Since this business of publishing The Coweta Shop-

per is a second career for me, I try to watch what

some of the other successful publications are doing.

Perhaps I can learn something new. But there is one thing my

simple mind just can’t seem to grasp – readership numbers.

According to industry standards, a publisher can legitimately

claim that 3.4 people will read each copy printed. Although I

want to be competitive, I have decided that it’s just way more

trouble than it’s worth. And here’s why.

In a three-week period we mail the Shopper to every home and business in the county

– 50,400 addresses. At 3.4 readers each, that’s 171,360! Since there are not that many

humans in our county, we can just import the entire population of, say, Tallapoosa County,

Alabama and let them read – all 41,360 of them. But that still won’t solve my problem since

six percent of the population of both counties are too young to read. So now we lack 10,281

readers, which happens to be the population of Yazoo Mississippi. We could just bring them

in by bus, but, according to their internet site, 481 of these fine folks are in jail and can’t

“get away”, so to speak. Now, not wanting to say something that I can’t substantiate, I can

ask all of the 481 residents of Warm Springs to get over here and help us read. As it turns

out, 52 of those are in rehab at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehab Center recovering from

a hip replacement and can’t make the trip. Well, that leaves 52 readers, which is the exact

population of Fish Lake, Minnesota – no babies, prisioners or infirms. They can all ride in

one bus and that’s just about what it would take for me to be honest about those readership

numbers.

Fall Color PlantsSchool has started and we begin to think of foot-

ball, fall festivals, Powers Crossroads, the County Fair, and a fresh look for our gardens. There are a host

of plants ~ trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and vines that show wonderful blooms or foli-ages or berries for September to November. Now is a good time to take stock and decide what to add in our gardens. Visit plant nurseries and public gardens to see plants in their Fall splendor.

Trees with lovely fall color include: Dogwood, Japanese Maple, Ginkgo, Service Berry, Redbud, Crepe Myrtle, Sassafras, and Sumac and Crab Apple.

Perennials offer so many choices for fall gardens: Sedum, Rudbeckia, Swamp Sunflowers, Goldenrod, Artemesia, Chrysanthe-mums, Dahlias, Asters, Blue Salvia, Russian Sage, Crocus, Spider Lily, Joe Pye Weed, Yar-row, Queen Anne’s Lace, Toad Lily, Japanese Anemone and Blackeyed Susans.

Ornamental grasses look wonderful now too.

Annuals to add to fall designs include: Ornamental Kale, Ornamental Cabbage, Pansies, Violas, and Snapdragons, and lettuces and parsley.

Produce offers a chance to decorate in our fall gardens, on porches and decks and steps. Pumpkins of all sizes and in several colors are available. Gourds and squashes come in many interesting shapes and col-ors. Corn stalks, okra pods, cattails, and colorful berries and foliages can add color, texture and contrast.

The possibilities are endless!

All you need to measure the pressure of the air in all � ve of your tires is a simple and inexpensive tire pressure gauge. Adding air is a li� le more complicated than before be-cause nowadays you have to buy air from that li� le kiosk at the convenience store where you buy your gas. No longer do we have the traditional gas station where the a� endant or the driver could check and � ll the tires right at the pump or at that nasty machine and kinked hose around back. If you use a repair shop regularly, they will usually check your tires for you and adjust the tire pressure if necessary if you ask them. But having the knowledge and the equipment to do it your-self is the best way to accomplish the task.

First, you need an air pressure gauge. Any of the stores that sell auto supplies will have a variety of gauges. You can buy a pencil shaped gauge for about $3.00. � ey are easy to store, easy to use, but not the most accurate way to measure air pressure. Or you could buy a dial gauge for about $8.00 that is easier to use, and a lot more accurate. You could also buy a larger, more functional gauge for about $40 but you really don’t need to unless you have special needs, such as for a trailer, an RV, or other vehicle that needs higher pressures or very accurate readings. Digital gauges are about the easiest to read and cost upwards of $10. Remember, you get what you pay for but be sure to get what you need.

All that’s involved in checking the air pressure in your tires is to � nd the valve stem sticking out from the rim of each wheel, un-screw the valve cap, apply the gauge to the valve stem and read the air pressure. You do need to make sure that you get a good read-ing, accomplished by practice and technique. Make sure you don’t hear any air escaping, indicating that you don’t have the gauge head on the valve stem squarely enough to prevent escaping air. Make sure the air in each tire is very close to the amount that the label on the door post says it should be. If it isn’t, get to an air supply within a reasonable period of time and add air. You will almost always need to add air, seldom need to let it out unless you over� ll the tire while you are

adding air. Most tire gauges have a bu� on that lets you bleed air out of the tire. If not, push in the li� le pin in the center of the stem and bleed o� a li� le air and then recheck the pressure. � e li� le valve stem caps are always rolling away or otherwise ge� ing lost. Yet they are an important part of keeping the tire stem clean and operating properly. If you lose them or don’t even have them on your car, buy a pack at an auto parts store and keep them where they belong.

