Dear Friends,
Beginning Saturday, 1 August, we will have Sung Masses at 5p, 10a and 6p on Sundays. The organ and cantor
will sing the proper and ordinary parts of the Mass. Some local parishes have already returned to sung Mass-
es with servers. I have been holding out, trying to get people in and out of Mass as reverently and as quickly
as possible, and minimizing unnecessary contact. As we go back to normalcy, recognizing that things could
change very quickly, it is important for us to make steps towards re-establishing our corporate worship here
in the parish.
The cantor will sing according to simple melodies in English the Entrance Antiphon, Offertory Antiphon and
Communion Antiphon appointed by the Roman Missal. Please remember that Hymns are actually not a part
of the Roman Rite, and are an importation from Protestantism into Catholic Low Masses before Vatican II,
so we are actually going back to the authentic tradition of the Roman Liturgy. The Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus and
Agnus Dei will be sung according to Mass XI from the Graduale Romanum in Greek/Latin, the setting of the
Ordinary in Gregorian chant for the Sundays of the Year. We plan to have the music and text printed in the
paper bulletin, so we may become familiar with it. At this time, official recommendations are discouraging
singing by the congregation, especially where masks are not in use. But we can still have the music proper to
the Roman Rite sung by our cantors on our behalf. At some point, we will be able to reintegrate congrega-
tional singing of the Ordinary, and, at a later date, the hymns that have become part of our Prince of Peace
vernacular experience.
If you want to start learning Mass XI, the following link will take you to the score and videos with audio to
get it in your ear! https://bit.ly/learnMassXI or scroll down to Latin for Sundays of the Year on https://
www.princeofpeacetaylors.net/sing-the-mass/
The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum concilium, states the
following:
36. The use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites.
116. The Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride of place in liturgical services.
118. Religious singing by the people is to be intelligently fostered so that in devotions and sacred ex-
ercises, as also during liturgical services, the voices of the faithful may ring out according to the
norms and requirements of the rubrics.

Happenings & Needs
Confessions are heard on Wednesdays from 5-6p
and Saturdays from 3.30-4.40p. We will remain in
Croghan Hall to avoid confined spaces.
• Holy Communion is being distributed within the
Mass during daily Mass and after Mass on Sun-
days. This is in accordance with the Diocese of
Charleston’s recommendation.
• Priests, Deacons and EMHC are asked by the
Diocese of Charleston to wear a mask when dis-
tributing Holy Communion.
• If you are homebound and wish to receive Holy
Communion, please contact Michael Thompson
Per Diocesan guidelines, it is encouraged that
Holy Communion be distributed at the door of
the home or in an outdoor space.
Deacons Will Frei and Michael Cellars were or-
dained to the Sacred Priesthood on Friday, 10 July at
Holy Spirit on Johns Island. Fr Smith attended! Please
keep them and all those pursuing vocations in your
prayers.
All requests for use of parish facilities for anything
other than what is already on the post-shutdown
calendar should be remanded to 15 August, per Fr
Smith. Use of the Knights of Columbus Building must
be newly approved by Phil Head.
• Marilyn Alber, 16 July
• Nathan Barontini, 18 July
• Maria Rauch, 5 August
• Jamie Avery, 8 August
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration resumed on the
Feast of the Sacred Heart! Please consider adopting
an hour or become a substitute. For the safety of
our adorers, we’re limiting the volume of adorers at
one time to 4 people, unless otherwise pre-arranged
with Lisa Buss. Disinfectant spray is in the back of
the chapel for each adorer to spray down what has
been touched. And, adorers are encouraged to con-
sider wearing a mask. Contact Lisa Buss
at [email protected] or call
864.508.7123 with questions!
• Adorers are reminded to receive the code di-
rectly from Lisa Buss. Do not expect those inside
the Chapel to interrupt their prayers to open/
close the door. This is a safety risk for adorers.
• Hours in need of adorers:
• 10a Sundays,
• 8p Mondays,
• 11p Tuesdays,
• 2p Wednesdays,
• 12a, 1p and 3p Thursdays and
• 4p Saturdays
If you are unable to receive Holy Communion for whatever reason, make a Spiritual Communion by reciting the following:
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, as though You have al-ready come. I embrace You and unite myself entirely to
You; never permit me to be separated from You.
Do not mix, refill or reconstitute POP’s disinfectant spray bottles. This is a serious safety risk. Prince of Peace Catholic Church is working in coordination with DHEC for proper disinfecting procedures. It is not a matter of opinion.

