The front cover for this album has a photo of the musician sitting at his piano in what looks to be a urban street.

It features a wide angle long shot of him He is wearing normal everyday clothes The image is relevant to John Legend as it features him

playing the piano which he does on almost every track The only prop is the piano in the image He is sitting at the piano while gazing to the side which

represents him looking out on the world while he creates his music

The background features a built up city street that looks like it could be New York

The shot has been carefully arranged so that you can see the artists face in the reflection of the piano cover which shows he is the main focus

Text The cover features the

name of the artist and the name of the album

The name of the artist is larger than the name of the album meaning the focus is more on him as an artist.

The text is located in the bottom right corner of the cover which is unusual for a CD cover but this allows for the photograph to be fully seen.

Colour The main colours for the cover

are black white and gold. These are used for the font on

both sides of the cover. Black is the dominant colour

of the CD cover because it is the colour of the glossy piano which takes up most of the space

This black has been used as a background for the text on both sides of the cover as the white and gold text really stands out on it.

Back

The back cover has the track list in a straight line down the right hand side with the credits underneath it.

The edges have a gold border with the artists name and the album title on it in black font.

The camera shot for the back cover is of the same piano that the front cover features with the same background of the city

These shots add continuity to the cover

Genre

You can tell from the cover that the artists music features a piano

The cover fits with the soul/ R&B that John Legend is known for but doesn’t tell you exactly what genre it is

Audience

The only thing you can really say about the audience from the cover is that they are interested in piano driven music as this is the main focus (apart from the artist of course)

You could say that the album is meant for people who live in the city as that is where the cover is set

Motifs

The piano is the motif for John Legend on this cover

It is featured on both sides of the album which shows it importance to him as he isn’t even on the back cover

Once again is the only album by John Legend that features a piano on the cover and this is important as it is the only album cover of his that gives an idea as to what genre it fits into.

Its also the only cover that is set in a public place, not in a studio on a photoshoot
