During the High Holidays, I gave a sermon in which I spoke about the dire needfor moral management (cf. anger management) in our society. After enumeratingthe numerous cases of public figures charged with all kinds of corruption andbehaving in a host of unethical ways, I suggested such things as: • Restore Jewish guilt (not the Portnoy twisted type, but the old-fashioned“shanda” = shame kind, which says there is right and wrong).

• Recognize the Divine Image in others.• Embrace a source of moral authority outside of our “sovereign selves,” such asGod and the Torah.

I mentioned a series of books which I promised to list in my bulletin column. Here are a few – a short list to get you started:• Book of Jewish Values by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin• A Code of Jewish Ethics, Vol. 1 & 2 by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin• The Jewish Moral Virtues by Eugene B. Borowitz & Frances Weinman

Schwartz• The Torah: Etz Hayim, Torah & Commentary – Book in Kamensky Sanctuary

seat pockets• Ethics of the Father: from the Talmud, numerous editions• The Genesis of Justice by Alan M. Dershowitz

Cantor Steve

Cantor’sNotes

“Cantor, I am not a very religious person”. I have heard this “confession” very often inmy years here at CBS. Most often these words, expressed to me during a consultation, arean effort to explain why a family is or is not going to be sitting shivah for a traditional 7 days,or why a wedding is going to take place preceding the end of Shabbat. The word ‘religious’is often confused with ‘observant’ as one identifies it with our Conservative standards forbehavior. Religion is all about relationships not only dutifully following the letter of the written or

oral laws of our tradition. On one website I found the definition of religion as a “committedrelationship to God”. But it is about community as well. As noted in his book, Ron Wolfsoncoins the phrase of “Relational Judaism”. Wolfson offers that we need relationships. “Notjust passing acquaintances, but lifelong relationships that can develop within communitiesand that will lift us up and beyond our own individualism. Relationships based on listeningto one another’s needs and on shared experience, and through commitments to work side byside and to join together in prayer. Relationships that require face-to-face encounters”.(Rabbi Wolkin offered his perspective on this issue last high holidays). Whether one observes as did their grandparents, or earlier generations of Eastern

European families, is not as vital as how one is finding meaning in their own observancetoday. We are not to uphold the exactness of our ancestors’ ways, but rather, I feel, theessence of it. The word has changed so dramatically from earlier days that it implausible tomaintain the same lifestyle of the shtetl. Do we offer ritual sacrifice as did our ancestors? No.Dennis Prager pens an article about “A Common Sense Approach to Jewish Observance” inwhich he states that Judaism is ‘not an all or nothing’ enterprise. That mentality keeps manypeople from attempting to incrementally grow their Judaism. Some is better than none. Susan and I were enjoying a Shabbat in a hotel a couple of months ago, guests of a

congregation member as I awaited the end of Shabbat so that I could conduct the weddingceremony of a beautiful young couple. As we sat in the hotel restaurant another familygathered, 12 or so individuals, to celebrate an elder’s 85th birthday. To our surprise theybegan their dinner by having the manager bring them two candles so they could say thebrachot and begin Shabbat together. Was it a kosher meal? No. Did they likely drive there?Yes. Were they wearing kippot? No. But they were doing something. They were maintainingfamily and relationships, with one another and God. Susan and I were delighted andadditionally so when they recited the bracha for candles on Yom Tov. It wasn’t Yom Tovbut then we overheard one person say, “well it is a holiday, it is Grandma’s birthday”. Werethey traditionally right in doing so? No, but how glorious it was. They were holding onto theessence of their Judaism and blessing their occasion within the boundaries of tradition.Would I define them as “religious Jews”, not likely but if religion is about relationship, between ourselves and in this instance God as well, then I need to change my answer to yes. I am not proposing watering down Jewish observance to that which “feels good” because

much of what we do is predicated on law and a history of practice which serves to bind usas a people. Once I heard a person say to a mourner who was questioning what she was todo during Shivah, and the friend said, “Anything that makes you feel good, isn’t that rightCantor”? I responded with a gentle, “no, that’s not what one does.” (I did continue to sit andexplain the issues to the mourner). The bottom line is to revel in your faith and observance. Strive to move beyond your

comfort zone, as being stagnant in your spiritual evolution is not healthy. Take pride in youridentity as it pertains to your Judaism and continue to build those relationships, horizontaland vertical, (as we term bein adam l’chavero and bein adam l’Makom), that you share withothers and with God. Then you shall surely be able to call yourself a religious Jew.

