Rib Lath

Widely used as a plaster backing on ceilings,

walls and stud partitions. Rib Lath is also ideal

for refurbishing damaged or aged masonry walls

when a key for rendering is not certain due to

disintegration or softening of the wall face.

Installation of Lath

Diamond Lath

Ca tnic Diamond Lath ma y be f ixed

by (a ) nailing into ca st-in block

ba ckground w ith wa shers over the

lathing, (b) screwing into plugs in

drilled ho les w ith w as hers over the

lathing, (c) expanded type screw

fixings with washers over the

lathing, (d) wiring to prefixed

cha nnel sec tions, a ngles or cleats ,

(e) using screwed fixings, or (f)

battening out using preserved

timber battens with the lath fixed

as descr ibed be low.

Nails (BS 1202: P a rt 1), s tap les

a nd w ire for fixing lath sho uld b e

manufac tured from g alvanized or

sta inles s ste el. Nails for fixing to

timber ba ttens s hould b e 38mm

long w ith a 7mm hea d. Alternatively,

32 x 2mm staples may a lso b e used

if preferred .

If fitting with nails, s crew s o rproprietary screwed fixings, spacers

should be inserted behind the

la thing to a llow render flow throug h.

Fixing to Timber supports

For horizonta l work, C atnic Diamond

Lath sho uld b e fixed w ith the length

of the sheet running across the

timber suppo rts with all the strand s

sloping in the s ame direction.

Supports should b e at centres not

exc eed ing 350mm. Vertica l w ork

sho uld b e fixed w ith a ll stra nds

sloping downwards and away from

the finish fa ce. Using na ils o r

sta ples , s ta rt a t the centre of a sheet

and na il to eac h succe ssive support

working along the mid-line of the

shee t tow ards its edg es. The nails

or sta ples should be d riven in at a n

angle pointing away from the sheetce ntre thereby providing tens ion to

the sheet a s they a re a pplied.

Fixing should then be completed

from the c entre to the top a nd

botto m sides s ta rting a t the central

support and nailing at 100mm

centres , maximum.

Ends o f Ca tnic Diamond lath s hould

be lapped over supports not less

than 50mm and w ired tog ether at

150mm centres . Sides should b e

lapped not less than 25mm and tied

w ith tying wire a t a pproxima tely

150mm centres.

Fixing to Steel Channel

The lath sho uld b e fixed to ste el

channel using 1.22mm soft

ga lvanized steel tying w ires at not

more tha n 100mm c entres. The tie

should be mad e b y forming a hairpin

at the end o f a length of w ire, the

length being at least twice the depth

of the runner.

The ha irpin sho uld b e pus hed b endfirst up throug h the lath, c los e to

one side o f the runner a nd pulled

ba ck w ith one leg of the w ire on

either side of the runner. B oth

strands of wire should be pulled

taut a nd given a few twists w ith top

cutters before cutting any surplus

w ire. The tw ist ma y then be pus hed

flat a ga inst the la th.

Req uired tension in the s heet ma y

be a chieved by pa ss ing the leg of

the hairpin to one side or the other

of the la th junctions in a cc ordance

w ith the d irection of the d esired

tension. Continue installation as

for timbe r supports.

Rib lath

Ca tnic Rib Lath may b e f ixed to a

solid background using proprietary

f ix ings suitab le for hold ing the sheets

firmly in pla ce . The ed ge ribs sh ould

be nes ted w ith the a pex of the r ib in

contact with the background and

fixed to the ba ckground at 150mm

centres . Sheet end s s hould overlap

by a t leas t 50mm. A row o f fixings

should be applied at 600mm

horizontal spacing, starting 350mm

in from the sheet e nds and 200mm

in from ea ch of the top a nd botto m

sides (for horizonta lly pos itioned

sheets).

If fixing to supports, rib lath should

be fixed with the ribs running at right

angles to the s upports w ith the apex

of the rib in conta ct w ith the suppo rt

ensuring the spa ns do not exceed

600mm. The lath s hould b e fixed to

timber grounds using a nail or sta ple

driven throug h every rib w here itcross es ea ch s upport. When fixing

to ste el cha nnel, use 1.63mm or two

strands of 1.22mm soft galvanized

steel wire tied around the rib where

it crosses eac h support.

Lap ends of lathing o ver supports not

less than 50mm and wire toge therwi th

1.63mm tying w ire. S tainless stee l tie

wire should be used with stainless

steel lath. Where laps between

supports cannot be avoided, lap

ends not less tha n 100mm and

secure each pair of ribs together

with two row s o f 1.63mm tie wire

at approximately 100mm centres.

Sides of a djoining Rib Lath sheets

should b e pressed to gether with

the edge rib of ea ch s heet nested

and tied with 1.22mm tying w ire orpunch f ixed a t centres no greater

than 150mm.
