1. The potential health effects of caustic soda are:

(a) Skin contact - Contact can cause pain, redness,

(b) Eye contact - Contact causes severe burns with

2. It reacts violently with many chemicals,

including, water, organic acids, inorganic acids,

oxidizing agents and metals. Corrosive to

aluminum alloys, carbon steel and other metals.

Contact with water causes violent frothing and

spattering. Reacts with metals to produce highly

flammable hydrogen gas. Closed containers may

rupture violently when heated releasing contents.

Toxic sodium oxide fumes can be generated at

high temperatures.




3. It is a very strong base and considered as a

contaminant if disposed in the water. Fatal to

aquatic organisms and fish if the pH of natural

water-bodies is higher than pH8.

4. Large discharges may contribute to increased alkalinity in effluent treatment systems and injure sewage treatment organisms.
