Shipbuilding leaders like Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems employ thousands of trade specialists, from welders, electricians

and machinists to high-tech workers who create and maintain complex electronics and computer systems. There are medium-sized and smaller shipyards clustered about the region as well, along with independent businesses that supply subcontracting and vendor support – all dependent on skilled tradesmen.

In addition to being sought by private industry and government contractors, local tradesmen are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to protecting the environment while also enjoying an excellent compensation package.

One of the issues confronting businesses that rely on skilled trades is an aging workforce. The fi rst of the baby boomers have already hit retirement age, with an even larger number waiting to exit behind them.

In order to replace the crucial skills they provide, many employers have created apprenticeship programs.

BAE Systems, in partnership with Tidewater Community College, has developed one of the best in the region. Their four-year program offers on-the-job training and college credit towards an Associate’s degree. Trades include shipfi tter, welder, inside machinist, outside machinist, electrician, pipefi tter, sheetmetal, painter, carpenter, insulator and rigger. New classes start in August.
