MEET THE 2016 TEAM CAPTAINS

Concordia head coach Shannon Currier has announced four captains for the 2016 season, seniors Sam Johnson (LB, Apple-ton, Wis.) and Dominic Nabak (S, Waukesha, Wis.) on defense and senior Darius Chapes (RB, Floral City, Fla.) and junior Matt

Bjork (TE, De Pere, Wis.) on off ense.

To become a captain, players had to go through an formal appli-cation process that also included reading three books, community service and obtain letters of recommendation. The team voted on the applicants who completed the process to select its captains. Three, Johnson, Nabak and Chapes were selected during the spring season with Bjork earning the distinction following fall camp.

SERIES NOTES: MINNESOTA ST 8, CONCORDIA 2

Minnesota State holds the strong advantage by winning eight of the 10 all-time meetings in a series that started in 2004. The Mavericks have won fi ve in a row and the last two played in Mankato. Concordia’s two wins in the series came in Mineral Wa-ter Bowl campaigns in 2005 (35-21, Griffi n Stadium) and 2010 (28-26, Blakeslee Stadium).

This Saturday’s matchup in Mankato will be the fi rst time Con-cordia will face MSU under head coach Shannon Currier.

LAST MEETING, 2015: MINNESOTA ST 51, CONCORDIA 10

Concordia’s locker room featured a camera crew from ESPN Col-lege GameDay as the network collected footage on Marine vet-eran and defensive lineman Hank Goff who in addition to the GameDay feature would also be selected for the ESPN Disney Spirit Award.

But the energy from a national spotlight didn’t provide enough momentum to topple the #1 team in the country as the Maver-icks pulled away in a 24-point second quarter.

Concordia’s defense was stout in the fi rst quarter, holding the Mavericks scoreless on their fi rst trip to the red zone with a missed 22-yard fi eld goal. Although MSU scored on it second possession, the Golden Bears forced a quick punt on MSU’s third drive as the game was close at 7-0 at the fi rst quarter break.

The end of the fi rst half was the turning point as MSU scored touchdowns with 2:15 and 35 seconds to play for a 31-0 lead at the break.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Tillett put together a solid second half, completing 13-27 for 106 yards and his fi rst career touchdown pass, a 4-yard strike to redshirt freshman Al-

quawn Vickers over the middle on 4th-and-goal in the fourth quarter. CSP was 3-3 on fourth downs in the game. CSP’s top receiver in the game was sophomore Jason Oney who had six catches for 73 yards including a big 30-yard haul on 4th-and-6 from the MSU 31 in the fourth quarter which set up the Vickers touchdown three plays later. Tillett and Oney hooked up four times for 64 yards in the second half.

Aside from the touchdown grab, Vickers had another big all-around day which included a 43-yard kickoff return, four recep-tions for 24 yards and a score, 12 rushing yards and a 15-yard punt return. The league leader in all-purpose yards heading into the game, Vickers once again reached the 150 mark with 15 touches for 150 yards. He was also the combined return yard-age leader in the country at the time, adding 114 more yards to his total which put his total at 851 yards. His 769 kickoff return yards (29 attempts) on the year put him 40 shy of tying Joseph Mapson’s 2003 record of 809 yards on 35 return attempts which he would eventually eclipse by the end of the season.

Vickers’ 43 yard kickoff return in the third quarter set up a 42 yard fi eld goal by freshman Jonas Schenderlein. After the fi eld goal, junior Sam Johnson picked off an MSU pass at the CSP 32 yard line, taking it back 43 yards to the MSU 25.

Concordia held MSU to 2-10 on third downs and held a 32:21 to 27:39 time of possession advantage. But the Mavericks coun-tered by rushing 33 times for 236 yards and built a 412 to 174 yard advantage in total off ense.

LAST WEEK: WAYNE STATE 45, CONCORDIA 10

Concordia’s defense piled up three fi rst half interceptions but the Golden Bears were only able to turn those three turnovers into three points as Wayne State also forced three fi rst half turn-overs, converting them into 10 points in the second quarter for a 17-3 halftime lead.

