October 6, 2011

Dear Colleagues, The Catholic Physicians Guild of Phoenix is honored to host the 80th Annual Educational Conference of the Catholic Medical Association. We wish you “Bienvenido” to the Grand Canyon State.

We have selected as the focus of the conference a topic as old as the profession of medicine and yet of critical importance to its future, and to the future of the Catholic health-care ministry—the formation of physicians. Given the increasingly challenging world of health care, physicians must seek out and renew the knowledge, skills, and character formation necessary to uphold their Catholic faith and the integrity of the medical profession consistent with the Hippocratic tradition.

The knowledgeable and talented speakers we have assembled will contribute to this formation by addressing foundational topics in moral theology, clinical moral decision making, spirituality, and the law, including the application of the USCCB’s Ethical and Religious Directives. They will help participants to apply the concepts and principles discussed in presentations to difficult ethical dilemmas through small group and panel discussions.

The 80th Annual Educational Conference will feature distinctive Southwest themes in accommodation and cuisine, as well as a unique special event with a Latin flair. At the same time, under the protection of our patroness, Our Lady of Guadalupe, participants will experience the spiritual milieu for which CMA conferences are famous, including daily Mass, rosary, and confessions, as well as Eucharistic Adoration. We are honored to have the Most Rev. José H. Gómez, D.D., Archbishop of Los Angeles, as the principal celebrant of our White Mass and as keynote speaker.

It is our prayer and hope that all participants will have an unforgettable experience of faith, formation, and fellowship. In Christ,

Maricela P. Moffitt, M.D., M.P.H.President-Elect and Planning Committee Chair

CONFERENCE PLANNING COMMITTEE

DESCRIPTION

The formation and character development of physicians has been central to the Western tradition of medicine since its origin in the school of Hippocrates. The Oath of Hippocrates witnesses to the mutually reinforcing values of respect for human life, for the dignity of patients and their household, for teachers and the medical profession and, ultimately, for God. Over the last century, however, the collapse of Judeo-Christian values in Western culture, and of the Hippocratic tradition in medicine, have fundamentally changed the quality and the goals of physician formation.

This conference will show why the proper formation of physicians not only remains a timely topic, but is of critical importance to the future of the profession of medicine and of the Catholic health-care ministry. Now, more than ever, medical students and physicians must seek out and renew the knowledge, skills, and character formation necessary to uphold their Catholic faith and the integrity of the medical profession.

A series of world-class speakers will contribute to this formation by addressing foundational topics in moral theology, clinical moral decision making, spirituality, and the law, including the application of the USCCB’s Ethical and Religious Directives. Conference faculty members will help participants to apply the concepts and principles discussed in presentations to difficult ethical dilemmas through small group and panel discussions.

PRAYER OF THE CATHOLIC PHYSICIAN

LORD JESUS,

Divine Physician, who in your earthly life showed special concern for those who suffer and entrusted to your disciples the ministry of healing, make us ever ready to alleviate the trials of our brethren. Make each one of us, aware of the great mission that is entrusted to him, strive always to be, in the performance of daily service, an instrument of your merciful love. Enlighten our minds, guide our hands, make our hearts diligent and compassionate. Ensure that in every patient we know how to discern the features of your divine Face.

YOU WHO ARE THE WAY, provide us with the gift of knowing how to imitate You every day as medical doctors not only of the body but of the whole person, helping those who are sick to tread with trust their own earthly path until the moment of their encounter with You.

YOU WHO ARE THE TRUTH, provide us with the gift of wisdom and science in order to penetrate the mystery of man and his transcendent destiny as we draw near to him in order to discover the causes of his malady and find suitable remedies for it.

YOU WHO ARE THE LIFE, provide us with the gift of preaching and bearing witness to the ‘Gospel of life’ in our profession, committing ourselves to defending it always, from conception to its natural end, and to respect the dignity of every human being, and especially the dignity of the weakest and the most in need.

Make us O Lord, Good Samaritans, ready to welcome, treat, and console those we encounter in our work. Following the example of the holy medical doctors who have preceded us, help us to offer our generous contribution to the constant renewal of health care structures.