Fr Tomlinson blessed the marriages of Andrew &
Julia Klusman (20 years) alongside her parents who
are celebrating 45 years of marriage and her brother
and his wife who are celebrating 10 years!
Some people have mistakenly thought that Vatican II did away with Latin and Gregorian chant from the
Mass. In actuality, the Council gave permission for wider use of the vernacular while mandating that pastors
ensure that the faithful be able to participate in Mass also in Latin. At Prince of Peace, we have been faithful
to these liturgical norms of the church by offering the Extraordinary Form of the Mass in Latin daily, as well
as singing parts of the Ordinary of the Mass in Latin at the Ordinary Form English Mass, during Lent and Ad-
vent, as well as at the School Mass. We have been singing Mass XI at the School Mass during Ordinary Time,
as well as Eastertide, for nine years now. Now it is time for our whole parish to learn what the kids have
learned a long time ago, alongside Mass XVII, which we have sung during penitential seasons on Sundays and
Wednesdays for a long time. It’s all part of our restoration of the sacred in a parish dedicated to the renewal
of the liturgy in the tradition of Catholic culture, and we hope you all enthusiastically embrace this beautiful
way to worship the Most Holy Trinity!
Who are the Knights of Co-
lumbus 9184 at Prince of
Peace Catholic Church and
School?
The Knights of Columbus are a
Catholic men's fraternal organiza-
tion in solidarity with our Priests
and serve as the Strong Right Arm of the Church.
They strive to unite with their parish family and
brothers in the areas of faith, family, vocations, and
brotherhood. Our sword is prayer. We pray the
Rosary often!
Step into the Breach today and grow the domes-
tic church at Prince of Peace Catholic Church and
School. Find out more at kofc9184.org, email our

Join us in welcoming the newest members of our parish family: Mitchell Harrison, Amy Holveck and Maria Hernandez and Family
As we navigated the lockdowns of
COVID-19, Fr Smith gave a homily on
Easter Friday over live broadcast to a
Chapel filled with technological equipment
where he said something so strikingly
beautiful:
“I know there are so many of you who
are missing coming to Church and missing
seeing your friends. I miss you guys too. It
is really hard to not have you all with me.
But, we are only a tabernacle away from
each other. Even if you are not able to sit
in front a tabernacle in the Real Presence
of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, re-
member our Lord is truly present in your
soul by the gift of grace. So, if you cannot
come and kneel before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, then have your heart kneel before the Lord who
is present.”
The incredibly talented Hope Acquilano of Kitchen House Studio, remotely watching from home with her
children, was also moved by this sermon. And, she created this gorgeous watercolor for us to remember this
time we shared where our Church family was virtual and our hearts were united and simplified.
We have a limited number of prints signed by Fr Smith AND the artist, Hope Acquilano for sale from Kylee
Heap at a cost of $25. Proceeds benefit the communications budget (hint: we have no budget, so help!). To
purchase the signed copy, text Kylee at 864.266.8843!
Spring 2019 MAP Testing revealed Prince of Peace
Catholic School Students exceeded growth benchmarks in
math and reading moreso than students at other Diocesan
schools and Public/Charter schools. The school carries an
award as 2014 National Blue Ribbon School.
Students are equipped theologically to understand, value,
demonstrate and defend their Catholic faith within the
classroom and regular access to Mass and sacraments.
A recent article in the Greenville Journal [Sept 2019]
revealed Prince of Peace Catholic School to be in the
lowest 3rd of tuition rates across all private schools in
Greenville demonstrating tremendous value.
