New networks were launched in Cote d’Ivoire, Vanuatu and the Pacific. Eight of the 13 networks responded to emergencies together with national and international actors. These included the Cyclone Enawo response in Madagascar, the flood and drought response in Sri Lanka, the earthquake response in Mexico, election preparedness in Kenya and support to conflict-affected populations in the Philippines. 2017 in briefCBi Member Networks

At the global level, CBi supported 13 private sectornetworks in 2017 in setting up and strengtheningstrategic private sector engagement in disaster riskreduction, emergency preparedness, response andrecovery related areas. New networks were launched inCote d’Ivoire, Vanuatu and the Pacific. Eight of the 13networks responded to emergencies togetherwith national and international actors. Flagship Tools

Together with the Boston Consulting Group, CBideveloped two tools to help establish and strengthenprivate sector-led networks. The Network AssessmentTool enables networks to assess their maturity andperformance, identify gaps, measure performance andplan priorities. This tool connects to the NetworkFoundation Guide, a step-by-step guide for launchingand strengthening private sector networks. These toolswill be developed into an online course module in thecoming weeks. Find the preliminary version online

Advocacy and Awareness Raising

In 2017, CBi raised awareness of and advocated for private sector engagement in disastermanagement by co-organizing and participating in 23 major events. The media coverageabout CBi in 2017 reached an audience of over 129 million people in total. Events andcoverage include:

In the 2017 Report of the UN Secretary-Generalentitled “Enhanced cooperation between the UnitedNations and all relevant partners, in particular the privatesector”, CBi was featured as an example of thetransformative role of local business networks. Read thereport here.

New CBi Online Portal

The new online portal was launched in September. Inaddition to the more visual outlook, users can nowbecome part of the online community by creating aprofile, joining networks, following events and othercontent. In 2017 the portal has attracted a globalaudience from 156 countries reaching almost 30,000page views. In the coming months users will be able to get moreinformation about emergencies and areas of neededsupport, organize interactive online discussions,collaborate, take online courses and access an onlinelibrary. New Partners

In 2017, three new global Resource Partners - Government of Australia, the EuropeanUnion and the United Nations Global Compact - joined existing global level ResourcePartners - the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Government of Belgium, the BostonConsulting Group and the UPS Foundation. The International Federation of Red Cross andRed Crescent Societies remains as a Program Partner of CBi. Hundreds of companies

New work streams

Complex EmergenciesWhile a body of knowledge and guidancematerial exist in relation to private sectorengagement in disaster risk reduction and naturaldisasters, there is a significant gap in relation tocollective private sector engagement in complexemergencies. CBi, with support from the EU, isdeveloping new tools for these more challengingoperating environments. Read More

Impact Measurement andOrganizational EffectivenessThe results of the Network Assessment show thatthe lack of systematic monitoring, evaluation andimpact measurement hinders the ability of privatesector networks to demonstrate systematicevidence of impact, mobilize new members, andstrengthen their overall efforts. In 2018 CBi willprovide more support in this area.

Emergency OperationsCenters and use of newtechnologies There is a lot of interest from other countries tolearn from the experience in the Philippineswhere the CBi Member Network - the PhilippineDisaster Resilience Foundation - has set up theworld’s first private sector Emergency OperationsCenter (EOC). In 2018 CBi will further assesshow the private sector can support nationalsystems, and potentially use of artificialintelligence and other big data tools forpredictions.

Other Areas As a demand driven initiative, CBi continuouslylooks for new opportunities to further scaleprivate sector engagement for greater impactresponding to the needs expressed by a varietyof partners.
