There was a man named Sundar, a convert to Christianity who decided to go to India to be a missionary and bear witness to others about Jesus. One day, late in the afternoon, Sundar was traveling on foot high in the Himalaya Mountains with a Buddhist monk. It was bitterly cold and darkness was rapidly starting to fall. The monk told Sundar they would be in danger of freezing to death if they did not reach the monastery before nightfall. As they crossed a narrow path above a steep cliff, a cry for help was heard. Deep down in the ravine a man had fallen and was severely injured. His leg was broken and, therefore, he could not walk. The monk warned Sundar, "Do not stop. God has brought this man to his fate. He must work it out by himself. That is the tradition. Let us hurry on and continue our journey before we perish." But Sundar replied, "It is my newfound tradition that God has brought me here to help my brother. I cannot abandon him, especially now." So, the monk set off through the snow which had started to fall heavily. Sundar climbed down to where the injured man was lying. Since the man had a broken leg, Sundar had to find some way to carry him. He brought with him a blanket from his knapsack and made a sling out of it. He got the man into the sling and hoisted him onto his back. Then together they began the arduous climb up to the path. After a long time, Sundar, was faint from fatigue and overheated from exertion, but he finally saw the lights from the monastery in the distance. Just then he took a step and stumbled, almost falling. He looked down and found that he had stumbled from an object lying in the path. He bent down on one knee and brushed the snow from the body of the Buddhist monk, who had frozen to death within sight of the monastery. Kneeling down, Sundar recalled a passage from Luke's Gospel: "Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it" (9:24). At that moment Sundar understood precisely what Jesus was saying and was glad that he had decided to "lose his life" for another. Years later, when Sundar had his own disciples, they asked him, "Master, what is life's most difficult task?" And Sundar replied, "To have no burden to carry."

“Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, . . . becoming obedient to the point

of death, even death on a cross.” We begin Holy Week today. It is a unique opportunity to reflect on how much we are loved. God could have simply decreed that forgiveness was given and he would begin over with human beings. But instead, he chose to enter into our human condition. Jesus understood everything we experienced, because he too experienced it. He knew about working hard every day, about sharing family life, about the sadness of losing a loved one. He shared the joys of friendship and the sadness that touches every life. He was even tempted as we are. But there was one difference. He chose always to be faithful to the will of his Father. And he chose to offer himself in our place on the cross so that we would never doubt the powerful love of God that forgives every sin. As we contemplate Jesus bearing the burden of the cross for us, we are forced to humbly consider the quality of our love for him. When we are unhappy or offended, do we complain and become angry, or embrace the burden of our little cross? When our life is happy and we are blessed, do we enjoy our good fortune, or do we accept the burden of using our gifts to help those in need around us? We know we could do more for God, but we are too busy or unwilling to change, and so we cannot be bothered to carry the burden of loving God more carefully and more completely. This week we are invited to participate again in the most precious moments of our life with God. He became one of us, he gave himself for us on the cross, and he remains present with us. Every day Jesus is inviting us to join him, to carry our burden. And because we are loved so much, that seems the least we can do to show how much we love him who gave away everything for us.

