SAFETY ADVICE: This instructable uses sharp tools and involves fire. Be careful about it. If you are not sure how to use, don't continue. For kids, it isMANDATORY adult supervision and help.

CANDLE SAFETY RULES (please, attach to your candle if you give it as present)DO NOT LEAVE candle unattended, or close to children.DO NOT PLACE on small places, in draughts or burn them near flammable material.

BE AWARE of the surface you are placing the candle on: their containers/holders can reach high temperatures, which could scorch furniture or even melt thesurface they are placed on.MAKE SURE the candle is properly extinguished after use. Never use water.DO NOT MOVE burning or just extinguished candles, specially for this kind of candles.

Step 1:Tools and materialsThis is a kitchen work so... welcome to my kitchen!

You will need:

1. Some old candles/wax.2. Wick (I get this from another old candle).3. Wax crayons.4. Double boiler / saucepan and jar.5. Ice (prepared before).6. Empty brik (juice, milk or whatever).7. Chopping knife and board.8. Stick (not in photo, sorry).9. Plastic bag (not in photo, sorry again).

And, of course, you will need also a cooker and some water...

Step 2:Cut up wax into piecesRemove plastic protection from old candles and cut up wax into pieces. Don't worry if wax has soot, but discard big dirty parts.

Then, if needed, extract carefully the wick from an old candle.

Step 3:Melting wax and colouring itMelt the wax using double boiler, or a home made double boiler with the jar (like me). I put a metallic washer at the bottom of the saucepan to help boiling water movebelow jar (this is not mandatory).

Add a piece of crayon of desired colour. It doesn't matter if you add some rests of other coloured wax.

This will take few minutes. Stir it with the stick to accelerate process.

WARNING:

Wax is flammable, so you must use this method for melting it, because the water temperature is always below wax's flash point (150 'C, 300 'F).Don't put so much water, because the jar will raise it.Be aware there is always water. If you need to add more, stop fire, get the jar and add water. Then continue melting.

Step 4:Prepare mouldIf you are using new wick, quickly dip it quickly into hot wax and wait a minute to harden.

Cut the brik at the middle and rinse it. Make a hole on the bottom for the wick and use the stick to maintain it upright.

Step 5:Pour ice and waxNow, crush ice. For this, you can put ice cubes in a plastic bag, close it and hit repeatedly against chopping board.

Put crushed ice into mould and pour over hot wax. Don't worry if there is no space for wax. It melts ice creating strange paths. You must cover all the ice, because thepart will be the bottom of the finished candle. Do not move the mould in the next hour.

If you want a solid candle, don't use ice. Just pour the hot wax into the mould, but you must wait more than one hour. In this case, remember that wax reduces its voluwhen it cools down.

To wash tools, I recommend you first heat them and use a toilet paper absorbing rests of wax. Then, wash as usually wi th hot water.

Step 6:Finally, remove the mouldAfter about an hour, remove the mould but remember there is water inside!!! Now, sorry but you must wait some hours again, in order to dry the candle. Once the can

is totally dry, you can enjoy it.Don't forget to save rests of wax in the folds of the mould: you can use in future works. Also, when the candle lasts, you can reuse the remaining wax again and againmake new unique candles.

Step 8:Herramientas y materialesSe trata de un trabajo en la cocina asi que... !bienvenido a mi cocina!

Necesitas:

1. Velas viejas o cera.2. Mecha (yo la he sacado de una vela vieja).3. Ceras de colores infantiles.4. Cazo y tarro de cristal (para hacer un banno maria).5. Hielo (ya preparado).6. Un brik vacio (de zumo, leche o lo que sea).7. Cuchillo de cocina y tabla de cortar.8. Un palito (no en la foto, lo siento).9. Una bolsa de plastico (tampoco en la foto, vaya).

Y, por supuesto, una cocina y agua...

Step 9:Trocea la ceraQuita la proteccion de plastico de las velas viejas y trocea la cera. No te preocupes si la cera tiene un poco de hollin, pero quita las partes sucias.

Despues, si lo necesitas, extrae con cuidado la mecha de otra vela.

Step 10:Funde la cera y colorealaFunde la cera al banno maria. He puesto una arandela metalica en el fondo del cazo para que el agua hierva por debajo del tarro (pero esto no es obligatorio).

Annade un trozo de cera del color deseado. No importa si ademas echas algunos restos de cera de otros colores.

Esto tarda unos minutos. Remueve con el palito para acelerar el proceso.

ATENCION:

La cera es inflamable, por lo que usa el banno maria para fundirla ya que la temperatura siempre esta por debajo de su punto de ignicion (150 'C, 300 'F).No pongas mucha agua, porque el tarro la hara subir.Debes estar pendiente de que siempre haya agua. Si necesitas annadir, apaga el fuego, saca el tarro y annade el agua. Despues continua fundiendo.

Step 11:Prepara el moldeSi estas usando una mecha nueva, rapidamente metela en la cera caliente y espera un minuto a que se endurezca.

Corta el brik por la mitad y enjuagalo. Haz un agujero en el culo para la mecha y usa el palito para mantenerla derecha.

Step 12:Vierte el hielo y la ceraAhora pica el hielo. Para ello, puedes poner los cubitos de hielo en una bolsa de plastico, cerrarla y golpearla repetidamente contra la tabla de cortar.

Echa el hielo picado en el molde y vierte encima la cera caliente. No te preocupes si no parece haber sitio para la cera. Derretira el hielo creando curiosos caminos.Debes cubrir todo el hielo, ya que la parte superior sera la base de la vela. No muevas el molde durante una hora.

Si quieres hacer una vela solida, no uses el hilo. Simplemente vierte la cera en el molde, pero deberas esperar mucho mas. En este caso, recuerda que la cera reducsu volumen al enfriarse.

Para lavar los utensilios, te recomiendo que primero los calientes y les pases un papel de cocina que absorbera los restos de cera. Despues labalos con agua calient

Step 13:Finalmente, retira el moldeTras una hora, retira el molde !pero recuerda que hay agua dentro! Ahora, lo siento, pero debes esperar unas cuantas horas mas, para que la vela se seque totalmen

Luego, a disfrutarla.No te olvides de guardar los restos de cera que queden en los pliegues del molde: los podras usar para futuras veces. Ademas, cuando la vela se agote, puedesreutilizar toda la cera una y otra vez para fabricar velas unicas.

I've also heard this works really well with snow instead of ice. Or will the snow melt before it has a chance to make spaces in the wax?

javipzsays: Apr 27, 2010. 10:18 AM REPey! que alegra un instructable en castellano! Curiosamente mi primer instructable fue un motor DC, y el nico que se quej de que lo hicera en castellanoera un argentino.

Le expliqu que ninguna gran web, youtube, google, facebook etc, empez en castellano, por gente como nosotros que ponen los contenidos en nuestroidioma es cuando se genera un trafico de hispanohablantes sin el cual, los webmasters no se pensaran abrir el sitio a otro idioma.

No obstante para proyectos originales como este, est bien hacerlo en dos idiomas. Como motores DC aqu hay a patadas, no me molest en traducir elmio.

Nada ms, solo aadir que esto me parece muy original y algn da lo har como regalo original. nimo que poco a poco iremos creando comunidad encastellano. ;-)

I suggestiothought about the layout: maybe do each step with both languages instead of a complete instructable in both Spanish and English. I have otherinstructables with both languages in each step, but some people noticed me that is so confusing, so I decided to split but inside the same instructable (got the idea from another English-French instructable).
