Section C — Literature 40 marks
General Instructions :
(i) All the questions are compulsory.
(ii) You may attempt any section at a time.
(iii) All questions of that particular section must be attempted in the
correct order.
SECTION A (Reading)
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that
follow: 10
Space Tourism
1 Space tourism is the term used to describe space travel for
recreational or leisure purposes. What was once only a
dream — described in books such as Arthur C. Clarke’s
2001: A Space Odyssey — is now becoming a reality.
2 Futurologists are scientists who attempt to make
predictions of what life will be like in the future. After the
first man landed on the moon in 1969, they thought that
hotels would be built on the moon by the year 2000.
Futurologists also considered the possibility that, in the
21st century, families might go for a holiday on the moon.
Neither of these predictions have come true yet — but the
rapid development of technology may mean these
predictions are a possibility in the years to come.
3 Space Adventures is currently the only company to have
succeeded in sending paying passengers into space. Space
Adventures worked with the Federal Space Agency of the
Russian Federation and Rocket and Space Corporation
Energia to facilitate flights for the world’s first private
space explorers. Each person paid over $20 million for
their 10-day trip to the International Space Station.
4 The first space tourist, in April 2001, was American
businessman Dennis Tito. He was followed almost exactly
a year later by South African businessman Mark Shuttle;
by another American businessman Greg Olsen in October
2005; by the first female space tourist, an Iranian-
American engineer Anousheh Ansari in September 2006;
and by a Hungarian-American software architect, Dr.
Charles Simonyi, in April 2007.
5 Following several successful explorations into space,
several companies are now considering the possibility of
enabling tourists to visit space. At present, spaceports are
being constructed in numerous locations in the USA, as
well as in Sweden and the United Arab Emirates.
6 In order to make it more affordable, suborbital space
travel is being considered by many companies, including
Virgin Galactic. Passengers would be transported to a
height of between 100 and 160 km above the Earth,
experience 3 – 6 minutes of weightlessness and a view of
the stars before being taken back down to Earth. This is
expected to cost around $200,000 per person.
7 Whilst it could be an enriching experience, there are some
disadvantages to space tourism. While it is all set to
progress by leaps and bounds over the next few decades,
not everyone takes kindly to it. Many critics have
commented that a huge growth in the spaceflight industry
could drastically speed up the process of global warming.
The ozone layer would be damaged further and the polar
regions would suffer. In addition, space travel is only
really a possibility for the super-rich. Although Virgin
Galactic claims to be ‘opening space to the rest of us’,
there are still millions of people worldwide who wouldn’t
be able to afford it.
1.1 On the basis of your understanding of the above passage,

