CATTAI PUBLIC SCHOOL Pelican Post Newsletter 15.10.2015 Term 4 Week 2 ________________________________________________________________________________ _______________ From the Principal…. Welcome back everyone! We are 2 weeks into Term 4 and we have already been very busy with the Principal’s morning tea, the Hawkesbury Dance Festival, the CPR course and the start of our Softball program. Throughout the Term students will also be participating in a variety of things such as a Chess tournament, Kindy Orientation, Longneck Lagoon, Small Schools’ Camp, Surf Education visit, Swim School, the Mini-fair and the Movie day. With all these extra-curricular activities spread throughout the term I’m sure it will go very fast. CATTAI CATCH Last weekend saw the major fundraising event for our school’s P&C. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the P&C for all their hard work in pulling this event together to raise money for our school. It took a lot of organisation and the amount of donations that were bought into the event was extremely impressive. The participants in the fishing competition all had a good time and I encourage more families to participate next year. SCHOOL BIKES During the school holidays Keith Brown (Oscar’s Grandad) and his friend George came and fixed our school bikes. They were able to fix the majority of the bikes so that more students can use them on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On behalf of the school I would like to say a huge thank you to Keith and George! Newsletter 15.10.2015 Term 4 Week 2_______________________________________________________________________________________________From the Principal….

CATTAI CATCHLast weekend saw the major fundraising event for our school’s P&C. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the P&C for all their hard work in pulling this event together to raise money for our school. It took a lot of organisation and the amount of donations that were bought into the event was extremely impressive. The participants in the fishing competition all had a good time and I encourage more families to participate next year.

SCHOOL BIKESDuring the school holidays Keith Brown (Oscar’s Grandad) and his friend George came and fixed our school bikes. They were able to fix the majority of the bikes so that more students can use them on Wednesdays and Thursdays. On behalf of the school I would like to say a huge thank you to Keith and George!

WEEDS AND CHICKENS

Another huge, thank you to Mark Mitchell and Bejay, who came into school during the holidays to spray the weeds and clip the wings of the chickens. Also thank you to the families who came in and looked after the chickens. A new combination lock will be in place for the Christmas Holidays to save any confusion over the lock.

HAWKESBURY DANCE FESTIVALOn Tuesday night the dance group performed at the Hawkesbury Dance Festival. The dance group did an outstanding job and looked fantastic on stage. Thank you to Mrs Evans for helping out on the night and to Miss Mellefont who choreographed the dance and worked hard with the group throughout Terms 1, 2 and 3.

KINDY ORIENTATION Next week sees the commencement of our school’s Kindy Orientation program. The program will run for 4 weeks and will allow our 2016 Kindy students get a feel for ‘big school’.

SPORTS IN SCHOOLSLast Friday saw the start of our Sports in Schools program. Students will need to have a hat and a water bottle as it can get pretty hot.

for students in the K/1 room so that parents can attend the information session in the 2/3 room. The information session will be on comprehension.

LOCKDOWN PRACTICEToday we had a lockdown practice just before recess. This practice is a requirement of the Department of Education and allows the school to review its procedures when dealing with an emergency. The students did a fantastic job and knew exactly what to do when they heard the lockdown bell.

INTERRELATE – FAMILY EVENING PROGRAMInterrelate is a service that provides information sessions on puberty and the human body. This year Maroota Public School will be hosting an Interrelate Family Evening Program. The family program will be held on Monday 23rd of November and will consist of 2 sessions. The first session is called “Where did I come from?” and is aimed at students in years 3 to 6. This session will start at 6pm and run through until 7pm. The second session is called “Preparing for Puberty” and is aimed at students in years 5 and 6. This session will run from 7.15pm-8.15pm. An information sheet has been included with the newsletter and permission notes were sent home today.

CATTAI CATCH FISHING COMPETITIONOctober 9th -

11th, 2015

PRESIDENT’S

REPORT

At 12 pm Friday the Cattai Catch Fishing Competition began. The kids were eager to finish class and get their lines in the water. There were 100 entrants in total. A large majority of anglers set up camp at the Mitchells riverside property and keenly began fishing. Friday night was busy with everyone meeting each other and fishing for any information that might land them the ‘big one’. After a hearty BBQ breakfast the kids donned their life jackets and headed to the pontoon or to their boats with the adults in tow. Initially, the fish were a bit slow in biting but as time went on, the kids practiced their fishing skills and the fish photos started to drift in. A number of eels were caught. They didn’t count but the kids were excited and fascinated at the same time. During this time the spit roast was slowly cooking the lamb and pork for Saturday night dinner.

Downloading photos was a bit of a challenge due to poor internet coverage which we will address for next year’s competition. Saturday night was great fun with a delicious dinner of spit meat on rolls, mushrooms, salad and gravy and it proved to be a good opportunity to catch up and swap stories.

Sunday was the presentation day and BBQ lunch. Whilst the amount of people who came was disappointing, the anticipation and excitement was not. No carp was caught but there were plenty of other winners. Seeing the kids’ expressions when they were presented with their award was a real highlight for me. Especially when it was announced that the first person to lay claim to the title of Longest Overall Bass was McKenzie Delaney.

An amazing amount of work and time went into organising this first Cattai Catch. I can’ t thank Mark, Kim, Bejay and Misty Mitchell enough for their hospitality in having so many people stay and fish from their place. Also to Mark and Kim Mitchell, Des and Tracey Gasgoine who worked tirelessly on gaining prizes from sponsors and assisting us. A huge thank you also to, Kim and Luke Smith, Gerry and Kim Delaney, Caroline and Chris Azmi for all their help in co-ordinating and running the competition. Thank you to Rosanne and Dave Milne for all their help with the grocery shopping and serving on Friday and Sunday. Also thank you to Natalie O’Keeffe and Kate Ford and her family for their assistance at the Sunday presentation.

Thank you to the following families who entered the competition; Wade, Meng, Armstrong, Kinsela, Azmi, Delaney, Smiths, Mitchell, Telfer, Davis, Robertson-Hahn, Marsh. And thank you to the Parson and Brown families who came to the Mitchell’s place and/or to the presentation. The competition was a good success because of all the time and hard work from the P& C Committee and the involvement of our school families. Without it and the amazing teamwork it just wouldn’t of happened. I want to encourage more families next year to get behind the Cattai Catch Comp. as a way of supporting the school.

School are invited to join hundreds of thousands of Australians across the country on Saturday, 24 October by taking part in the Garage Sale Trail. The Garage Sale Trail is one big day of buying, selling and social networking. The event aims to encourage Australians to reduce waste and reuse pre-loved items in a fun and creative way – all on the same day. Why not hold a School Garage Sale of unwanted ‘stuff’ and transform your clutter into money and free space. Or ask families of the school to get involved and donate items for the garage sale trail. On average, schools who participate in the Garage Sale Trail make $2000!Schools wishing to take part in the Garage Sale Trail can now register online at www.garagesaletrail.com.au.

Attached is a How-To Guide for Schools to give you an idea of what the event is about and what you could do to raise money. Schools can be as creative as they like to encourage buyers to attend their sales. This is the third year Council has participated in the Garage Sale Trail. Last year over 40 locations held garage sales in the Hawkesbury and were attended by hundreds of people.
