Ron Kibbey’s Comedy Classic
A Film Noir Spoof starring Bob Hope,
Dorothy Lamour, & Peter Lorre
Tuesday, February 18, 6 PM
February’s Comedy classic (whose
title we can’t tell you because it’s
not out of copyright) is a 1947
American romantic comedy film and
film noir parody, directed by Elliott
Nugent and starring Bob Hope and
Dorothy Lamour. The film is about a baby photographer on death
row in San Quentin State Prison who tells reporters his history. While
taking care of his private-eye neighbor's office, an irresistible
baroness asked him to find a missing baron. That initiated a series of
confusing but sinister events in a gloomy mansion and a private
sanatorium. Spoofing movie detectives and the film noir style, the
film features Lon Chaney, Jr. playing Willie, a character based on his
Of Mice and Men role Lennie; Peter Lorre as Kismet, a comic take
on his many film noir roles; and cameo appearances by film noir
regular Alan Ladd and Hope partner Bing Crosby. (https://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Favorite_Brunette)
Ron provides an intro to the movie and a swell classic cartoon before
the feature. Free popcorn and sodas, too. Free and open to the
public. Please register to attend.
Book Lunch:
Death of a Doxy, by Rex Stout
Thursday, February 20, Noon
Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin seek to clear Teer,
Orrie Cather, from a murder charge and collect a fifty
thousand dollar fee from a client who must remain nameless to the
public. A seemingly but not absolutely impossible task once they
enlist the help of the murder victim’s best friend, nightclub singer,
Julie Jacquette.
Thems that know say there are two kinds of readers: those who dig
plot and those who crave character. Death of a Doxy is Wolfe-sized
with both.
Books available at the circulation desk. You must register to attend
by Tuesday, February 18.
Sisters of Selma
Thursday, February 20, 6 PM
An unabashedly spiritual take on the Selma voting
rights marches of 1965 from some of its unsung foot
soldiers - Catholic nuns. Following "Bloody
Sunday," sisters from around the country answered Dr. King's call
to join the protests in Selma. Never before in American history had
avowed Catholic women made so public a political statement.
In 2003, director Jayasri Hart reunited the nuns to let them view the
protests on tape for the first time. His skillfully edited archival
footage documents the nuns' participation, offering an enthralling
you-are-there feeling. This important documentary is a compelling
testament to...putting one's faith into action. (www.amazon.com/
