The Trainees are in the final stages of their 2-year course and will be showing their training work as well as an exhibition of their jewellery.

The Pottery Skills Course invites you to an Open House on Tuesday 9 March 1999 in the Pottery Skills Course Workshop, Island Mill, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny from 10.00am - 4.00pm. The Trainees are in the final stages of their one-year course. They will be showing their training work as well as an exhibition of their pottery.

Letters to the Crafts Council Following the article in Bulletin 2 which featured the work of one of our NCAD Craft Design Metals graduates Natalie Delimata, who won the EBS Graduate Award at the RDS in 1998, I write to express my department's pleasure at seeing a recent graduate given such prominent coverage. However there are positives and negatives to many things in life and unfortunately as with this letter, the above mentioned article was no exception. Natalie was quoted as saying "that the students are not being made aware enough of the awards". Further to this it was stated that her involvement in the competition was a matter of chance. This seems an ideal opportunity to set the balance straight. The Craft Design Department regularly encourages its' stu­dents to participate in the awards. They are seen as a valuable promotional vehicle for the graduates and department alike. When one looks at the frequency of significant prizes going to our recent graduates, it becomes evident that chance plays no part in their involvement: Deirdre Rogers (1994), Eimear Conyard (1995), Melanie Downes (1997), Julie Anne Foley (1997) and Natalie Delimita (1998). Had the journalist or editor of the last issue taken every care in it's compilation as stated on the back of "Bulletin 2", then a good publication would not have been marred by inaccuracy.

"Si tous les ports du monde..." 18-22 August 1999 The Crafts and the Festival Dol de Bretagne has a tradition in mar­kets and a picturesque and very well preserved old town which is the town centre. The most important architec­tural feature of Dol is its magnificent cathedral with an Anglo-Normal style. A concert will take place in it during the festival. The paved streets can bring everybody's imagination back to the Middle Age. All these reasons lead us to organise a one-day Craft market nearby the cathedral. The French Committee proposals:

Advertising will be paid by the French committee; free stands for Irish and Scottish craftsmen; trips and hotels to be paid by the Irish and Scottish partici­pants. The area offers large possibilities of Bed and Breakfasts, camping, hotels and cottages. The prices depend on the type of accommodation. The rates will be negotiated for the festival; street entertainment will take place all day long in Dol de Bretagne; there is also the opportunity to sell products during all the festival in Spain Malo and in the Irish and Scottish village that will be installed in Pieurtult; for the firms that would like to meet some trade part­ners, the Saint-Malo Chamber of Commerce would arrange meetings with French firms.

Ceramic Resources Fair 13 - 15 July 1999 The renamed Ceramic Arts and Resources Fair will now include art dealers, art consultants, national ceram­ics groups and individual artists, wishing to exhibit and sell ceramic art at the Ceramic Millennium. Previously, the Fair only accepted exhibitors who dealt in equipment, materials, tools, services, books, film and other resources for the field. In order to keep a clear divide between art and resources, the Fair will be held on two floors.

"Celebrating Boxes" - Searching For Box Makers UK box makers Peter Lloyd and Andrew Crawford are organising a major international exhibition repre­senting the finest box-makers world­wide to tour the UK in the year 2001. The intention is that the show, to be entitled 'Celebrating Boxes', will be linked to a high quality book of the same name featuring all participants. This will be a wide ranging and exten­sive title that will have a relevance and value long after the end of the exhibi­tion.

The exact venues and dates are to be finalised. The show will originate at Carlisle's Tullie House in July 2001 and will initially include 6 or 8 galleries in the UK each running from 6 - 8 weeks and then hopefully on to tour Europe, US and Australia. Northern Fibre III - Hidden Treasures The Danish Arts and Crafts Association's textile group hereby invite textile artists to an international work­shop by the North sea. The theme will be Hidden Treasurers. The workshop will be held at Tuskaer Culture Center in northwestern Jutland, Denmark. Two guest artists, John Olsen from Denmark and Byongy Laky from USA will be giving introductory presenta­tions. The week's work will take its point of departure in the nature of the area and any materials that can be found there. In addition, participating artists will show slides of their own work. The workshop will be held between 27 August to 4 September 1999. In the following exhibition partic­ipants will show new works from the workshop together with earlier works at Textilforum in Herning from 4 September to 28 November 1999. Participants will be selected on the basis of submitted slides. Slides and applica­tion must be received by us no later than 10 March 1999. BOOKS Calling Architectural Glass Artists Architectural glass artists have been developing new techniques in the last few years. I am researching a book for A&C Black on how glass artists are using printmaking techniques on glass. Virtually every printmaking technique can be translated on to glass from pota­to prints to silkscreening enamels, colours, skins, sandblast prints and glass.