ALLTHATGLITTERSHARVEY R. GOLD, FSAExecutive Director

(This essay is usually attributed to George Carlin and there aremany different versions that have gone from in box to in box over theyears. The original was created by Lori Borgman in March of 1998)

An Obituary printed in the London Times Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common

Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for surehow old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost inbureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivatedsuch valuable lessons as:

- Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don'tspend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was

gone. *********************

We’ve had our share of winter weather sofar this year, with the snow and coldoccupying many of the headlines. But if youneed a warm and safe place to hang out, don’tforget about Beth Shalom. Not only is ourfacility kept up to date by our ExecutiveDirector (more to come on him in the comingmonths) and his staff, but our housecommittee, led by (see below) always makessure that CBS is ready for all of us. And whileyou are out of the elements at CBS, there is

plenty to do. There are opportunities for learning, meeting newpeople, hearing exciting speakers and enhancing your religious self. The great thing is that there is something going on every day at CBS.So check out the possibilities, they are endless. Go to the website atwww.bethshalomnb.org, look in this monthly bulletin or you caneven call the office. We have real live people who will take your calland answer your questions. In the age of robo-calls, voicemail andemail, we still have a wonderful, hospitable group of people who arethere to help you. Give it a try and get out of the nasty winterweather.

Meet yourExecutive BoardThe gentleman I was referring to

above is our longtime member, NeilRosengard. Serving in his second year asHouse Vice-President, Neil’s parentsjoined CBS in 1974, when he was atoddler. He learned the building while walking around with his fatherand exploring it in his youth. When Neil married Robyn almost 13years ago, they joined CBS as a newly married couple. Robyn hasbecome very involved in our Sisterhood, having served in manyBoard positions. Their high school rivalry, Trojans vs. Warriors, hashad to subside as their two children will be Spartans. Neil received his Political Science degree from the University of

Kansas but finds more joy in planning parties than debating issues. He is employed by BBJ Linens in Skokie and you may find himworking at a B’nai Mitzvah or wedding that you are attending, making sure that the event comes off exactly as planned. This is Neil’s first position on our Executive Board and we look

forward to having his outgoing personality on future boards for manyyears to come.

ROSH CHODESH

The Rosh Chodesh group—a small group of women who havebeen meeting monthly to study, now in its 12th year—in an effortto expand our knowledge beyond the traditional areas, reachedout last year to the Islamic Cultural Center (ICC) requesting a tourof their building and to meet with some representatives to learnabout life as Moslem women in Northbrook. In May, we werewarmly received by a group of lovely, well-educated women whogave us a brief tour of their building and had us observe a prayerservice. Interestingly, there were no prayerbooks, but a well-choreographed recitation of memorized verses from the Koran. The Imam gave a sermon prepared specifically for us. Near theentry to the sparsely filled prayer room was a donation box whichthey referred to as tzedakah!! Following the service, we wereinvited to enjoy home-made pastries and lively conversation. Itwas a wonderful afternoon and we vowed to meet again with ournew friends. We reciprocated in November when we hosted them at Beth

Shalom. After singing Hinei Ma Tov to welcome them, we did aHavdallah service enhanced by both translations and additionalreadings in which they could participate. Following a tour of ourfacilities, including opening a Torah scroll for them to see, wealso provided nosh and an opportunity to answer their questionsand continue the discussion of our various beliefs and traditionswhich began last spring. It was amazing how many times onegroup would describe a custom and the other would say, “We dothat too!” Both groups thoroughly enjoyed the exchange and weagreed that we would get together again. The main take-away is that we have far more in common than

there are differences.

