Mission Statement
We as a missionary community of faith, reflect upon the gospel values of Christ according to the teaching and tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. Our mission is to follow Christ by sharing our gifts of time, talent and dedication to one another by imitating Him, St. Paul and our founder Mgr. Joseph De Piro, giving Christian witness to our faith through our everyday lives in community.
2
Pardon and hope.
“so the Lord relented……” the Israelites, singularly chosen by God in Abraham, led out of the slavery of Egypt through His prophet Moses, sustained by divine providence in the desert, now begin to worship a golden calf which they fashioned at the very moment God was renewing his covenant with them atop Mt. Sinai.
The same theme of divine pardon is carried through in today´s second reading, from the first letter to Timothy. There, we are reminded that, like Paul, we in our arrogance, in our disbelief, in our many sins, nonetheless, can find forgiveness in Jesus. Moreover, we learn that Jesus came into the world precisely to save sinners - to save us.
We see the same theme again in today´s gospel, which is a brief trilogy about God´s wanting to forgive us. First, there is the parable of the Good Shepherd searching out the lone stray, then of the woman who loses a coin and finds it, and thirdly of the prodigal son who is received back by his father without prejudice, despite his sins.
Thus all the readings today remind us that not only does God forgive sins forever, but he welcomes sinners and wants to forgive - if only we sincerely want to return to him in contrition and resolution.
Surely this is one of the most attractive aspects of our Christian faith. To be forgiven sins we have committed: sins of unkindness, hatred, irreverence, dishonesty, secret sins as well as public sins, sins which have injured others. And not only to be forgiven, but to know for certain that we have been forgiven, to be free of all doubts about the matter.
24th Sunday in Ordinary Time—Year C
Our faith then is a religion of hope.
By faith we embrace not only what
God reveals to us about Himself,
but also what God pledges on our
behalf. Hope allows us to look forward confidently
to the fulfillment of these promises. In a larger
sense, hope reminds us that even given our
weaknesses or our tendency to fail, the loving,
merciful Savior stands even now at the final goal
destined for us and beckons us forward with His
grace. Therefore, hope means that we are not alone
facing a future of uncertainty, but that the living
Lord who wills that no one of us be lost, is at this
moment drawing us towards Himself, always
willing and ready to forgive us all those obstacles
that have caused a friction in our relationship with
the God of mercy and forgiveness. Amen.
- Fr. Manuel