What is most important in tire pressure management is that the tires are close to the correct amount. A pound or so won’t make a great deal of di� erence. � e important thing to watch is that a tire is not grossly over or under in� ated and that the tires on each end of the car are in� ated to the recommended pressure and the air pressure in each of them is the same. Some vehicles may require dif-ferent air pressures in the front tires than in the rear ones. � e engineers � gured that out, so comply. For example, the label may specify that the front tires should be in� ated to 36 pounds per square inch (PSI) pressure and the rear tires to 34 PSI

Folks high school is here in full form, however, for the Newnan Cougars the form went to the Devils of Marie� a.

Friday night, August 23, in the Drake (Stadium home of the Newnan Cougars) the Devils of Marie� a came to town and administered a thrashing of the home team. � e � rst quarter was back and forth with no o� ense by either team because of some good defensive plays and a lot of � rst game nerves. However about mid qtr, the Marie� a team hit a 45 yard � eld goal to go up 3-0. A� er that it seemed to be all Mari-e� a for the rest of the game. � e score at the half was 17 - 6 for the visitors and it did continue to get worse especially in the 3rd quarter. � ere were, however, some bright spots for the home team as quarterback #10 Bailey Bryant for the Cougars tossed for over 300 yards and shown here handing o� to his favorite back #39 JK Bri� who gained some-where close to a 100 yards rushing for the evening.

Another pleasant surprise was Se-nior Wide Receiver Immanuel George #17. � is is the young man’s � rst expe-rience at football and in his � rst game he makes the � rst touchdown catch of

the season for the Cougars. It was not a good night for the Cats. However, we must remember that they are playing a lot of � rst time players and they will be a much be� er team a� er a couple of games and I can assure you that they will be in the post season hunt at the end of the season. One positive was the fact that the new Stadium with all the seating capacity was almost full.

“Bye Bye Birdie” Opens NTC’s Fall SeasonThis Thursday, September 5th

“Bye Bye Birdie,” a gentle satire of the rock ‘n’ roll era, with Conrad Birdie (who looks a lot like Elvis Presley) at the center of the plot, opens at Newnan Theatre Company Thursday, September 5. The show offers plenty of dancing and choral numbers such as “Kids,” ”An English Teacher,” “Put on a Happy Face,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.”

When Birdie is drafted into the U.S. Army, his agent Albert Peterson, with secretary/sweetheart Rose Alvarez, desperately plan a final publicity stunt. Conrad Birdie will record and perform Al-bert’s new song “One Last Kiss” on the Ed Sullivan show and give one lucky girl from his fan club a real “last kiss.”

The lucky girl is fifteen-year-old Kim McA-fee from Sweet Apple, Ohio. Conrad comes to town, shocks the parents and drives the teenage girls crazy. Kim’s boyfriend Hugo becomes jeal-ous. Albert’s mother tries to get rid of Hispanic Rosie by introducing Albert to a sexy girl she met on the bus, making Rosie jealous and angry as well. She plots with Hugo to ruin the televi-sion appearance.

Conrad sings “One Last Kiss” on ‘’The Ed Sullivan Show,’’ but he doesn’t get to kiss Kim. Things go terribly wrong, and some embarrass-ing and career-damaging events take place on live television.

After the show, Conrad lures the teens to a disreputable place to party. Rosie, hoping to forget Albert, flirts with Shriners and has to be rescued. Hugo tells the parents where their teenagers have gone, and they all declare that they don’t know what’s wrong with their kids.

The adults and the police find the kids, and Conrad is arrested. Albert bails him out of jail and hurries him out of town in disguise. All ends happily for the rest of the characters, and Rosie and Albert leave for Pumpkin Falls, Iowa, where Albert has taken a job as an English teacher.

Though nowhere near old enough to re-member that era, Director Donna Provencher calls herself “a child of the fifties at heart.” She currently lives in Columbus, Georgia, and com-mutes to Newnan, but for much of her life she has acted and directed in the Washington DC area. Newnan audiences will recall her stellar performance as Becca in “Rabbit Hole,” di-rected by Bert Lyons and performed at NTC in February of this year. She currently owns her own production company, started last year.

Provencher is “tremendously proud” of her cast. “I’ve really been impressed by the way people have pulled together,” she said. “We have a phenomenal new choreographer, Paulo Manso de Sousa, for the many dance numbers. Our music direction has been a collaborative effort between Bruce Patterson and Becky Clark. They are the heart and soul of the music in the show.”

“The cast is so excited and exuberant you would just like to be dancing up on stage with them,” added Provencher. They include Andy Lees as Conrad Birdie, Kevin McInturff as Albert Peterson, and Laura Pratesi as Rose. “She has a gorgeous voice,” said Provencher. Pratesi has played several roles at NTC, most recently in Spamalot.

Kim is played by Steffi Ledbetter, a “one-take wonder,” according to Provencher. “She’s auditioned for ‘American Idol’ and is on call for Cirque de Soleil. Her voice is just exquisite, and she’s only 19.” Bert Lyons plays Mr. McAfee, Kim’s father. Benjamin Dell, “a delight on stage and off,” plays Hugo.

“There’s so much going on in the world today and so much in the media that is dark, that it’s nice to be able to experience a different time and a different world,” said Provencher. “People joke about Birdie be-ing fluff, but it’s the fluff that makes the world go ‘round. It embodies everything that is such a pick-me-up about musical theater.”

The “Bye Bye Birdie” script was written by Michael Stewart, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse.
