Brothers and Sisters, It’s hard to believe that we are fast coming to Labor Day. Although summer continues to the 23rd of September, it is Labor Day that marks the end of no school, vacations from work and all the other activities that we are involved in June thru August. As the end approaches, we here, at the parish, are busy planning for the coming months. I happened to look back at the parish calendar for the past few months and I found it hard to believe that they were the “Lazy Days of Summer”. I couldn’t believe all the activity that went on here at St Stephen during the summer. Liturgically, besides the regular weekend masses, there were three First Fridays with Divine Mercy Chaplet, adoration and benediction, and a Spanish First Friday mass. Every Wednesday evening, we have a bi-lingual mass in honor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Each Monday of the Month we have a mass honoring St Joseph in one of four languages – Polish, Italian, Tagalog, and Spanish. Over the 3 months we’ve celebrated a number of Baptisms, Quinceaňeras, weddings and funerals. Our Choirs continue to practice during the summer months. Spiritually, many of our religiously oriented groups like, Círculo de oración, Jovenes para Cristo, El Shaddai, Legion of Mary, Right to Life, and others continued to meet in June, July, and August. Our Culinaires hosted our St Lawrence Picnic and we held three St Stephen tables for the homeless. Socially, our senior “Golden Hearts, Youth Group, Sol Azteca Dance Group, and others continued to meet. Pastoral Migratoria met and hosted two garage sale this summer. We had hospitality outdoors, weather permitting, after our Sunday masses each weekend. We said goodbye to Sister Julia and welcome to Sisters Teresa and Adriana and, of course, we had our parish picnic! Wow! We certainly were busy this summer! The Renew My Church Program calls for a parish to be vibrant and if busy is part of being vibrant then we are heading in the right direction. However, we are busy because there are many people who contribute their time and talent to all that we do. If it weren’t for them, we couldn’t accomplish much of anything here at the parish. At our Testimonial Dinner on September 13, we will honor the following for their service to St Stephen: Gloria Alvarado, Terri Dahm, Micaela Fajardo, Noreen Johnson, Jose Morales, Glenda Raupp, Zeke Teran, and Charlie Vana . Hope to see you there! Peace, Deacon Bill

Me resulto dificil creer toda

servicio a San Esteban: Gloria Alvarado, Terri Dahm, Micaela Fajardo, Noreen Johnson, José Morales, Glenda Raupp,

Zeke Teran y Charlie Vana. ¡Espero verte allí! Paz,

Diacono Bill Warmouth

Visiting Monstrance The “Visiting Monstrance” depicted here is a visible tool of evangelization used by the Pope John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Association to enhance devotion to the Eucharist throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. This beautiful monstrance was taken to Rome and blessed by Holy Father John Paul II on March 2, 2005, from his room at Gemelli Hospital. He consecrated the vessel speci ically to promote Eucharistic Adoration, prayer for priests, and vocations. It was among the inal items to receive a papal blessing by John Paul II, who was called by our Lord to his inal rest one month later on April 2, 2005.

HandMades

HandMades is a group of volunteers that create handmade items which we donate to local charities. This year, HandMades has taken on two new missions. One is making prayers shawls for hospice patents.

The second is “Lemons of Love” which is a support group for chemo patients. We are making hats, bags, and assorted items. We also donate Chemo hats to Loyola Hospital Cancer Center and Rush pediatric intensive care patients We continue to make and donate hand crafted items for children, veterans, Des Plaines Pantry and other groups. We meet at 1:00 p.m. on Thursdays in the St. Joseph Room. We have materials for people who cannot attend our meeting but would like to participate. Donations of yarn are always appreciated. Phone Avila at 847-824-1206 or Betty at 847-824-9693 and we will supply you with materials.