Helping Hands 2013We collected over 120 toys this past holiday season, and they were

donated on our behalf to JCFS and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago. I’dlike to thank everyone who contributed to this collection by either bringingnew toys in to CBS or donating tzedakah at the November BOT meeting(tzedakah was used to purchase additional toys). I would also like to thankJill Olefsky for running this project once again, and for delivering the toys tothe local charities. CBS made a lot of children a little bit happier in 2013!

I am so excited that February is finally upon us. This year, I havebeen given the honor of staffing the Ta’am Yisrael trip; a trip whichsends nearly 200 8th grade students from the Chicago area on an 8 daytrip to Israel. Our congregation is known for having one of the largerdelegations over the past few years. I have had the pleasure of visitingIsrael on 6 different trips in the past, in addition to living there for ayear, but I have never had the opportunity to see how Israel is viewedthrough the eyes of a post bar/bat mitzvah child, seeing all the sightsfor the first time. I am extremely fortunate for this opportunity, andlook forward to sharing my experiences upon our return. January was a jam-packed month (once the temperature moved

above -10, that is)! Our 8th graders were finally eligible for USY, andafter four lounge nights, the fun is just beginning. We also celebratedTu B’Shvat, the holiday of the trees. Every time I celebrate Tu B’Shvat,I think about the fact that the Jewish people have a holiday specificallydevoted to nature. It’s not something we necessarily are alwaysthinking about, but when Tu B’Shvat comes around I take a lookaround, and am thankful for the nature that surrounds me. In addition the Ta’am Yisrael trip, February is filled with fun

activities for our youth! Feb. 7-8 marks the annual USY MidwinterConvention, which is hosted by B’nai Tikveh. We will also be havingour annual Kadima/USY Ski Trip over Presidents day, where we willhead up to the Wisconsin Dells for skiing, lodging and an indoorwaterpark. Lastly, on February 23, the Men’s Club Man of the Year and Youth

of the Year dinner will take place. This year our Youth of the Yearhonoree is Ms. Julia Braude. We would like to congratulate her on thehonor, and also thank her for all the work she has put in over her fouryears in USY at Congregation Beth Shalom.

TO AUTHOR JACQUELINE JULES AND CBS EASTERN EUROPEAN TORAH PROJECT for providing our students with an incredible

educational experience!!!Although Jacqueline Jules only spent Sunday, January 19th with us, all

of our students, in preparation for her visit, enjoyed months of reading andlistening to her books. In addition, they wrote stories and drew illustrationsto share with her. Each grade level from Kindergarten through Hay receivedspecial attention and was motivated to continue writing and illustratingbecause of her inspiring suggestions.

Ms. Jules was amazed by the talent and creativity of our students.Following are her comments: “These stories are so imaginative and soimbued with Jewish values and Jewish heart. It was especially fun to seethe Ziz appear in the story from Mrs. Chinsky’s class. I was also impressedby the love of Israel and the Kotel in “A Journey to Israel”. Reading thesestories gives me a sense of your synagogue and the love of Judaismimparted to the children there.”

NEWS FROM THE KETER MINYANBy Harold Schwartz

As we are in the midst of the winter months whenmembers of our Keter Minyan have gone to warmerplaces, we need additional help in completing ourminyan. Although we have not missed a morningminyan lately, often it is a very close call , so we ask foryour participation in this important Mizvah. The next several columns will focus on an

interesting prayer that we recite most weekdaymornings, “Tachanun”. Tachanun, also called “neffillatapayim”,“falling on the face”, in Hebrew, is recited atmost weekday morning services and by Orthodox Jewsat the afternoon service as well. It is recited after theAmidah and omitted on Shabbat, Jewish Holidays andseveral other occasions. There is a longer version ofthis prayer that is recited on Monday and Thursday. Each weekday, except Monday and Thursday when