In the second half, Concordia turned to redshirt freshman Max-

on Hutton to spark the off ense and a 49-yard run by Hutton put the team in the red zone. But Hutton’s fade pass into the end zone on fi rst and goal from the seven was intercepted, ending Concordia’s threat to get back into the game.

Hutton completed 5-8 for 52 yards and rushed nine times for 36 yards in his most extensive work under center this year. He re-lieved Ron Johnson, who would eventually re-enter the game. Johnson was 10-28 for 78 yards passing and rushed six times for 31 yards. Each quarterback committed three turnovers.

.Although the CSP defense held following the turnover, the Wildcats responded by pinning Concordia back in its own ter-ritory and intercepted a third down pass and returned it for a touchdown.

On WSC’s next drive, Concordia was poised to force a three-and-out but on third and six, WSC converted for a 78 yard touch-down late in the third quarter.

The decisive stretch turned a game from Concordia facing a fi rst and goal from the seven trailing 17-3 early in the third quarter into a 31-3 defi cit at the end of the quarter.

By the end of the contest, WSC forced six Concordia turnovers for a 6-3 edge in the take-give and the Wildcats rolled up a 24-3 margin in points off turnovers in the game.

Senior safety Dominic Nabak picked off his second intercep-tion of the year in the fi rst quarter, setting up a 35-yard Jonas

Schenderlein fi eld goal. Schenderlein is now 4-4 on the year.

Senior David Reed and junior Andrew Capirchio each record-ed fi rst half interceptions as well while senior Sam Johnson

had 10 tackles to give him his third 10-plus tackle game in four games played this year as the NSIC’s tackles leader is ninth in the country at 11.0 tackles per game.

He’s also rushed 11 times for 46 yards on the season, adding 98 yards of total off ense to John-son’s total as the starter.

VICKERS COMES OFF RECORD SETTING CAMPAIGN

Sophomore Alquawn Vickers was named a 2016 Lindy’s Pre-season All-America Second Team selection after being a Don Hansen All-America Third Team performer as a breakout red-shirt freshman. The NSIC Newcomer of the Year and reigning All-NSIC First Team all-purpose star led the NCAA with 1,119 combined kickoff /punt return yards and set the single season program record with 998 kickoff return yards.

The standout returner also was one of Concordia’s top receiving threats a year ago with a team-high 37 catches while ranking second with 463 yards and three receiving scores.

In four games in 2016, Vickers has been involved in a variety of ways and is second on the team in all-purpose yards with 417. He’s accounted for 39 rushing, 92 receiving, 6 punt return and 280 kickoff return yards while also throwing a 73-yard touch-down pass against UMD to Elias Arlington.

Originally the eighth head coach of Concordia football in 2000, Shannon Currier returned to lead the program for his second stint in December, 2015.

He entered his fi fth season leading the team in 2016 and remains the program record holder for career winning percentage.

In his fi rst stint, he compiled a 32-12 (.727) record and brought the program its fi rst NSIC Champion-

ship in 2003 when he was named NSIC Coach of the Year. The conference title also brought a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl, the fi rst postseason game in school history.

He coached Concordia to four consecutive winning seasons and is the only coach in program history to achieve the feat - consecutive or cumulative.

THE GRIFF MYTH - PROTECTING HOME TURF

The team also established the longest home winning streak in school history under his guidance. Known to the teams as the “Griff Myth,” Concordia tallied 19 consecutive home victories down the street at Griffi n Stadium. The streak began in 2002 and stretched two years after Currier left through the 2005 sea-son, fi nally falling at the beginning of 2006.

In Currier’s fi rst four years, his teams only lost two home games, producing a record of 18-2 after winning his fi rst and last nine home games.

He opened his return with a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary in 2016, snapping a 6-game home losing streak and a school re-cord 8-game overall losing streak.

CAREER AT TRUMAN

Following the program’s 2003 NSIC Championship run, Currier ac-cepted the head coach position at Truman (State) University where he turned a losing program into a pair of 6-5 winning campaigns in his third and fourth seasons.

