His father has also survived, and they encounter a few other family groups, as if there were some genetictrait that confers resistance to the plague. Most of the refugees are aloneand represent the variety of South African cultures.

Over the next five years they struggle to form a Utopian society inthe face of terrifying dangers and challenges. W e can evaluate over timehow well different philosophies work in building society. Nico feels marginalized by his father's commitment to building theircommunity and he falls under the influence of a mysterious and powerfulman whose world view is contrary to all he has been taught. The awkwardrelationship of a father and teen-aged son is beautifully and honestlyrendered. There are some quirky, wonderful characters, including a 3 or4-year old Xhosa orphan whom Nico rescues and his father adopts.

Nico is a crack shot, and becomes a heroic soldier in frequent warswith the orc-like motorcycle gangs. He falls in love with a girl rescued fromone of these gangs after she tries to kill him. Later they both compete in amarathon to qualify for membership in an elite military unit, and she takesadvantage of his interest to knock him out of the race.

After his father is murdered, he tries to track the killer. Evidenceseems to suggest that one contentious faction may be responsible, and Nicois positive there are spies seeking to destroy the community, but it is hisadolescence that blinds him. Finally, he is overwhelmed by one of the mostbizarre surprise endings in literature. FINE $24

Lewitt & Him was a teamof Polish artists who emigrated toEngland following the Nazi invasionof their country in 1939. Their bold, almost abstract designs inspiredmany other children's bookillustrators, particularly after thewar. Their characteristic style evolvedfrom blending surrealist and cubisttendencies with whimsicalhumour.’Him wrote of theirmeeting, “when I met Lewitt ... wediscovered that we had almostidentical views on graphic design.

We were both perfectionists. We also discovered that instead of showering eachother with compliments, we could together achieve a much higher level. Althoughover the years we never quit arguing, the results seem to suggest that ultimately, inthis we were not mistaken.”

The majority of books were stilllocked in the Jugenstil manner, but here wassomething more like the modern advertising

art advocated by the Bauhaus. That the subject served an educationalpurpose, makes the experiment all the more interesting. VG $75