the Torah is read, Tachanun consists of three (in someSiddurim, two) short paragraphs. It begins with a versetaken from Samuel II (24:14) and continues with Psalm6:2-11, which according to tradition, King Davidcomposed while ill and in great pain. In the presence ofa Torah scroll, this prayer is offered while leaning onthe left hand or sleeve (the right hand or sleeve, ifTefillin is worn on the left arm). After completion ofthe introductory paragraph(s), one resumes a normalsitting position for the remainder of the prayer. It is ourcustom at the Keter Minyan to sing together the versesbeginning with “Shomer Yisroael”, Guardian of Israel. After the prayer is completed half- Kaddish is recited. On Monday and Thursday a longer version is

recited, as the Talmud says that those are the days of“et ratzhon”, divine goodwill. It is felt that on thosedays, our prayers of supplication will be more readilyaccepted, hence longer prayers offered. There are manytraditions regarding the Tachanun prayer depending onthe community setting. Sephardim, Chasidim, andother groups vary widely in the construction of theprayer and the posture taken during recitation. Theessence of Tachanun is, however, our personal prayersof supplication, which as Rabbi Wolkin puts so aptly, can be said “from the words of the Siddur or the wordof your heart”.

KERUV CORNERKERUV: Welcoming Interfaith Families

BOB SPECTORShalom Chaverim,I hope this snowy cold first month of 2014 is

accompanied with good health and happiness toyou and your loved ones.

Dear Beth Shalom Family,During the Shabbat morning service on

November 23rd our Keruv initiative sponsored a panel discussionthat included four couples who shared their interfaith experienceswith our congregation followed by a 30 minute question andanswer session after the Kiddush lunch. I was not sure how wellyou would receive this program as it was a significant departurefrom our traditional Shabbat service. Close to 200 of you attended, and for me as one of the panel discussants this was one of the mostintimate moments in my 20 years at Beth Shalom. On behalf ofour participants and our interfaith initiative I want to thank you forcreating and being a part of a loving and supportive environmentthat allowed us to share many very personal feelings andexperiences. For those of you who attended, thank you for youroutpouring of hugs and kind words. While I knew this would bea meaningful experience for the members of our panel I clearlyunderestimated how profoundly meaningful this would be for allof you. The support you have given to our intermarried familiesand the Keruv initiative is very special and should not be taken forgranted. Unfortunately, yours is not the universal response amongConservative synagogues in the United States. While the Hebrewword Keruv, literally meaning coming together, refers to ourFederation of Jewish Men’s Club’s intermarriage initiative, yourresponse to this particular program speaks to your collective desireto develop a greater sense of connection with your fellowmembers. There are so many ways to experience theseconnections at Beth Shalom, and I have no doubt that our clergywill support more Shabbat morning opportunities that offer a‘keruv’ experience. On behalf of our Interfaith Initiatve, thank you for your past,

present and continued support in our efforts to have Beth Shalombe a model and symbol of welcoming within the Conservativemovement.

With warm regards,Dr. Bob

As always, you can contact me at [email protected] withyour constructive suggestions and reactions.

For the month of February:

You CAN Make a Difference

Support the Northfield Food Pantry & NW Ark Food Pantry

Thank you to the congregation for making last year’s February food drive so successful! We delivered five carloads of food to the food

pantries. This year we hope to take more food, but we need your help to accomplish this goal.

We ask that every time you come into the synagogue building for classes, meetings, etc. (not Shabbat),

please bring in ONE item for the food pantries.

Suggested items are:

• Pasta • Pancake mix and syrup • Cereal

• Peanut butter • Beverages (coffee, tea, juice) • Any canned item

You will see how You CAN Make a Difference will make a change in the lives of our neighbors. The clients who visit the food pantries each month live in our community and need our help now.