Bless our studies and our profession; enlighten our research and our teaching. Lastly, grant to us, having constantly loved and served You in our suffering brethren, that at the end of our earthly pilgrimage we may contemplate your glorious countenance and experience the joy of the encounter with You in your Kingdom of joy and everlasting peace. Amen

The 1995 Restatement of

THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES

I SWEAR in the presence of the Almighty and before my family, my teachers and my peers that according to my ability and judgment I will keep this oath and stipulation:

TO RECKON all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient.

I WILL FOLLOW that method of treatment which according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous. I will neither prescribe nor administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform act or omission with direct intent deliberately to end a human life. I will maintain the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life.

WITH PURITY, HOLINESS, AND BENEFICENCE I will pass my life and practice my art. Except for the prudent correction of imminent danger, I will neither treat any patient nor carry out any research on any human being without the valid informed consent of the subject or the appropriate legal protector thereof, understanding that research must have as its purpose the furtherance of the health of that individual. Into whatever patient setting I enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption and also from the seduction of any patient.

WHATEVER IN CONNECTION with my professional practice or not in connection with it I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad I will not divulge, reckoning that all such should be kept secret.

WHILE I CONTINUE to keep this oath unviolated may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine with the blessing of the Almighty and respected by my peers and society, but should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot.

Tango and the Mystery of Divine Love

Dinner and Dancing with a Latin Flair

THURSDAY’S SPECIAL EVENT

Bring your dancing shoes and join us for an elegant dinner with Latin flair, followed by “Tango and the Mystery of Divine Love” with international speaker and Argentine tango enthusiast Katrina J. Zeno.

Zeno will inspire you through her insights into Argentine tango as the perfect metaphor for our relationship with Christ. She will share her joys, struggles, and arguments with God through Argentine tango while elucidating its

connection to Pope John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” and the mystery of divine love. Dance instructors will help you to begin to apply what you’ve learned and kick off an evening of dancing. Singles as well as couples are welcome to join us for a fun-filled, thought-provoking evening as we discover why it takes “three to tango!”

Katrina J. Zeno is the coordinator of the John Paul II Resource Center for the Diocese of Phoenix, co-host of EWTN’s series on Pope John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body,” and co-foundress of Women of the Third Millennium. Zeno is a dance instructor, author, and mother.

St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Phoenix, under the leadership of Rev. John Ehrich, MA, MDiv., STL, has established The Institute of Catholic Theology. With classes that are open to Catholics and non-Catholics, the Institute offers instruction in Catholic theology on a broad range of topics, which are taught by highly qualified instructors. While these classes are of special assistance to catechists, youth ministers and Catholic school teachers,

they are offered on an undergraduate level that is intended to reach the average layperson. I also wish to affirm my confidence in the faithfulness of the instructors to the Magisterium of the Church. As courses provided by the Institute have been recorded and are now be-ing made available over the Internet, I wish to affirm my support of the Institute and assure those who are interested in taking advantage of this online resource that I fully endorse this catechetical effort. The Institute of Catholic Theology exists to further enhance the intellec-tual formation of adult Catholics in the Diocese of Phoenix. The Institute

offers classes in Catholic theology on a broad range of topics and is geared toward theological education at the undergraduate level. All

adults are invited to attend, most especially, catechists, youth ministers, and Catholic school teachers. Over 980 students have enrolled

and completed our courses since our inception in 2009.St.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

“The diverse and in-depth education I received at the College was more beneficial for my vocation as a physician than all the “hard sciences” combined, perfectly blending the practical with the philosophical, and allowing me to see Christ in all whom I treat.”

When is a hospital not just a hospital?

When it finds emergency shelter for families in crisis.

When it provides primary healthcare for children without access.

When it provides prenatal care and delivery to uninsured and underinsured women.

When it donates millions in free medical care to those in need.

When it partners with other organizations to provide dozens of critical humanitarian services to its neighbors, including the poor and uninsured.

In short, when it’s St. Mary Medical Center.