His tenure was highlighted in his third year, leading the Bull-dogs to a 6-3 record in a strong MIAA, fi nishing fourth in the league. He left the program following a 4-7 season in 2008 with a 20-35 overall record.

PRIOR TO REJOINING CONCORDIA’S SIDELINES

Following his departure from Truman, Currier spent seven years working outside of the coaching profession as a senior sales manager with iHigh.com working to build a digital platform for high school sports, reaching up to 1.5 million Minnesotans in his fi nal year with the company.

NSIC BACKGROUND & ST. PAUL PRIVATE EDUCATION

He arrived at Concordia in 1999 as off ensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for former head coach and athletics di-rector Dan O’Brien, now an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Concordia, Currier spent two years each in similar roles at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston following his start in college coaching at Bemidji State as an off ensive graduate assistant where earned his mas-ter’s degree in physical education.

A native of Cosmos, Minnesota, Currier was a quar-terback at Hamline University where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1993.

MAEDKE BREAKS PUNTING RECORDS IN 2015

In 2015, Sam Maedke frequented the fi eld and he was excel-lent in numerous opportunities in his fi rst year as the punter. Maedke set school records for most punts in a season (87) and punting yards in a season (3,187) and also the single game re-cords of 12 punts (twice) and the top two single game punting yards records (469 & 456). He ranked seventh in the NSIC with a 36.6 average, landed 18 punts inside the opponents 20 and had four 50-plus yard punts.

In 2016, Maedke has seen less work with 21 punts in fi ve games, averaging 40.8 per punt with nine of his punts fair catches, fi ve inside the 20, three of 50-plus, one touchback with a long of 57.

GUSTAVESON & VICKERS THE EARLY FAVORITE TARGETS

During preseason interviews, head coach Shannon Currier re-inforced two concepts: fi nding ways to involve Alquawn Vick-

ers in the off ense and that freshman Marcus Gustaveson will be an immediate force in the Northern Sun.

Last year, Vickers tied for the team lead in receptions (37) and was second on the team in receiving yards (463) and receiv-ing touchdowns (3) although his fi ve total touchdowns led the team.

In 2016, Vickers has been involved in every aspect of the game as a ball carrier. He has nine rushes for 39 yards, 14 receptions for 92 yards, 13 kickoff returns for 280 yards, two punt returns for six yards and completed a pass for a 73-yard touchdown. He’s second on the team in receptions despite missing a game.

Gustaveson broke loose against UMD with seven catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns while drawing four pass inter-ference calls against the UMD corners.

The duo leads the team in catches, Gustaveson with 17-237 with Vickers adding 14-92. Elias Arlington is the only other tar-get over 100 yards with 9-167 while tight end Bruce Russell has two touchdown catches on 4-60 receptions.

Of the team’s 72 completions, 12 diff erent receivers have caught passes, 10 have at least three catches, eight have at least four receptions and fi ve players have reached the end zone via pass.

BIG TRADE: DECEON FOR VANTWON

During spring practice, the coaching staff made a key swap with Vantwon Melton moving from wide receiver to corner-back while DeCeon Schumann moved from corner to receiv-er. Schumann caught his fi rst two passes for 49 yards at UM Crookston in week two including a long of 35. Melton also made his fi rst appearance at corner in week two for the defense.

In his fi rst two years as a WR, Melton had 25 catches for 220 yards and a touchdown, hauling in 17-145 with the TD in 2015.

Formerly a cornerback, Schumann had 33 tackles including two interceptions taking one back 42 yards for a touchdown in a road win at Minot State last year. He was in on seven passes defended on the year.

OFFENSIVE LINE DRIVES THE PRODUCTION

The team’s ability to execute off ensively will be driven by an off ensive line that includes one returning starter, Terrell Taylor who started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman at right tackle and has started the fi rst three games of 2016 at left tackle.

The off ensive line has been the same starting fi ve three weeks in a row, with Taylor joined by freshman Tanner Haechten (LG), senior Conner McGraw (C), junior Samuel Kessler (RG) and sophomore Ben Lawrence (RT).

