A WHOLE LOT OF GARDEN HOSEA CAREER-BASED TASK

Designed to demonstrate the integration of the Common Core and Career and Technical Education knowledge and skills.

Realistic applications that combine mathematics and CTE content.

WHAT’S IMPORTANT IN UNIT 4?

Identifying and describing properties of two-dimensional shapes in more precise ways using properties that are shared rather than the appearances of individual shapes.

Partition shapes into equal shares of halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths.

Find the perimeter of objects (ex. Finding missing side lengths, different perimeters given fixed area)

Understanding difference between area and perimeter

IDENTIFYING SHAPES IN MORE PRECISE WAYS…WHAT DOES “MORE PRECISE” MEAN?

Each level describes the thinking process used in geometric context.

Information taken from: Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics, 2nd Edition written by John A. Van de Walle, et. al

Elementary Students are in Level 0-1

PARTITIONING SHAPES INTO EQUAL SHARES

Students are exploring region models other than the typical circle or rectangle

When partitioning a whole shape into parts, it is important to understand that the size of the parts must be equal, but the shape of the parts do not have to be the same.

DIFFERENTIATING BETWEEN AREA AND PERIMETER

Van de Walle states that students struggle with knowing the difference between perimeter and area. The perimeter tasks in this unit are designed to help students discover this difference by connecting perimeter of polygons to measurement.

The Relationship between Area and Perimeter

IN MY CLASSROOM…

AREAS OF CONCERN

Students should classify shapes by attributes and by drawing shapes that fit specific categories.

Students should be able to develop a conceptual understanding of perimeter. Students who develop this understanding will be less likely to confuse area and perimeter.
