I. INTRODUCTION

Extraction of undisturbed

soil is a very tricky process, one mustmake sure that the sample will not breakor will be exposed to moisture. Thusexperiment no. 1 had to be separatedinto parts A & B.

There will be no data anddata analysis for this experiment, sinceit is only the extraction process. Testingand data gathering will be done in thelab.

II. OBJECTIVES

To successfully extract twoundisturbed soil samples.

III. MATERIALS/APPARATUSES

  Shovel

  Round fencing bar

  trowel

small flat digging tool/pocket knife  beaker/large container

  matches

  stirring rod

  parafine/candle wax

fire producing materials(alcohollamps, or a small bon fire)

  measuring tape

IV. METHODOLOGY

1. Select an appropriate location forthe soil extraction. Make sure thesoil will not have a lot of roots, stones or sand.

2. Once you’ve chosen yourlocation, mark the parameters ofthe whole you will be digging, itshould approximately be 2ftx2ft.

3. When you start digging, onemember of the group should alsostart melting the wax.

4. Your whole should at least be 2ftdeep. When you have yourdesired depth you could startdigging around your sample.

5. You sample should be in theshape of a cube whose sides arein the range of 3-4 in.

6. When you see that the top andsides of the sample have theappropriate size, pour wax tohold it together and to preventdisturbing the sample duringextraction.

7. To successfully extract the soil, use your small flat digging tool toslice through the bottom of yoursample, you need to reduce thearea in contact with the ground.

After which you could use atrowel or any flat digging tool as alever to release the soil from theground.

8. Continue coating all the sides of

the sample with wax.

9. To extract your second sample, dig least at 3 in deeper and

repeat steps 5-8 and stor allsamples in a safe place until itwill be used in the laboratory.