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that
follow: 10
1 High blood pressure, or hypertension, occurs when your
blood pressure increases to unhealthy levels. Your blood
pressure measurement takes into account how much blood
is passing through your blood vessels and the amount of
resistance the blood meets while the heart is pumping.
Narrow arteries increase resistance. The narrower your
arteries are, the higher your blood pressure will be. Over
the long term, increased pressure can cause health issues,
including heart disease. Hypertension is quite common.
2 Hypertension is generally a silent condition. Even then,
these symptoms may be attributed to other issues.
Symptoms of severe hypertension can include headache,
shortness of breath, nosebleeds, chest pain, dizziness, etc.
They don’t occur in everyone with hypertension, but
waiting for a symptom of this condition to appear could be
fatal. For example, if you have a family history of heart
disease or have risk factors for developing the condition,
your doctor may recommend that you have your blood
pressure checked twice a year. This helps you and your
doctor stay on top of any possible issues before they
become problematic.
3 Hypertension is of two types — primary and secondary
hypertension. Primary hypertension is also called essential
hypertension which develops over time with no
identifiable cause. Most people have this type of high
blood pressure. The factors which play a major role
include genes, physical changes and environment.
Secondary hypertension often occurs quickly and can
become more severe than primary hypertension. Several
conditions that may cause secondary hypertension include
side effects of medications, consumption of some drugs
and alcohol, adrenal gland problems, etc.
4 Diagnosing hypertension is as simple as taking a blood
pressure reading. Most doctors’ offices check blood
pressure as part of a routine visit. If your blood pressure is
elevated, your doctor may request you to have more
readings over the course of a few days or weeks. That’s
because your environment can contribute to increased
blood pressure, such as the stress you may feel by being at
the doctor’s office. If your blood pressure remains high,
your doctor will likely conduct more tests to rule out
underlying conditions. These tests can include urine test,
cholesterol screening and other blood tests, ECG
(electrocardiogram) test and ultrasound of your heart and
kidney. These tests can help your doctor identify any
secondary issues causing your elevated blood pressure.
They can also look at the effects high blood pressure may
have had on your organs. During this time, your doctor
may begin treating your hypertension. Early treatment
may reduce your risk of lasting damage.
5 Complications of the hypertension may result in
damaging of arteries, heart (cardiac arrest, heart
failure, arrhythmias, etc.) and brain.
6 Healthy lifestyle changes can help you control the
factors that cause hypertension. A heart-healthy diet
is vital for helping to reduce high blood pressure.
It’s also important for managing hypertension that is
under control and reducing the risk of
complications. A heart-healthy diet emphasizes
foods that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains
and lean sources of proteins, also reducing dietary
sodium, eating more veggies and cut back on
sweets. Reaching a healthy weight should include
being physically more active. In addition, exercise
can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure
naturally, and strengthen your cardiovascular
system. Other activities can also be helpful. These
include meditation, deep breathing, and yoga or tai
chi. These are all proven stress-reducing techniques.
Getting adequate sleep can also help reduce stress
levels.
(a) On the basis of your reading of the above passage,
make notes on it using recognizable abbreviations

Subject: Public Processions Heading Towards a Wrong
Direction
Sir/Ma’am,
It is my earnest privilege to inform you that there are certain
issues which occur during events like marathons, promoting
‘Go Green’, ‘Save Girl Child’, etc. these days. It is very
encouraging that awareness programmes on social and health
issues are promoted regularly, yet I am also despondent
towards how these events are being diluted from the actual
cause.
Events these days have become a platform for celebrities to
attract more crowds. Celebrities and other well-known figures
attract large crowds but I think the crowd does not actually
come to support the event. Rather the crowds come to these
events to get a glimpse of the celebrities. At the same time,
media hypes such events when celebrities show support. The
media does not actually focus on the actual cause but instead
gives more attention to the celebrities.
This causes inconvenience to those people who actually come
for the real cause. Most of the time, the crowds would create
havoc and would congest the whole area where the events take
place.
Therefore, I humbly request you to publish and address these
issues in your esteemed newspaper so that the real purpose of
such events would remain intact and the real cause gets due
importance. Thank You.
Yours sincerely,
Bharti

The Growth in Cyber Crime
In this technology driven society, the internet has become a
useful resource for everyone and offers many helpful
opportunities. With the introduction of new technologies and
devices including smart phones/tablets and innovative
applications, the usage of internet has increased tremendously.
However, there is also an increasing pool of cyber crimes
related with such developments. Cyber crime involves criminal
activities that occur over internet through computers and digital
devices. They can be in terms of fraud, malwares such as
viruses, identity theft, stalking, etc. Every year, huge amount of
money is being looted through internet theft. Apart from that,
cyber bullying, harassment, and violation of privacy are also
increasing rapidly every day. Anyone can be a victim of cyber
crime. It does not concentrate only to internet theft. Therefore,
we must take certain precautions while using internet. Firstly,
one must never give their information to any party on the
internet. Secondly, one must use strong and secured passwords
for internet accounts. Thirdly, always update your personal
devices and computers regularly. One of the best ways to avoid
hacking is to consistently update your devices with anti-
viruses. Lastly, one must always be vigilant while using social
media platforms. Many cases of cyber bullying and harassment
occur in social media platforms.
If you can simply follow these steps, then you can protect
yourself from cyber attacks and avoid becoming a cyber attack
victim.

