‘THE CRIMINAL’Critical Reflection of My Movie

Q1) How does your product use or challenge convention and how does it represent social groups or issues? The genre of my movie is a crime drama film. The main age group being targeted were teenagers, to show the audience about the crimes in which teenagers are mostly involved in todays world. Crews hire them and give them heavy pays for a single murder, of a person who the murderer don’t even know what wrong he did.Product that is reflecting my project is based on interior. After going through different links and sources I started to explore that interior is something that involves lot of creativity and time. It challenges many conventions such as the title being in dominant font and unique as it is what captures the audiences attention most beside image.Another convention that I have challenged is the dialogues. In almost all of the movies of Hollywood, dialogues are the main aspect but there are no dialogues in my movie, just the background music which brings feeling that something bad is going to happen.

The picture on the left is the scene from which I was inspired from. It is taken from criminal cases and documentaries from google. I was very impressed from their acting and how he did the crime. The picture on the right side is taken from the reenacted scene from my movie. The convention that is used same in both the pictures is pillow.

Moreover the USP of my project is background music and suspense. As it is not being shown that what is the reason for crime and why is the crime done by a pillow rather than doing with a knife.

Q2) How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media texts?

As my film is a low budget film, a media institution that will be likely to distribute it will be a small independent company. My film doesn’t have any well known actors in it and is filmed in a realistic setting, which therefore makes my film seem amateur and again likely to be distributed by an independent company. Being distributed by an independent company, would make my film appeal to a niche audience and keep the realism I intend it to have; through advertising and attracting specific target audiences as well I think my film would gain popularity and become successful like the film Bullet Boy, which is a low budget film targeting real issues. that became successful by first of all attracting a niche audience. On the other hand, if my film was a high budget film and had a major production company producing it, unlike my co production companies “Paranoia Productions” and “R.Q Pictures”, a likely media institution that would distribute my film would be Paramount Pictures.

Paramount Pictures distributed The Lovely Bones, which is similar to my film, but they also distributed Paranormal Activity which is of the same genre as my film. Paranormal Activity is a very successful film which is why I think that if Paramount Pictures distributed my film, it could be successful too. This is because Paranormal Activity uses simple filming techniques by appearing to be filmed by hand and is filmed in a natural setting which is a lot like my film as I filmed in a realistic place and used simple camerawork.

Q3) How does your production skills develop throughout this project? This project made me learn and discover a lot. Not only about a particular genre but also how and what things must be done in order to make the movie. The most creative and productive in all of this is using a DSLR with tripod for movie making as well as for photography. It is something I always had interest but never knew that it includes certain rules and regulations too. Knowing about various shot-angles, camera pixels, resolution and not to forget its customization.

Furthermore learning something beyond what is already done by the distributors is developed in mind. Reading other point of view and opinions helped in expanding in my thinking.

Q4) How did you integrate technologies (Software, Hardware and online) in this project?

With proper research and planning before production, as it helped understand what to do and not to waste time deciding on aspects of the film. With the software Movie Maker, I developed my skills and learned shortcuts. It is the most advance and technical software that gave my work an amazing finished look. I preferred using this because of it can perform great functions that give wonderful results. It helped me convert photos to black and white, resize them, create different effects, combine sophisticated techniques and many others. It allows to enhance the photos in one click.

HardwareInternet is one of the thing that is used the most in this entire project. Due to the presence of internet I was able to do all the related research and evaluate relevant information. Using an internet made my work so easier by transporting myself halfway around the world by sitting at one place. I could gather all I wanted to know about my genre in different places.Other than internet I have learned and used the system of Blogging. Before joining media and going through magazine links I never knew what it is. Slowly and gradually I discovered how to use it and started to post my assignments on Tumblr. For me blogging is something really interactive that makes student develops interest more and more. It includes of endless facilities-From changing the theme to font-to color-to positioning and what not. Blogging has been hugely beneficial in doing this for myself because I have seen the benefit of sitting down, writing, and reflecting on what I have learned while also learning to create an emotional connection to the information. It gives me the opportunity to learn from the comments and advice of others as well, which has helped me refine my own ideas.

FeedbackMy audience feedback was generally positive. My trailer was said to have shown the themes of the film without giving away the narrative as intended and my use of the camera shots were apparently good. The choice of the music could however been better. And the use of dialogues would be more prominent.

The products that were used in the film were said to look very professional and made it clear the type of the film it was. They seemed to be very excited to watch the movie because of suspense. The soundtrack made it clear that some crime is going to happen.

The audience feedback was very important as it is the audiences reaction to my product that decides whether or not it will be a success or not. By getting this feedback, I would be able to find out if the products would be effective in their primary purpose to engage the audience. It would also give me ideas for the things to change for future products or if it needed redoing.
