Reading Discussions

Discussion Page

Green “star” by Discussions link indicates messages have been posted since the last time the Discussion board was accessed.

Click on the Discussion link to go to discussions page.

Open Discussion Topic to Read Posts

Click on the link for the discussion topic you want to open (read)

Discussion Topics: Viewing Options

Expand All

Expand All

Shows all posts in each thread of the topic and indicates those that have not yet been read (“New”)

Collapse All

Collapse All -

Only Thread title line shows with the number of unread messages shown in bold in the “Messages” column

Display - Threaded

Replies are shown beneath the associated post with indentations indicating “sub-threads”.

NOTE: This is the recommended setting.

Display - Unthreaded

Posts are shown in the sequence in which they were made, regardless of the thread to which they belong.

Note: This is NOT the recommended setting since all but the original message in a thread appears ‘out of context’.

Display “All”

All posts are shown. Unread are shown in bold type font. Makes it easy to follow a ‘discussion’ since you can easily click on the message above to see prior post to the discussion.

This is the recommended setting.

Display – “Unread”

Only ‘unread’ messages are shown. Can be difficult to follow a conversation since the preceding message to which a post is responding is not shown.

NOT the recommended setting.

Other Options – Printable View

Printable View

1. Select the threads that you want to view in printable format (click box by “subject” to select all threads with one click.

At the end of each post, you have the option to reply to the post or to forward it.

Other Options, “Move to” and “Copy To…”

“Move to” … move a post to a different discussion topic

“Copy to” … place a copy of a discussion post in a different topic.

“People Links”

To the side of each student’s name in the list of discussion posts is a dropdown menu for “people links”. Clicking on that link will give you an email button that you can use to send an email to that student without having to leave the discussion tool.
