to begin the search for options that meet the specific needs of a teacher, school or district. This session presents over 40 programs, varying by grade level, flexibility, ease of use and cost. Most of the details are taken from the recently published 3 volume "Go-To Guide for Engineering Curricula: Choosing and Using the Best Instructional Materials for Your Students" (Corwin Press, 2015).

iSPACE - Lunar Research Base Project

STEM Initiative Models (1 hr. session)

K-12 Teachers, Administrators, Curriculum Managers, Representatives from Business/Industry/Organizations (Grade 5)

In 2013 and 2014, iSPACE conducted the Lunar Research Base (LRB) project for 5th grade students at Fairfield Intermediate and Hyde Park Elementary with Procter & Gamble funding through the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative (GCSC). The LRB project used an inquiry-based learning approach that fosters team building and standards-based activities. It encouraged students to build cooperative learning, design, and engineering skills. The project also included Professional Development workshops and concluded with a STEM career awareness event for students and parents hosted by iSPACE’s industry partner, Ethicon.

Building a Game Design and Entertainment Technology Academy

STEM Initiative Models (1 hr. session)

K-12 Teachers, Administrators, Curriculum Managers, Representatives from Business/Industry/Organizations (Grade Level: 7-12)

Madison, Monroe, and Talawanda school districts, in conjunction with the Butler County Education Service Center, Zulama, and Miami University, were awarded an Ohio Straight A grant to collaboratively design and implement an Entertainment Technology Academy in each respective school district. This program uses curriculum that is based on Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Masters Degree program. Each school district is implementing two new courses each year over the next five years that will not only engage students at a higher level, but will also prepare them for innovative university degree programs and for the 21st century workplace. The engaging, rigorous, and motivating curriculum will help to keep students engaged, increase attendance rates and enrollment, and provide students with skills that will apply to the jobs of the 21st century. Students are challenged in both collaborative project based learning environments, as well as provided with the technical skills that will allow them to stand out.

The Next Generation STEM Classroom Project: PD for NGSS and Beyond

STEM Initiative Models (1 hr. session)

K-12 Teachers, Administrators, Curriculum Managers, Representatives from Business/Industry/Organizations (Grade Level: K-7)

The Next Generation STEM Classroom (ngSC) project, funded in 2013 by the Toyota Foundation, takes master teachers from Northern Kentucky University’s Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics into 19 school districts across Northern Kentucky for embedded, sustained, professional development (PD) in STEM teaching and learning. The master teachers model best practices in real classrooms with real students for a group of in service and pre-service teachers, then retreat to another room for the second part of the PD, where participants explore and discuss the lesson in depth. Participants take their learning and resources back to their own teams in a teacher-lead model. Since its inception in Fall 2013, the ngSC has offered direct PD to over 500 teachers and 100 pre-service teachers, with considerable improvements in participants’ self-reported knowledge and understanding in several areas that they are evaluated upon by their own districts. In this session, presenters (including the ngSC’s three master teachers) will discuss the project, lead the audience through some ngSC activities and answer questions.

The Creation and Application of an Outdoor Lab Space

STEM Initiative Models (1 hr. session)

K-12 Teachers, Administrators, Curriculum Managers (Grade Level: 6-12)

This presentation focuses on how an outdoor lab space, big or small, can be used to teach STEM disciplines to students and expand those opportunities to the community. Bio-Med Science Academy currently houses a 22 acre outdoor lab space consisting of wetlands, marshes, a forest area, and 2 retention ponds. This space can be used for field lessons in biology, engineering, personal fitness, team building, and many more. We have already taken several steps to turn this unused natural space into a STEM-based learning environment for the students and surrounding community.

3D Printing and Challenged Based Learning

Interactive Workshop Session (1.5 hour session)

K-12 Teachers (Grade Level: 5-12)

The workshop will open with a hands-on activity working in groups of three to four to create and test a front impact protection system for a model car. During this session, we will examine the use of 3D CAD software to create projects that use the Engineering Design Process (EDP) and 3D printing to create a solution to a real world problem. We will discuss various options for free CAD software and overview different 3D printer. As the cost of 3D printing continues to decrease, it is becoming a more realistic option for any classroom. It is great teaching tool that offers students a chance to have a hands-on engineering experience by designing their own products.

Design your own Toothpaste: a High School Interdisciplinary Approach

Interactive Workshop Session (1.5 hour session)

K-12 Teachers (Grade Level: 7-12)

The presenters will share an interdisciplinary lesson taught in a 9th grade science lab, Algebra 1 math class, 9th grade social studies, 9th grade English class, and a 9th grade Technology Education class. The science teacher who taught a unit on Acids and Bases wanted make it interdisciplinary. After discussion with the team, they decided to make it a lesson about toothpaste. The social studies teacher taught the students about the history of toothpaste during her lesson on World War 1; the period when toothpaste was invented. She also taught them how to use Movie Maker so the students would be able to create a commercial for their toothpaste. The English teacher taught the students how to create a story board for the commercial. The Technology Education teacher supervised the creation of the toothpaste and allotted time for the students to make their commercials.

Integrating the Engineering Design Process into Math and Science Classrooms by Incorporating the Use of Technology (Repeated Sessions)

Interactive Workshop Session (1.5 hour session)

K-12 Teachers and Curriculum Managers (Grade Level: 6-12)

In this workshop, come and interact with two current middle school teachers as they share their experiences with implementing the Engineering Design Process (EDP) in the classroom while incorporating the use of technology. Walk away from this session with ready-to-use lessons that tie into the common core for 7-12 mathematics and science classrooms. Be prepared to experience the EDP for yourself within a short challenge activity using web tools that you will be able to implement as soon as you are back in the classroom. Support will be provided as we use free services such as Schoology, Google Drive, ShareMe, and Screencast-O-Matic to bring the Engineering Design Process to digital life.

Quadratics in Stunts

Interactive Workshop Session (1.5 hour session)

K-12 Teachers (Grade Level: 10-12)

Participants will explore how to make Algebra II standards in the Common Core seem more relevant to students by creating engaging instructional modules incorporating the Engineering Design Process (EDP.) Specifically, they will investigate how to enhance students' understanding of quadratic equations as they are applied to real life situations. Participants will apply the EDP to solve a stunt movie challenge. The challenge encompasses collecting data to determine if the stunt follows a line/curve of best fit in order to find a solution using the two developed equations.