Cleanliness is next to Godliness
By Manas/Manasi
‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’, this proverb expresses a lot
to us. It indicates that cleanliness is one of the most important
and essential part of a healthy life. It is a very good habit and
leads us towards goodness in every way of our life by keeping
our body, mind and soul clean and calm. Cleanliness is not just
keeping yourself clean but also to keep yourself both
physically and mentally clean by maintaining proper personal
hygiene and bringing positive thoughts.
Nowadays, a campaign called ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan’ has
been started by the Indian Prime Minister, in order to maintain
cleanliness in surroundings and to make India a cleaner
country. Prime Minister himself has praised the efforts by
people and various organisations for being a part of this
campaign. Various campaigns have been initiated through
Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan for cleanliness drive in the country to
highlight the cleanliness work carried out by the citizens.
Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan received tremendous support from
the people and citizens have turned out in large numbers and
pledged for a cleaner India. People have started to take part in
such cleanliness campaigns and cleanliness drives and are
helping in spreading the message of ‘Cleanliness is next to
Godliness’.

The Importance of Newspaper
By Raj/Raji
Newspaper is one of the oldest and the most powerful tool in
circulating information among the masses. We get vast
information through newspapers and it has also become a
common ground between the people and the world. It has an
important role in shaping public opinion and raising awareness
about social and public issues. In fact, it is believed that the
information provided in the newspaper is authentic, objective
and reliable. It has a very powerful impact on the readers and
can certainly change the course of social, political and
economic lives of the people.
In this regard, newspaper editors and journalists should be very
rational and cautious in their publications. Any misinformation
posted and published in newspapers has the tendency to create
chaos in the society. The journalists as well as the editors
should make sure that the information portrayed in the
newspapers is true and legit. They should not be biased
towards certain issues nor should have any personal affiliations
with any party. Misinformation circulated among newspapers
has given rise to many confusing instances in the past. And it
will certainly create confusion in the future if it is not genuine
or appropriate.
Therefore, it is very important for editors and journalists to be
cautious and unbiased towards any publication or information
in their newspaper.

Shreya: Sir, what are the threats to tigers?
Dr Ansari: One of the major threats to tigers is urbanization.
Increase in population has led people to encroach forest
areas. Also, activities of poaching are still prevalent in almost
every society.
Shreya: How do you propose to save them?
Dr Ansari: In order to protect the tigers we have to protect
their natural habitats. They should also be safeguarded from
poachers.
Shreya: So, what do you think is a common man’s role in
saving tigers?
Dr Ansari: A common man can create awareness about
protecting tigers. They should also discourage products that
are made from tigers’ skin and their body parts.

(v) The poem is ‘Ode to Autumn’ by John Keats.

(i) Herbert didn’t believe in the story at first. He tried to stop his
parents from using it. But his parents were interested. When
they rescued the paw from the fire and Mr. White was wishing
on it, Herbert made jokes. He suggested his father to wish for
him to be an emperor. After everyone went to bed, Herbert was
disturbed when he saw the face of monkey in the fire.
It was ironic that Herbert was the one who saw the images
because he was the one who suffered the most from the paw.
He was suspicious from the beginning. It also caused his death.
(ii) Roger was talking about the message which was written on a
piece of paper. Being too pompous and self-important, Lord
Weston took this message as a warning for him by someone
who was planning to murder him. It was also the 15th of March,
the day of Julius Caesar’s assassination. And he being a judge
with so many enemies, he became skeptical about the warning.
All these circumstances strengthened Weston’s suspicions and
he orders his assistant Roger to close all the doors.
(iii) The fakir put the spell on the paw because he wanted people
to realize that fate ruled people’s lives and anyone who tries to
tamper with it has to pay a big price. According to the fakir,
everyone on this earth comes with a destiny pre-written and
nobody can change it.
The fakir had witnessed the greed and the need for more that
this world indulged into, which led people to cause hindrances
in their own destiny. He wanted to give punishment to such
people for interfering with fate and to make them realize that
the fate rests above all.