Había un hombre llamado Sundar, un convierto al cristianismo que decidió ir a India para ser misionero y dar testimonio a otros acerca de Jesús. Un día, por la tarde, Sundar viajaba a pie en las montañas del Himalaya con un monje budista. Estaba muy frío y la oscuridad rápidamente estaba cayendo. El monje le dijo a Sundar que estarían en peligro de morir congelados si no llegaban al monasterio antes del anochecer. Cuando estaban cruzando un estrecho sendero por encima de un acantilado, escucharon un grito de ayuda. En lo profundo de la barranca un hombre había caído y resultó gravemente herido. Su pierna estaba rota y, por lo tanto, él no podía caminar. El monje advirtió Sundar, "No te detengas. Dios ha traído este hombre a su suerte. Él mismo deber resolverlo. Esa es la tradición. ¡Vámonos con prisa y continuaremos nuestro viaje antes que perecemos." Pero Sundar respondió, "Es mi nueva tradición que Dios me ha traído aquí para ayudar a mi hermano. No puedo abandonarlo, especialmente ahora." Así que el monje siguió en el camino a través de la nieve que había comenzado a caer fuertemente. Sundar bajo hasta donde el hombre herido estaba. Desde que el hombre se había roto una pierna, Sundar tenía que encontrar alguna manera de llevarlo. Trajo una manta de su mochila y una eslinga. Puso al hombre en la eslinga y lo arbolo a su espalda. Luego juntos comenzaron la ardua subida hasta el camino. Después de un largo tiempo, Sundar, se sentía débil de la fatiga y recalentado de esfuerzo, pero finalmente vio las luces del monasterio en la distancia. Sundar tomó un paso y se tropezó, casi cayéndose. Miró hacia abajo y descubrió que se había tropezado con un objeto acostado en el camino. Se inclinó sobre una rodilla y cepillo la nieve desde el cuerpo del monje budista, quien había muerto congelado dentro de la vista del monasterio. Sundar arrodillándose, recordó un pasaje del evangelio de san Lucas: "Quien quiera salvar su vida, la perderá, pero quien pierda su vida por mi causa, la salvará" (9:24). En ese momento Sundar entendió exactamente lo que Jesús estaba diciendo y se alegró de que el había decidido "perder su vida" por otro. Años más después, cuando Sundar tenía sus propios discípulos, le preguntaron: "Maestro, ¿cuál es la tarea más difícil de la vida?" Y Sundar respondió, "No tener ninguna carga que llevar".

"Cristo Jesús, aunque él estaba en la forma de Dios, no reconocía la igualdad con Dios algo que habrá que aprovechar. Más bien, Él se despojó de sí mismo tomando la forma de siervo, . . . Haciéndose

obediente hasta la muerte, y la muerte en una cruz". Comenzamos la Semana Santa en el día de hoy. Es una oportunidad única para reflexionar sobre cuánto somos amados. Dios podría simplemente haber decretado el perdón que se da y que comenzaría de nuevo con los seres humanos. Pero en su lugar, escogió entrar en nuestra condición humana. Jesús comprendió todo lo que experimentamos, porque él también lo había experimentado. Él sabía acerca del trabajo duro cada día, acerca de compartir la vida familiar, de la tristeza de perder a un ser querido. Compartió las alegrías de la amistad y de la tristeza que afecta a la vida de cada uno. Él fue tentado como nosotros. Pero hay una diferencia. Él escogió a ser siempre fiel a la voluntad de su padre. Y él escogió de ofrecerse a sí mismo en nuestro lugar en la cruz para que pudiéramos nunca dudar el poderoso amor de Dios que perdona todo pecado. Cuando contemplamos a Jesús que asume la carga de la cruz por nosotros, estamos obligados a considerar humildemente la calidad de nuestro amor por él. Cuando estamos descontentos u ofendidos, nos quejamos y nos enojarnos, ¿o abrazamos la carga de nuestra pequeña cruz? Cuando nuestra vida es feliz y somos bendecidos, podemos disfrutar de nuestra buena fortuna, ¿o aceptamos la carga de usar nuestros dones para ayudar a aquellos en necesidad alrededor de nosotros? Sabemos que podríamos hacer más para Dios, pero estamos demasiado ocupados o no estamos dispuestos a cambiar, así que no podemos molestarnos de llevar la carga de amar a Dios con más cuidado y más completo. Esta semana estamos invitados a participar de nuevo en los más preciosos momentos de nuestra vida con Dios. Se hizo uno de nosotros, se entregó a sí mismo por nosotros en la cruz, y él sigue presente con nosotros. Cada día, Jesús nos invita a seguirlo, a llevar nuestra carga. Y porque nos amó tanto, es lo menos que podemos hacer para mostrar cuánto amamos a quien dio todo para nosotros.

La fiesta iniciara el sábado 27 de abril hasta el domingo 28 de abril, con el cierre de la Misa Solemne de las 4:00 p.m. y la Gran Procesión después de la Misa.
