SCHOOL VISIONA Family that Builds Great Wonders

Founded in 1959, St. Francis Xavier High School is steeped in tradition. “Caritas Christi”, or the Love of Christ, has been our school motto since those early days and forms the foundation of the philosophy that we strive to live every day. It involves mutual trust and respect, and the acceptance of responsibility for our actions. St. Francis Xavier strives to provide an environment in which each student can develop his/her spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional potential.

Your high school experience is what you make of it, so make sure to take advantage of all the opportunities available to you. FX has over 28 sports teams as well as many clubs. You can go from playing on the Football Team to participating in Drama Club, or from training and competing in Rowing to fund raising for local charities. FX has something for everyone. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS, You have probably heard about what high school is like or have seen it in movies like High School Musical and Clueless, or TV shows like Riverdale and Glee. To be honest, only half of what they portray is true. High school is a place where students meet some of their closest friends, get an idea of what they want to do with their lives, and enjoy their last three years before adulthood! There is no better place than FX to make this transition. As scary as it sounds, FX ensures that when students walk into those front doors, they are given a safe, caring, and fun environment in which they learn and grow. Aside from all our clubs, sports teams, academies, and classes, students are more than welcome to follow what their interests are, and there is always something for everyone.

When I first came to FX, I had the desire to challenge myself by taking AP courses. Although it was challenging and equally rewarding, it just was not for me. In grade eleven, I decided to change my courses from AP to the 20-1 and 20-2 stream which was a better choice for me. I also came across many videos on social media which gave me lots of ideas of what I wanted to experience at FX, so I joined the Xavier Executive. With the help of the teachers and the former student body president, I was able to pursue my dream of becoming President for XE my final year in high school. Grade 12 has been a combination of focusing more on my studies, but still having fun by running Xavier Executive. I even joined a dance club!

The moral of the story is: when you come to FX, you can be whoever you desire to be. The teachers, students, and administrators will support you every step of the way! You will even be able to change your education level to match your future goals. FX offers amazing classes, clubs, academies, and sports teams. So, if you are willing to explore new things, I can personally guarantee that you will love FX!

I am looking forward to meeting you at the Open House on March 5th and adding another Ram to the Herd!

Xavier Executive is St. Francis Xavier’s student leadership group. Xavier Executive works to build community, school spirit, and FUN! Throughout the year, they plan pep rallies, intramurals, major events around Hallowe’en and Christmas, and theme days, such as Touch of Class and Jersey Day. Driven by our school’s motto, “Caritas Christi”, our Executive chose the theme ‘Branch Out’. They take care of our school community and then branch out to the global community through our major school-wide Bike-a-Thon fundraising that raises money for Sign of Hope and Dreams for Kids charities. Xavier Executive is an inclusive group that welcomes involvement and participation from students all year. Getting involved with Xavier Executive builds new friendships and creates memories to look back on for a lifetime. Students can take the lead by running and organizing events, developing leadership skills by helping with events behind the scenes, or simply being a supporter by staying up-to-date with events that are happening in the school. Students can stay connected with Xavier Executive on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.

Our Learning Centre is a comfortable, quiet study space that enhances our school’s philosophy of a flexible learning environment. Some of the enhancements the centre offers:

• Access to alternative course delivery either through Revelation Online, module based delivery (limited), and courses offered independently at St. Francis Xavier High School.

• Exam Centre: On Friday afternoons from 1 to 2:30 PM the Learning Center is used as an exam center. Students have the opportunity to make up an exam that they have missed the previous week. This way students do not have to miss valuable instruction time to make up any missed assessments.

At St. Francis Xavier, students have been afforded the opportunity to take control of their learning through a period prior to their lunch break. During this 40-minute Flex block which runs Monday to Thursday, students are involved in exam preparation, homework review, tutorials, and catching up on missed assignments or assessments. A variety of information sessions are offered including Post-Secondary, Scholarships, and much more.

Teachers are available for students during this time and are often busy interacting with students either one on one or in larger groups. Positive feedback from our students has been tremendous. Students have control over where they want to be and for how long. Students who have missed school for illness or any other reason are finding it easier to catch up and get back on pace with their classes. Students who also require more time to be spent on a certain subject can choose to spend more of their Flex time in that area.

St. Francis Xavier has a proud tradition of giving back to the community. We have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities, with one of our proudest moments being the FX Bike-a-thon which raises funds for the Sign of Hope. We acknowledge the FX ROCKS committee that is the arm of our social justice projects, and we are excited about new school initiatives that will have our students focus on needs both locally and globally.

Social Studies provides opportunities for students to develop the attitudes, skills, and knowledge that will enable them to become engaged, active, informed, and responsible citizens. It is an issues-focused and inquiry-based interdisciplinary subject that draws upon history, geography, ecology, economics, law, philosophy, political science, and other social science disciplines. It fosters students’ understanding of, and involvement in, practical and ethical issues that face their communities and humankind. Ultimately, Social Studies is integral to the process of enabling students to develop an understanding of who they are, what they want to become, and how to improve the society they want to live in.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERSAt St. Francis Xavier students, who are at a beginner or intermediate level of English acquisition, most often require more experience gaining an understanding of the basics of the English language and of Canada. We offer both ESL Expository English 15/25 and ESL Canadian Studies 15/25 so students are able to obtain a foundational understanding of the English language and the written components required for success in English 10-2 and Social Studies 10-2. Assessments continually evaluate the ELL student’s ability to listen, speak, read, and write in English; therefore, students move through the ESL classes based on their level of English, not necessarily their grade.

In addition to the ESL courses offered, St. Francis Xavier has an ESL Designate who checks in with the students to ensure they are on track and successful in their classes so they graduate in a timely manner (this may take 3-5 years depending on the student’s ability). Should any non-educational obstacles stand in the student’s way, the ESL Designate will refer the student to FX’s Learning Support Services team for additional assistance.

St. Francis Xavier is unique as we are the only school in Canada to provide students an opportunity to participate in one of five sport academies while fulfilling academic course requirements. We have sport academies in baseball, golf, hockey, lacrosse and soccer. While student athletes continue to develop their passion and skill proficiency in one of these sporting activities, they also earn credits for Sports Performance (CTS modules) and Physical Education. We provide flexible timetabling and work hard to accommodate course selections and individual timetable requirements centered on each participant’s academy program. Students have come from as far away as Australia and Israel to participate in our sport academies. Due to the large number of students who apply to colleges in the United States and are therefore required to write the SAT test for college admission.
