foradevelopingcountrylikeIndia’.
WeallareawarethatIndiaisdevelopingitseconomyfasterthananyothercountryin
theworldbytakingadvantageofits‘demographicdividend’.Theterm‘demographic
dividend’referstothefreeingupofresourcesforacountry’seconomicdevelopment,
whenitswitchesfromanagrariantoanindustrialeconomy.Itwouldn'tbeasurprise
ifthislasted20to30years.Intheinitialstagesofthistransition,fertilityratesfall,
leadingtoalabourforcethatistemporarilygrowingfasterthanthepopulation
dependentonit.Duringthistime,percapitaincomegrowsmorerapidly,giventhat
allelseisequal.ManypeoplemigratetoabroadfromIndiaforbetterprospectsandin
India,agrowinglabourforceprovidesadequatereplacements.Infact,thisso-called
‘braindrain’improvesthechancesofcompetencyamongthepeoplelooking

Braindrainisdefinedasthemigrationofthecompetentpeopleofacountryi.e.
theintellectualsandtheskilledworkerstoanothercountry.Themigrationcouldbe
duetoseveralreasonsincludingthedesireofabetterlivingstandardandqualityof
life,highersalaries,accesstoadvancedtechnologyandmorestablepolitical
conditionsetc.
Usually,theintellectualsandtheskilledworkersofacountrymigrateasaresultof
theirdissatisfactionfromthecurrentopportunitiesandlifethattheyprevail.The
migrationofsuchpeopletranslatesintoabiglossofconsiderableresourcestotheir
owncountry.However,therecipientcountriesgetmajoradvantagesdespitenot
havingspentanymoneyontheireducationorlife.Thesemigrantsaresomeofthe

disobedience,whichhadtriumphedforthefirsttime,couldgoalongwayinthe
freedomstruggle.Gandhiji,throughhisway,wassuccessfulinteachingthecommon
peopleofIndiaalessoninself-reliance.Ultimately,self-reliance,Indianindependence
andhelptosharecropperswereallboundtogether.

Gandhijimadethepeoplerealisetheirownrights,strengthsandtheneedtobeself-
dependent.HeunitedthecommonpeopleofIndiaandtaughtthemtheimportanceof
non-cooperationandnon-violence.HetriedtomouldanewfreeIndianwhocould
standonhisownfeetandthusmakeIndiafree.Allthisshowedhisloveand
concernforthecommonpeopleofIndia.
10. TheDewanhadbroughtatigerfromthePeople’sParkinMadrasandkeptithidden
inhishouse.TheMaharajacalledDewanandaskedhimtosearchthetigerassoonas
possibleotherwisesearchanotherjob.Maharajaevensaidthathewouldexemptthe
landtaxforthreeyearsifanyoneinformedhimofatiger.WhentheMaharaja
threatenedhimofdireconsequences,heunderstoodthattheonlywaytosavehim
wasto‘plant’atigerfortheMaharajatokill.
So,heandhisagedwifedraggedthetigertotheforestwherethekingwashunting.
TheyleftthetigerintheforestandinformedtheKingaboutthesame.Thekingtook
aimandthebeastsooncollapsed.

BamaandZitkala-Sabelongedtodifferentcultures.Butbothhadexperienced
oppressionanddiscriminationintheirchildhood.Bamawasborninalower-class
familyandwasupsettoseethehumiliationssufferedbythemembersofher
communityduetountouchability.Theyweremadetoliveapart,runerrandsand
bowhumblytopeopleoftheuppercastes.Ontheotherhand,Zitkala-Sawasavictim
ofracialdiscriminationandsevereprejudicethatprevailedagainstthenative
Americans.Intheboardingschool,Zitkala-Sawashumiliatedandherblanketwas
forciblytakenoffhershoulders.Atthesametime,theforcedcuttingofherlonghair
alsomadeherfeellikeadefeatedwarrior,forinherculture,shorthairwereonly
wornbymourners.Thus,bothBamaandZitkala-Sahadtosufferhardasyoung
membersofmarginalizedcommunities.
Thecommonalitybetweenthemwasthattheybothwereexploitedintheir
communitiesandbothworkedhardagainstexploitation,depression,untouchability
andracialdiscrimination.Attheendbothofthemgotthedesiredresultsandtheir
voicerecognizedagainstthesocialevils.
