Understanding Emotional Communication and Countertransference in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Presenter: Paul Geltner, DSW, LCSW This workshop will discuss how to identify and understand emotional communications from the patient to the analyst through the analysis of the therapist's countertransference. It will cover: The theoretical underpinnings for the concept of emotional communication and how the analyst's feelings in the countertransference can be used to understand the patient's transference repetitions. The relationship of the concept of emotional communication to the fundamental concepts of psychoanalytic practice: unconscious repetition, transference, and countertransference. A model for identifying emotional communication from the patient, and for differentiating the objective countertransference, the dimensions of the analyst's feelings that are understood to be consistent with the patient's life story, from the subjective countertransference -- the dimensions of the analyst's feelings that are rooted in the analyst's own life story. An in-depth examination of the four major types of objective countertransference as they are manifest in the analytic situation: narcissistic countertransference, object countertransference, projective identification countertransference, and anaclitic countertransference. The aspects of the analytic relationship that are non-transference, and are anchored in the present will also be considered. This course will not cover technique in any sort of systematic way, and is compatible with a wide range of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches to technique, both interpretive and non-interpretative. Learning Objectives: Attendees will understand the concept of emotional communication, its role in psychotherapy and its relationship to the fundamental concepts of psychodynamic practice: unconscious repetition, transference, and countertransference. They will be able to differentiate feelings that can be used to understand the patient from feelings that are related to their subjective reactions to the patient. This will involve an in-depth examination of the four major types of countertransference states: narcissistic; object; anaclitic and projective identification. The aspects of the analytic relationship that are non-transference, and are anchored in the present will also be considered. Presenter: Paul Geltner, DSW, LCSW is the author of Emotional Communication: Countertransference Analysis and the Use of Feeling in Psychoanalytic Technique, as well as papers on dreams, child and group analysis. He was formerly the Director of Psychoanalytic Education at the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Study Center. It will cover:

• The theoretical underpinnings for the concept of emotional communication and how the analyst's feelings in the countertransference can be used to understand the patient's transference repetitions.

• The relationship of the concept of emotional communication to the fundamental concepts of psychoanalytic practice: unconscious repetition, transference, and countertransference.

• A model for identifying emotional communication from the patient, and for differentiating the objective countertransference, the dimensions of the analyst's feelings that are understood to be consistent with the patient's life story, from the subjective countertransference -- the dimensions of the analyst's feelings that are rooted in the analyst's own life story.

• An in-depth examination of the four major types of objective countertransference as they are manifest in the analytic situation: narcissistic countertransference, object countertransference, projective identification countertransference, and anaclitic countertransference. The aspects of the analytic relationship that are non-transference, and are anchored in the present will also be considered.

• This course will not cover technique in any sort of systematic way, and is compatible with a wide range of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approaches to technique, both interpretive and non-interpretative.
