On the Fi h Sunday of Lent, just before we begin to enter Holy Week, we are summoned to Bethany. If we had been friends of Mary, Lazarus, and Martha, and found out that Lazarus was gravely ill, we probably would have dropped everything to be with them. This was what was so surprising about the behavior of Jesus. Although he was their close friend, he chose to stay away, that God’s glory would be manifested. This is a persistent theme in John’s Gospel. Right to the very end, Jesus’ works were meant to give glory to the Father. As our Lenten journey reaches a crescendo, let us be mindful that, as people who have “put on Christ” in bap sm, we are also called, by our a tudes and ac ons, to give glory to God.

In his Gospel, John emphasizes that God is made manifest in even the most difficult and tragic circumstances. Over the last two Sundays, we have heard Jesus empha cally tell his disciples that neither disability nor death are obstacles to God’s life-giving touch. In that era, blindness was thought to be the result of sin. The only ques on was whether it was his own or his parents’. No, says Jesus, “it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him” (John 9:3). A er Lazarus’s sudden death, some of the townspeople all but accuse Jesus of failing to do something to prevent it. But Jesus had said that the illness and death “is for the glory of God” (John 11:4). Just as blindness was not the end for the man who came to believe in Jesus, death was not the end for Lazarus. Jesus made the divine manifest to both. In this world nothing is more powerful than death. It cannot be undone. It happens to everything and everyone who lives. Whether plant or animal, baby or elder, it is absolute and it is final. In this world. But all three readings assert God’s ul mate power over it. God will open our graves and have us rise from them. God will give life to our mortal bodies. God will bring us forth from the tomb. If God has this kind of power, how can any evil in this world conquer us? With the Spir-it dwelling in us, even death is overcome.

Some of us may have had an experience that felt like being released from a tomb. Perhaps it was a tomb of alcoholism or addic on. Perhaps it was a tomb of despair or hopelessness. Perhaps in our tomb we felt as if death were the only answer. There is no be er person to help those s ll buried in those tombs than someone who knows the way out. Heed Jesus’ words and work to remove the stones and bands of those s ll buried.

En el Quinto Domingo de Cuaresma, justo antes de entrar en la Semana Santa, somos llamados a Betania. Si hubiéramos sido amigos de María, Lázaro y Marta, y nos hubiéramos enterado que Lázaro estaba gravemente enfermo, probablemente lo ha-bríamos dejado todo para estar con ellos. Eso es lo más sorpren-dente del comportamiento de Jesús. Pese a que era su amigo cercano, eligió mantenerse alejado, para que la gloria de Dios se manifestara. Este es un tema persistente en el Evangelio de Juan. Hasta el mismo final, las obras de Jesús son para dar gloria al Padre. A medida que nuestra jornada de Cuaresma llega a su apogeo, recordemos que, como personas que “se han reves do de Cristo” en el Bau smo, también somos llamados a dar gloria a Dios en nuestras ac tudes y acciones.

En el Evangelio Juan enfa za que Dios se manifiesta aun en las circunstancias más di ciles y trágicas. Du-rante los dos domingos anteriores hemos escuchado a Jesús de-cirles enfá camente a sus discípulos que ni la discapacidad ni la muerte son obstáculos para la gracia vivificante de Dios. En esa era, la ceguera se veía como resultado del pecado. Lo único que se preguntaban si era debida al pecado de la persona afectada o al de sus padres. No, dice Jesús, es “para que en él se manifestaran las obras de Dios” (Juan 9, 3). Después de la muerte repen na de Lázaro algunos de los vecinos prác camente acusan a Jesús de no impedirla. Pero Jesús ha-bía dicho que la enfermedad y la muerte “servirá para la gloria de Dios” (Juan 11, 4). Así como la ceguera no fue el final para el hombre que llegó a creer en Jesús, así tampoco la muerte fue el final de Lázaro. Jesús hizo que la divinidad se ma- nifestara en ambos casos.

No existe nada más poderoso en este mundo que la muerte. No es reversible. Le pasa a todos y a todo lo que vive. Es absoluta y final, ya sea para planta, animal, bebé o anciano. Pero ene que ver con este mundo, porque las tres lectu-ras aseveran el poder defini vo de Dios sobre la muerte. Dios abrirá nuestros sepulcros y nos sacará de ellos. Dios le dará vida a nuestros cuerpos mortales. Dios nos hará salir de nuestros sepulcros. Si Dios ene esta clase de poder, ¿qué mal de este mundo pudiera vencernos? Con el Espíritu que habita en nosotros, hasta la muerte se puede vencer. Algunos de nosotros pudiéramos haber tenido una experiencia de sen rnos como si hubiéramos salido de un sepulcro. Tal vez fue el sepulcro del alcoholismo o la adicción. Quizás haya sido un sepulcro de desesperación o pesimismo. Tal vez en nuestro sepulcro nos sen amos como si la muerte fuera la única solución. No hay nadie mejor para ofrecerle ayuda a los que aún están enterrados en esos sepulcros que alguien que sabe cómo salir. Toma en serio las palabras de Jesús y esfuérzate por quitar la losa y los vendajes de los que siguen enterrados.

God, heavenly Father, look upon me and hear my prayer

during this holy Season of Lent. By the good works You inspire, help me to discipline my body

and to be renewed in spirit. Without You I can do nothing.

By Your Spirit help me to know what is right and to be eager in doing Your will.

Teach me to find new life through penance. Keep me from sin,

and help me live by Your commandment of love. God of love, bring me back to You.

Send Your Spirit to make me strong in faith and ac ve in good works.

May my acts of penance bring me Your forgiveness, open my heart to Your love,

and prepare me for the coming feast of the Resurrec on of Jesus.

Lord, during this Lenten Season, nourish me with Your Word of life

and make me one with You in love and prayer. Fill my heart with Your love

and keep me faithful to the Gospel of Christ. Give me the grace

to rise above my human weakness. Give me new life by Your Sacraments,

especially the Mass. Father, our source of life,

I reach out with joy to grasp Your hand; let me walk more readily in Your ways.

Guide me in Your gentle mercy, for le to myself I cannot do Your Will. Father of love, source of all blessings, help me to pass from my old life of sin

to the new life of grace. Prepare me for the glory of Your Kingdom.

I ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with You

and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever. Amen
