CCJ ONLINE AUCTION

In an effort to assist the Club’s vulnerable employees and caddies during these unprecedented times, The Country Club Johannesburg has launched a new initiative – The CCJ COVID-19 Online Auction.

This initiative endeavours to raise the necessary funds to assist our employees and caddies, who have been deeply affected during the nationwide lockdown in the fight against COVID-19.

Some items to look forward to include golf lesson, an at-home wine tasting experience, personal training lessons, and much more!

We thank all our generous sponsors who have helped us make this initiative possible by their thoughtful donations and welcome Members who wish to donate items for auction to do so by contacting [email protected].

During this time of uncertainty, it is our responsibility as a community to stand together and help the vulnerable, to provide them with comfort that they are not forgotten and that those who they live among are compassionate and most of all, grateful for their service.

SOUTHERN GROUND HORNBILL: BIRD OF THE YEAR 2020

Kruger National Park lists southern ground hornbills as one of their ‘Big Six’ bird species. However, their numbers have been declining, due in part to persecution, habitat destruction and other factors. They are listed as ‘Endangered’ but, thankfully, conservationists have been taking steps to turn this around. Ground Hornbills can be found in the southern regions of Africa, ranging from Kenya to South Africa. Within these regions, they inhabit both woodlands and savannas.Their nests are often found high in tree cavities. They have lifespans of 50–60 years and up to 70 in captivity. This makes them one of the world’s longest-lived birds, on par with albatrosses. A large bird (at 90 to 129 cm long), females weigh up to 4.6 kilograms, while the larger males weigh up to 6.2 kilograms. Wingspan can reach 1.8 m.

They do not reach sexual maturity until 4–6 years old and only begin breeding at around 10 years old. Ground hornbills are therefore very slow breeders: A pair produces just one brood of two chicks every nine years, only one of which survives. Immature birds within the social group work as ‘helpers’, caring for the single chick. Their sex can be identified by the colour of their throats, where the male’s is pure red and the female’s is a deep violet-blue.

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

CCJ takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously. There are ongoing initiatives for water conservation, energy saving and waste recycling to reduce the Club’s environmental footprint. There are safeguards in place to minimise our potential of polluting the natural environment. We monitor the latest environmental legislation and ensure the Club is legally compliant. However, one of our key objectives is to enhance biodiversity through the protection of indigenous fauna and flora on Club property. The outcome is environmental havens at both Auckland Park and Woodmead which can be enjoyed by members and their families for generations to come.

Members are required to carry their membership cards at all times, when at the Club. Member cards are not transferable. Guests may not make use of a member’s card. A Member needs to be present with their guests at all times.

Ground hornbills call together before dawn in a chorus of repeated low grunting notes that sound not unlike a distant lion. They amplify their calls by inflating the big, red, balloon-like wattle below their bill. Calls can be heard up to 3 kilometres away to defend their territories.

Small animals need to lie low when a party of ground hornbills is out foraging because they snap up anything from insects and lizards to small birds, rodents, tortoises and snakes as big as puff adders.

PICTURE PERFECT:Members are encouraged to submit their images of the southern ground hornbill to [email protected] and stand a chance to have your images featured in the next Environews!

GEO WALK:Kindly note that the Geo Walk ‘n Talk with Richard and Morris Viljoen on 31 May is cancelled. Should you like more information on the environment sub-section or its events kindly email Chelsea on [email protected]

COFFEE CRAZE:Creamy, frothy, delicious. The world has fallen in love with dalgona coffee and so have we. Along with banana bread and homemade pizza, dalgona coffee has become one of the hottest things to make during the coronavirus lockdown.

Best of all, the recipe is easy to prepare at home by yourself or with your kids. Also, it uses items you may already have on hand: instant coffee, sugar and milk.

First, measure out equal amounts of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. (Start with two tablespoons each, and scale up from there.) Then pour the ingredients into a bowl. The water needs to be hot or boiling to help the coffee and sugar dissolve. Then wisk away to form soft peaks and spoon over a glass of iced cold milk.

For a single serving, a minimum of two tablespoons of instant coffee and hot water works best. That being said, you absolutely do not need to add an equal amount of sugar, depending on your tastes. But you do need some sugar, to create the creamy whipped peaks effect.

CLUBCUB

As a family-orientated Club, CCJ works hard to provide events and activities that cater to every family member. The young ones are encouraged to participate in a variety of sporting disciplines, as well as fun events such as the camp-outs and family fun days.

The age at which children can qualify for CCJ membership is 12 years. We therefore launched a sub club exclusive to children aged 4-11yrs called CCJ Cubs. The objective of the CCJ Cubs programme is to give more structure and cohesion to the various activities andevents on offer to this age group. The cost is R200 once off fee. When the child turns 12 they will need to apply for full membership. If the Parents end their membership the Cub’s membership will also end. Cubs must have parents who are a Member.

Parents can register their children at either of the clubs reception desks. Their photograph will be taken for their exclusive CCJ Cub Card which will also carry their name and birthday.

Enquiries can be directed to the reception desks or Nikki Espley-Jones: [email protected] | 011 710 6406.

THE GOLF ELIXIR BY JOHN DICKSON:The word Elixir is a noun” Miraculous, magical, and maybe a little mysterious, an elixir is a sweet substance or solution that cures the problem at hand” So, in the golf swing we could all do with an Elixir to help us play better. We often look for this with better technique. Working on the fundamentals and basics of the golf swing. When golfers move poorly, they normally hit the ball offline. An Elixir for this could be getting a better posture. Posture is so important in setting the foundation to good body movement and even getting the correct sequence in the back and downswing.

A good Elixir could be just having the correct grip. A weak grip usually leads to lack of release and lack of release in turn leads to any amount of compensations in the golf swing. Players with a weak grip (if right-handed player) often hit the ball right of target with a slice or can also compensate by hitting big pulls. A strong grip can lead to the club face releasing to well and resulting in shots that can go left unless the body works well in the swing to compensate for the strong grip.

Another Elixir for the golf swing could be having the correct equipment. If your golf clubs do not fit, you well then you can definitely compensate with the swing to correct for clubs that are too long or short. Clubs that are too stiff or too soft in the shaft. Clubs that are too upright or too flat in lie angle. So many golfers often resort to the Elixir of buying equipment that helps them to a “better “game.

I feel the best Elixir is rhythm. Finding the right rhythm for your golf swing will do wonders for your game with whatever swing you have. Rhythm can make up for many swing faults as it really helps the golfer to get

everything working in sync. The golf swing is made up of a backswing and a down swing. The Transition from the backswing to the downswing is known as the transition. This is the hardest part of the golf swing to get right. When we are under pressure, we tend to rush this, and this invariably leads to poor shots and more tension as the round goes on.

So, I feel that finding a good rhythm to your golf swing is vital in playing better shots but also helping us be more relaxed when we do play under any pressure. A really good way to get better rhythm is to hit practice balls off a tee/peg at the height of a driver. Hang the seven or eight iron in the air and feel the forearms and shoulders nice and relaxed and try and feel a really good rhythm on the back swing that should lead to a good smooth transition into the down swing and then a better impact.

So, in the eternal search for better golf and all the Elixirs out there on you tube and the internet. Try to make your main one to be finding a good rhythm that suits you.
