We think sheis too young for a part-time job andfear that it will interfere with herschoolwork. She already gets$10/week allowance, but she saysshe wants to make more money tobuy clothes and go to the movieswith her friends. We sat her down fora family meeting the other nighthoping to resolve our differences.We tried to keep it calm, but therewas a lot of screaming and yelling.When she practically threatened tostart shoplifting, we decided to takeher concerns more seriously.We're wondering if a job is agood idea for such a youngteenager. At what age is itokay to let her go to work?

Cash: Obviously your family meet-ing didn't quite go as planned.Screaming and yelling never really helpany situation.

Carry: First, you should be proud thatyour daughter is asking to have a job andnot just an increase in allowance. It doesshow she has initiative, especially sinceshe's been reading the classified section.

Cash: It's never too early for her tolearn good working habits. Having apart-time job on the weekend has a lotof benefits such as teaching her to beon time, developing self-esteem andhaving a sense of responsibility.

Carry: Some adults have neededseveral jobs to figure all that out!

Cash: If you don't believe she isemotionally ready for a weekend job,there are other options you can try tocompromise with her. Consider offer-ing her a paid job around the house ormaybe she could work for a closeneighbor. That way she gets to makesome extra money, but you get to makesure her schedule doesn't interfere withher schoolwork.

Carry: Negotiating a compromisewith her on this situation will go a longway to developing your relationship.That will prove very helpful when sheturns 16 and wants her first car!

The District, Downtown BG presents the 4th Annual Second Saturdays Festival in Fountain Square Park in Bowling Green, Ky. These all-day events will be held every second Saturday of each month beginning on April 13, 2013.

The festivals in Fountain Square Park will start on Saturday mornings at 10:00am and will conclude at 5:00pm.

The Second Saturday Festivals will provide fun for all ages, musical entertainment, Fountain Square business specials, and a “Craftsman Village,” where vendors of every kind can sell their favorite merchandise.

Kentucky Proud - Homegrown By Heroes • Jobs for Vets This program is a partnership initiative between the Kentucky Department of Agriculture (KDA) and US A Cares, a Kentucky-based 501(c)(3) charitable organization providing financial and advocacy support to military members, veterans, and their families since 2003. KDA and USA Cares established this initiative to match veterans needing good jobs with Kentucky-based farmers and agribusinesses needing quality labor. Jobs may be full time, part time or seasonal. Farms and/or agribusinesses will be able to promote the fact that they hire veterans by displaying the distinctive decal created by the KDA. This logo will let prospective consumers know that the products were locally grown by a veteran. From the grocery shelf to the farmers’ market to on-line retail, this label will serve as an opportunity for consumers to remember and honor the service of our veterans. When Kentucky motorists renew their farm license plates, they can add a voluntary $10 donation that is split evenly among 4-H, FFA and Kentucky Proud. All three programs contribute to the future of Kentucky agriculture and Kentucky as a whole. Kentucky 4-H, Kentucky FFA, and Kentucky Proud each received $121,708.64 from voluntary donations made when Kentucky motorists renewed their farm license plates in 2012. Kentucky FFA has about 15,000 members. FFA is dedicated to developing students’ potential for personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Programs and activities help members develop public speaking skills, conduct meetings, manage financ es, and strengthen problem-solving skills. 4-H is a community of young people who are learning leadership, citizenship and lifeskills. The re are over 245,000 Kentucky 4-H members making 4-H the largest out-of-school youth program. Everyone ages nine to nineteen can particpate. Nathan Howell has been farming since the day he was born. He was born onto a real, hard workin’, wake up to feed the cows and break the ice on the pond farm in Hart County, Kentucky. He doesn’t remember a day when there wasn’t a job to be done alongside his dad on the farm. Michelle was raised across the country in California, but always had a desire to settle on a farm with a large family. After ten years of marriage, many hopes and dreams later, they are making plans to farm full time. Nathan and Michelle met twelve years ago while working for the University of

Kentucky, helping farmers transition from tobacco to fruit and vegetable production. Having a desire to raise their children on a farm, they began growing watermelon and heirloom tomatoes on two acres in Warren County. Those two acres named Need More Acres are now covered with a vineyard, high tunnel for year round farming, and chickens. Nathan is passionate about sharing his knowledge with others and a big component of what they do is education for beginning farmers — and consumers hoping to start a garden of their own. In 2011, the Howells partnered with

several farmers, volunteers and community partners to develop the Community Farmers Market at the WKU Center for Research & Development in Bowling Green. From the

beginning, the market has focused on community outreach and partnerships. In addition to accepting WIC, Senior Nutrition and EBT the market also provides opportunities for everyone through Third Thursday Farm Days, Folk Schools and special events throughout the year. They quickly learned that through education, support and community development, everyone in Southern Kentucky could benefit from eating more locally grown foods. Michelle’s involvement with the Community Health Plan affirmed that a relationship with local farmers could help lower cases of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. In response to the growing need, Nathan and Michelle are now offering a multi-farm Community Supported Agriculture program for a small number of families. To make eating new and interesting fruits and vegetables easier for busy families, Michelle has established a free e-course, Real Food Made Simple , on their website. They believe that more farmers and families will become involved with the CSA model in the future.
