Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception June 7, 2020

Corpus Christi Procession

On Thursday, June 7th, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception will celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi (The Body of Christ) in Extraordinary Form with a High Mass at 6:00 PM, followed by a Eucharistic Pro-cession (beginning around 7:00 PM) to the Old Catholic Cemetery (corner Common and Iris) and back to the Ca-thedral using the following streets: Bilbo, Kirby, Hodges Iris, Common, Pujo, Ryan (1 mile route). All are invited to participate! Bring your entire family. Why are we having a Eucharistic Procession? To build up the Kingdom of God. Pope St. John Paul II once wrote this with respect to the Holy Eucharist: “The Eucharist is truly a glimpse of heaven appearing on earth. It is a glorious ray of the heavenly Jerusalem which pierces the clouds of our history and lights up our jour-ney” (EE, 19). The presence of the Body and Blood of Our Lord will assist in the sanctification of our neighborhood and parish. We recall the words of Our Lord to the Apos-tles: There are many things impossible for men; but all things are possible with God (Mt. 19:26). Does the Church still teach that Eucharistic Proces-sions are important? Absolutely! Again, the words of St. John Paul II can guide us: “The devout participation of the faithful in the Eucha-ristic Procession on the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ [Corpus Christi] is a grace from the Lord which yearly brings joy to those who take part in it” (EE, 10). What should I do if I want to participate in the Corpus Christi Procession? After Communion, kneel while the Priest, assisted by the sacred ministers and the servers, exposes the Blessed Sacrament. As the sacred ministers and servers depart the church for the streets, remain kneeling until the Blessed Sacrament passes by. Then stand up and simply follow in line behind the Blessed Sacrament, the sacred ministers, and the servers for the procession.

What should I wear for the Procession? The route is approximately 1 mile, and it will likely be hot, so wear comfortable walking shoes and light colored clothes. A suggestion is to wear white clothes to reflect the sun’s rays. White is also the liturgical color for Corpus Christi. What should I do if I live along the route of the Corpus Christi Procession? It is fitting and laudable to decorate your house by putting up a Eucharistic banner (e.g., I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever [Jn. 6:51]), or by putting statues of Our Lord, Our Lady, and the Saints in prominent places (e.g., yard, windows, etc.). If you prefer to wait at home for the procession, it is proper to at least genuflect as the Blessed Sacrament passes. If possible, you might consider arrang-ing a place on which to kneel when Our Lord approaches. What else do I need to know? First, our involvement in this procession means that we are participating in supernatural realities. As is fitting for such an august occasion, the atmosphere will be festive and one of great joy. At the same time, however, we must be cognizant of the fact that It is the Lord (Jn. 21:7)! in Whose presence we shall be. The Eternal Word of God has hum-bled Himself to come among us, and to process through our streets. Consequently, we must imitate Our Lord’s humility by conducting ourselves with the utmost rever-ence, keeping before our eyes the fear of the Lord (Pro. 1:7). Second, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is a highly effective type of prayer. Each should form an intention(s) to pray for during the procession. Finally, you might con-sider bringing a bottle of water for the walk. The parish will have some on hand in case of an emergency.

Our Cathedral parishioner, Deacon Andy Derouen, will be ordained to the Priesthood on June 27, 2020. Admit-tance will be by invitation only. However, the Ordination Mass will be live streamed on YouTube and the Diocese web page. Father Derouen will celebrate his first Mass here at Immaculate Conception Cathedral at 1:30 PM on Sun-day, June 28, 2020. There will be a reception honoring Father Derouen at Immaculate Conception Cathedral School following the Mass.

The second set of assignments will be announced at the time of the priest-hood and diaconate ordinations, Saturday, June 27.]

Given the circumstances, Bishop Provost is providing this prayer for the use of the faithful:

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least into my heart. I embrace You as if You are already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. (You may make this Act of Spiritual Communion any-time you need it and as often as you need it.)

A personal letter of appreciation from Bishop Provost

June 1, 2020 Now that I have concluded my “Thoughts from the Bishop’s Chapel,” I wish to thank all of you who so graciously ex-pressed your gratitude for my humble efforts in this regard. When I began this effort 74 reflections ago, I had just an-nounced the temporary cessation of public worship in our churches due to the pandemic. I realized that many of you attend daily Mass and thought that you would appreciate a daily reflection to make up for the lack of a daily hom-ily. Therefore, the reflections were almost entirely based on the Gospel for the day. Appropriately, I thought, they began shortly before Holy Week and continued until Pentecost, the conclusion of Lent and the entire Easter Season. Pentecost marks not only the birthday of the Church but also a more accelerated return of our parish churches to public services. I look forward to returning to some predictability but would hope that we have learned something during this time of deprivation. What is that? That we should not take God’s gifts for granted. This begins with the Eucharist but includes every facet of our lives. Every friendship, family member, time at prayer, celebration of a Sacrament, meal together, quiet moment, social encounter—whatever is good—these are gifts from God. Christians are people of the Incarnation. The Word of God became Flesh in Jesus Christ. This is a sacramental reality. And the presence of God, through His Son Jesus Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit, shows itself in every moment of our lives, beginning with our Sacraments but continuing in the living of our Chris-tian lives. Everything that is good, true, wholesome, just, loving, and virtuous is an occasion to see God at work. God bless all of you!

ATTENDING MASS DURING THE PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS/REMINDERS/SUGGESTIONS

Per Bishop Provost: “The dispensation from the

obligation to attend Holy Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligations remains in effect. Those experiencing symptoms should seek medical at-tention and remain at home.”

If you are not feeling well, or if someone in your

family is ill, please do not attend Mass. Holy water is provided in small containers at each

entrance. Please limit one per family so that eve-ryone may get one.

To adhere to social distancing, do not sit in the

roped off pews. It is highly recommended, but not mandatory, that

a mask be worn. Please avoid touching the pews or other church

surfaces unnecessarily (ushers/volunteers must thoroughly disinfect after each Mass).

There will be separate communion lines for re-

ceiving in the hand or on the tongue. No singing by the congregation is allowed. No missalettes. The sign of peace is temporarily suspended. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are

not to distribute Communion. Do not use the drinking fountain in the foyer of

the day chapel.

Prayer for Safety in Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, Hear the hum-ble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quie-tude. You are still the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and ani-mated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heav-enly Jerusalem where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen

Salus Populi Romani Protectress and Health of the Roman People

Prayer against the Coronavirus

O Mary, you shine continuously along our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman people, know what we need, and we trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee, joy and cele-bration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us, He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every dan-ger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