(i) Rakesh was a devoted son for his father and he also shows
great tenderness towards his mother. Even though Rakesh
studied in America, he did not bring any foreign bride to his
parent’s home.
Rakesh fulfilled all the expectations of his parents. After his
father had a health problem, Rakesh began to exert stricter
control over his father’s health. As a result, his father’s quality
of life decreased. In the end, Rakesh had to double the
medicine for his father as his father began to contract actual
disease. Rakesh was a devoted son throughout, but his
devotion blinded him to his father’s actual needs.
(ii) Pandit Nehru says that the past cannot be viewed by the
present standards because things were very different back then.
If we are to look into the past in the context of present
standards, it should be looked upon with sympathy and with
understanding. Our present morality and past morality are
completely different. Human civilization keeps on changing
every day. To understand a person who lived long ago, you
will have to understand his environment, the conditions under
which he lived, the ideas that filled his mind. We cannot judge
the past with our present standard. People had limited choice,
rights and resources. Therefore, if we are to look into the past,
we should look upon past history with the eye of sympathy
because the same human virtues and human failures that we
disregard have also made the present day that we live.
(iii) Einstein said that recognition and ambition are the major
factors that determine the success of an individual. He said that
desire for truth and understanding is an important element for
learning. It is a child’s inborn aptitude to be curious from a
very young age. Desire for approval and recognition is
believed to be a healthy motive. However, the desire to be
acknowledged as better, stronger and more intelligent than
others may be destructive. It may lead to excessively egoistic
attitude which may become a hindrance for the individual as
well as for the community.
(iv) According to the beggar, a dream is something that an
individual wants the most in his/her life. It is something that an
individual would work upon all the time until it is achieved. It
is simply the essence of moving forward and discarding every
hurdle that comes along the way.
The beggar’s final advice to the boy was that he should follow
his own dreams rather than following someone’s dream. And
in that process, he should also keep in mind not to take away
another person’s dream or happiness.

(i) The winner must distinguish himself in a solemn part in ‘The
Judgement of Paris’ in order to win Suzanne’s hand in
marriage. Robichon and Quinquart were actors who had to
compete with each other on the stage.
Quinquart had planned a crafty plot from the start to give the
biggest shock to his rival, Robichon. Quinquart was, in fact,
Jacques Roux who came to meet Robichon before the show.
He pretended to be Jacques, an ex-executioner and inspired
Robichon to play as him on the stage. After Robichon agreed
to play as Jacques, who regretted his past life and advocated
that capital punishment was a crime against humanity, he
started to impress the audience as well as Suzzane with his
tactful monologues. However, this was all planned beforehand
by Quinquart. Then Quinquart enters as Marguis, an old judge
who invites Jacques for dinner. After serving Jacques a glass
of wine, he informs Jacques that he had poisoned the wine to
avenge his son’s execution carried out by Jacques. The whole
plot turns around and Quinquart later brings an end to this
drama by revealing his identity.
(ii) During childhood children experience the world around them
as a kind and happy place. Generally children are not treated
harshly so they believe that the world is kind. Children are
usually surrounded with happiness, laughter and playful
activities most of their time. Herbert says that all of our
happiness originates from the nature, like in the summer fields
surrounded by the noises from the insects and birds. However,
the author deviates the ending from childhood’s happy
memories to the harsh realities of adulthood. He says that once
an individual becomes an adult, he/she becomes restricted to
certain directions. They no longer get to enjoy the nature’s
sounds as they become subjected to work and obligations like
a machine. The modern world has become a task for every
individual to solve. In such a surrounding, the hum of insects
sounds like a run-down machine that needs oiling and the
insects that create that sound appear like stabbing creatures
that make irritating noises.
(iii) Anne’s deep love and concern towards Marian made her
over-protective towards Marian. Anne very well knew her
daughter’s disabilities, so she always tried to protect her from
the outside world. Whenever she would let Marian play with
the other children, Marian would often come home as soon as
she could, depressed with shoulders down expressing a despair
which really hurt Anne. So she didn’t want Marian to play
with other children. Although Anne is a loving mother, her
over sensitivity had done a large amount of damage to
Marian’s development. If only Anne would have introduced
Marian to other children like she did to Freda, Marian would
have felt better about being deaf and dumb.