Additionally, freshmen Mario Espinoza and Ethan Aune have seen signifi cant early season playing time. Redshirt freshman Hunter Kauff man returned to the lineup with a large portion of reps in week four at Northern State and earned the start at right guard in week fi ve against Wayne State.

DEFENSIVE LINE FEATURES EIGHT MAN ROTATION

The top feature of the 2016 defensive line is its depth and how the coaching staff has utilized its mix of experienced upperclass-men and youthful impact players. The starting line features two seniors, a junior and a redshirt freshman while the second wave of four includes a senior, sophomore and two true freshmen.

The statistical leader of the group is senior Ryan McKee with 23 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks along with a blocked fi eld goal. Junior Chazz Roberts lines up on the interior with McKee and has 17 tackles with a team-high 4.5 TFL. Re’Shon

Howard has 20 tackles, 2.0 for loss and an interception on one end and redshirt freshman Kelly Pierce has a team-high 3.0 sacks along wiht 4.0 TFL and 16 tackles on the other end.

Backing them up, freshman Dylan Wood has 12 tackles, 1.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks and sophomore Adam Miller adds 12 tackles with 1.0 TFL. Freshman Cole Riemer (11 tackles) and senior Gerardo

Figueroa (6 tackles) round out the line rotation.

LINEBACKERS RACKING UP TACKLES

Led by the league’s leader in tackles, Sam Johnson and his 11.0 tackles per game rank ninth in the country. He’s been consis-tent, recording at least eight tackles in all four games he’s played wiht three double-digit eff orts for a team-high 44 tack-les despite missing a game.

In the one game he missed, junior JJ Przybylka fi lled in with a 17-tackle performance in a week two win at UM Crookston. The 17 tackles are fourth most in a game in school history and tied for the NSIC single game high in 2016. He’s third on the team in tackles with 31 despite playing behind Johnson.

The team has produced six double-digit tackle eff orts between four diff erent players - all linebackers.

Redshirt freshman Antonio Zepeda made 14 tackles in his de-but against U-Mary in week one and is secondon the team with 34 on the season.

Senior David Reed returned to the fi eld in week four at North-ern State, making the start at outside linebacker to lead the team with 14 tackles in the game and has already racked up 22 tackles in two games.

Junior Billy Brown started the fi rst three games of the year and has continued to see a large amount of snaps following Reed’s return. He ramins fi fth on the team with 25 tackles on the year including 2.5 for a loss and a sack and has made 12 taclkes in the two games since becoming a key reserve on the unit.

NABAK PATROLS THE SAFETIES

Senior captain Dominic Nabak had a huge end to the 2015 season, making 10-plus tackles in four of the last six games in-cluding a career-high 16 tackles in the fi nale at Augustana. He opened 2016 strong with seven tackles including one for a loss in a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary, had a 70-yard INT for touch-down in a week 2 win at UMC and remains fourth on the team with 30 tackles, leads the team with two INT and is second with four pass breakups.

Sophomore Brandon Russell is the other starting safety and has made 22 tackles with 2.0 for loss and a forced fumble.

Freshman Brian Lanier continues to make a larger impact, making 16 tackles in his fi rst fi ve career games while continuing to play a larger role in the defense each week.

FORE & JOHNSON TEAM UP AT CORNER

Junior Jamie Fore and senior Jonathan Johnson have teamed up as the starting corners in 2016. Fore is a sure tackler, fi fth on the team with 25 stops along with a blocked FG, forced fumble at the goal line, tackle for loss and two pass breakups.

Johnson’s early play has made a huge impact as he’s ranked 42nd in the country and fourth in the NSIC with seven passes defended (INT+PBU). He’s broken up six passes and has an in-terception for touchdown (34 yards) against UMD.

The corner duo are junior college transfers in their second year in the program. Fore started seven of the nine games he played last year while Johnson earned one start in eight games.

With Fore missing week fi ve due to an injury, junior Andrew Ca-

pirchio earned his fi rst start at the corner and made two tack-les with an interception and two pass breakups against Wayne State.