Director, Dror Shaul, 2006 Location: Congregation Beth ShalomA boy edging into his teens has to deal with his unstable mother and a commune full of eccentrics along with the typical dilemmas of growing up in this satiracal comedy drama from Israel. In 1974, Dvir is soon to turn 13 and lives with his mom Miri at Bet Gvurot Kibbutz, a progressive collective populated by people who take pride in their open- minded attitudes. However, they're not so easygoing when it comes to Miri; she's been sent to a mental hospital more than once, and her instability is more than most of the residents want to deal with, leaving Dvir to look after his mother with the help of his older brother. Miri persuades her Swiss boyfriend to join her at the kibbutz, even though he isn't Jewish, but he isn't wercomed by the other residents, and an unpleasant incident involving a neighbor's dog turns the couple into outcasts. In the midst of all this, Dvir is trying to prepare for his bar mitzvah, whic at the kibbbutz is combined with a severe regimen of survival training; he also gets a crash course in his ongoing maturity when he developes a crush on Maya, a cute girl his age.

“Its okay, the children aren’t effected”But what if you knew they were?

Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse aslong as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’tunderstand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeatthe behaviors they have seen.

According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abusein their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety.

What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; itaffects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers freecounseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.

The Israel Committee presents:

CBS ISRAEL STORIESCapturing Beth Shalom’s connection with Israel

one congregant at a time

If you start with the words “L’dor Vador” (generation togeneration) and then add “Eretz Israel” you get to the essence ofDan Mendelevitz’s connection to Israel. Dan’s family ties to Israelare very deep and go back to the time before Israel’s creation as astate. His grandparents moved to Petach Tikva (now a suburb ofTel Aviv), in the mid-1920’s to escape the pogroms in present dayBelarus where Dan’s family originated. Dan’s father helped fightfor Israel’s independence as a member of Etz”l (Irgun), while histwo uncles were in the Haganah. Dan’s relatives have fought in allof Israel’s wars.Dan’s father and mother met in Israel when his mom, originally

from Cleveland, was visiting the country. They were married inCleveland where they started their family. Growing up, Dan wasinstilled with a strong nationalistic pride for the State of Israel andas well as a solid religious foundation for Judaism. He was veryactive in the Jewish youth group Habonim and remembers hisactivism for Soviet Jewry. On his first trip to Israel shortly after becoming a Bar Mitzvah,

Dan remembers spending time with his grandfather for the one andonly time, and listening the stories of his time in Israel. Dan has agreat memory of them going to the Kotel, the first time hisgrandfather had been there since before 1948. After college, Dan took a year off and participated in the year-

long World Union of Jewish Students program in Israel. Duringthis WUJS experience he met his wife, Sharon Ganellen, a matchkindled by their shared love for Israeli folk dance. Sharon isoriginally from Chicago. They presently live in Northbrook, andhave one son, Arik; who is a junior at Kalamazoo College. And not to push things too quickly but…Dan’s parents met in

Israel…Dan and Sharon met in Israel…could the trifecta (withArik) be a possibility? When you see Dan or Sharon be sure to askabout the generations of his family and their strong ties to Israel. The roots of this family tree are deeply planted in Eretz Israel.

It is not easy writing a bulletin article everymonth. As I read Dear Abby, she featured acolumn her mother had adapted and I thoughtit contained sage advice. Her mother wasPauline Phillips. Pauline and her sister, knownas Ann Landers, wrote articles for differentnewspapers. I grew up reading those columnsevery morning at breakfast as did a lot of us.Pauline shared the original credo of Al-Anon.

I am not going to give you the whole kaboodle but just a fewparagraphs.

JUST FOR TODAY. I will accept what is. I will not dwell onthoughts that will depress me. If my mind fills with clouds I willchase them away and fill it with sunshine.

JUST FOR TODAY I will accept what is and I will face reality.I will correct those things that I can correct and accept those thingsthat I cannot.

JUST FOR TODAY I will make a conscious effort to beagreeable. I will be kind and courteous to those who cross my pathand I will not speak ill of others. I will speak softly and not interruptwhen someone else is talking.

JUST FOR TODAY I will refrain from improving anybody butmyself.

JUST FOR TODAY I will gather the courage to do what is rightand take responsibility for my own actions.

Have Happy Healthy Safe 2014. Marti