(i) Silas Marner was a man of good nature who lived in the
industrial town of Lantern Yard. He was a handloom weaver
by profession. Marner had many friends and he almost knew
everyone in the town. He also gave most of his earnings to
charity and church. He was a very religious and faithful
person. When Silas suffered from cataleptic fits, William, his
best friend accused him of being possessed by Satan. From
then on Silas’ life headed towards a different direction. He was
falsely accused of stealing from his church. People started to
look at him with disgust and anger. These circumstances
forced him to move to Raveloe leaving behind everything in
Lantern Yard. When William Dane blamed Silas for theft,
Silas also lost respect for his community as well as his own
honest faith in humanity. He inhibited bitter feelings towards
everyone from the town. Then in disgust, he left his village and
settled down in a far-off village called Raveloe.
(ii) True happiness doesn’t lie in possession of materialistic
things. When we look into Silas and Cass characters, both of
them were materialistic. Silas hoarded money and loved gold
more than anything after his dreadful experience in Lantern
Yard. Cass, on the other hand, was selfish and complacent
because of his excessive wealth and richness. Both of them
exhibited the same qualities of selfishness and materialistic.
However, both Silas and Cass learn that wealth and worldly
possessions have no value when compared to living a dignified
life. Silas learns that Eppie mattered to him more than gold or
money. He starts to love her as his own daughter and gives up
his old ways completely for her sake. Cass also learns to love
his own children and family more than his wealth. Both Silas
and Cass completely change when they finally understand the
real value of human relationship.
(iii) In the novel “The Invisible Man’, Griffin and his scientific
discovery, the discovery of making bodies invisible creates
great havoc to the humanity because of his selfish motives. His
discovery had the potential to change the society completely if
it could have been used for a good purpose. But instead of
sharing the secret of his discovery, he makes himself invisible
to satisfy his own ego and selfish needs. Science can be a
mystery to the common man who is not a scientist as he cannot
understand it. It can do so much harm if it is used for self-
interested motives. We see in the novel that Griffin tries to
terrorise people and harm his enemies with his power of
invisibility. However, his invisibility was not understood by
the people who apprehended him finally. They attacked him
mercilessly as they could not see him. This aggravated his
already isolated and lonely state. In fact, it leads him to his
death. Thus, science in the wrong hands is like a weapon that
can cause destruction to oneself as well as to the whole human
race.
(iv) Though Dr Kemp seems a much more likeable character as
the protagonist, Griffin is actually the real protagonist in H.G
Wells’ novel, ‘The Invisible Man’. Despite his negative
character, the whole plot of the novel revolves around Griffin
which also ultimately leads to his death. All the developments
that occurred in the novel revolve around Griffin after his
discovery of invisibility. It talks about Griffin’s journey after
becoming invisible and how he misused his ability. Griffin had
selfish motives and plans to cause harm to others. He was also
indirectly responsible for his father’s death. However, nothing
affects his evil intentions until he becomes bored and lonely of
not being able to be seen by others. The narrator also gives us
an insight of Griffin’s regret and remorse at the end of the
story. Finally, only when the crowd kills him, his invisibility
disappears, making him visible again. All these developments
and incidences in the story signify why Griffin is the real
protagonist of the story.
