THE MATCHUPSThe Concordia-St. Paul women’s basketball team opens up NSIC play this weekend as they travel to Augustana on Fri-day and then travel to Wayne State on Saturday.

LAST TIME OUTOver the weekend, Concordia won a pair of home games against Conocordia-Portland and Jamestown (N.D.) at the Radisson Hotel MSP North Classic.

On Friday, the Golden Bears struggled shooting from the fl oor but forced 25 turnovers and went 20-27 from the free-throw line to come away with a narrow 55-52 win.

On Saturday, the Golden Bears outscored Jamestown, 25-7 in the second quarter to help build a commanding lead and come away with a 82-61 win.

Anna Schmitt led the way in the two games as she averaged a team-best 14.5 points and fi ve assists while Mishayla Jones put up 12.0 points. Caitlyn Russell averaged nine points in the two games off the bench for CSP.

AU SERIES HISTORYThe Golden Bears meet the Vikings for the 24th time on the court as AU holds a 13-10 record in the 23 previous meet-ings. The Vikings have won the last three meetings between the two teams. CSP’s last win against Augustana came back on December 6, 2014 by a score of 78-77.

LAST MEETING VS AUBack on January 8th, AU claimed an 80-71 win in at the Gangelhoff Center.

CSP shot just 26.1% (6-23) in the fi rst and 22.2% (4-18) in the second before fi ring an effi cient 69.2% (9-13) in the third and 46.7% (7-15) in the fourth, but the fi rst half hole proved to be too much to overcome. Augustana knocked down 42.4% (25-59) on the night.

Anna Schmitt was once again in control of the offense as she collected her fi rst career double-double with 14 points and 11 assists to go along with fi ve rebounds on the night. The 11 assists represented a new career high and tied for 20th most in program history. Her mark was the most since Ameshia Kearney had 12 back on January 17, 2015.

Notes about Johnson’s coaching background:2012-13 to 2013-14 as a graduate assistant coach2014-15 as assistant coach2015-16 promoted to interim head coach after Christmas break2016-17 fi rst full season as head coach

Amanda Johnson was offi cially named the program’s ninth head basketball coach in April, 2016 after a successful stint as interim head coach in the second half of the 2015-16 season.

One of the top post players in Concordia basketball history, Johnson assumed the interim head coach position during win-ter break of the 2015-16 season and led the program to a 9-10 record highlighted by a 9-6 fi nish that included an NSIC Sanford Health Tournament fi rst round victory.

She’s completed her fourth year coaching in the program, spend-ing the fi rst two as a graduate assistant before a promotion to the top assistant position on staff for a year and a half.

Johnson returned to the Golden Bears in 2012-13 after a strong stint as a professional player in Australia. She returned to pursue a master’s degree in sport management and initially was tabbed with working with the post players. As a graduate assistant, the Golden Bears captured two NSIC Championships and an NCAA Central Region Championship with a trip to the Elite Eight during her fi rst two years on staff.

Concordia Playing CareerThe two-time All-Region performer led the Golden Bears to back-to-back NSIC regular season and tourna-ment championships and was two-time NSIC Player of the Year in the process. Johnson set the school single-season scoring record with 551 points as a junior in 2006-07 as she led the Golden Bears to the NCAA Central Region Championship game and the school’s second Sweet 16 run.

She averaged 16.8 points and 8.6 rebounds while shooting 52.4% from the fl oor and fi nished as Concordia’s seventh all-time leading scorer despite playing three years for the Golden Bears (2005-08).

She had a 30-point, 20-rebound performance in the 2006-07 region title game. Her 726 career rebounds rank second in Concordia’s Division II-era (1999-present), just 16 shy of the school record. She also scored 1,426 career points in 94 games, adding 112 steals and 81 blocked shots.

The St. Croix Lutheran High School graduate was a business and marketing major at Concordia as an un-dergraduate. She began her college career at Division I Winthrop University, playing in 27 games with three starts with a Big South Freshman of the Week award.

Coaching BeginningJohnson brings prior coaching experience to the Golden Bear huddle, working as an assistant coach at New Life Academy.

Professional Playing CareerAfter her Concordia playing career came to a close, Johnson pursued professional basketball in Australia, playing for the Ringwood Hawks where she was a 2010 Big V League MVP and helped the Hawks to a Victoria State Championship. She posted averages of 15.6 points and 14.3 rebounds most recently.

She had also worked at Freedom Mortgage in the Twin Cities between Australian seasons.

Amanda is married to men’s basketball assistant coach Eric Johnson and they currently reside in Hudson, Wis.

Assistant Coach notes:Ashley Ellis-Milan enters her third season at Concordia as the program’s top assistant in the 2016-17 season after spending her fi rst two years as a graduate assistant. She’s no stranger to campus as a St. Paul Central High School graduate before continuing her playing career just a few miles away at the University of Min-nesota.

After her career in the maroon and gold, she played professionally in Germany, Greece and a stint with the Minnesota Lynx. Ashley graduated from Minnesota with a degree in education and is pursuing a master’s in educational leadership at Concordia.

Sophie Kenney joined the Concordia women’s basketball coaching staff as a graduate assistant working with the guards for the 2016-17 season. Kenney was a standout at Augustana University, earning All-NSIC Second Team honors as a senior, also being named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team. She was also a three-time NSIC All-Academic student-athlete at AU where she was a business communications and English double-major.
