To Worship God is to Taste Heaven and to be Transfigured

So often, when reading the account of the Transfiguration, we can focus on what

happened to Jesus: “His face shone like the sun, his clothes became white as light.” Yet what we cannot forget is the dramatic way in which this experience of God Himself changed Peter, James and John. In that moment that Jesus was transfigured and God spoke to them saying, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him,” these men were changed. They were able to experience and to taste a foreshadowing of the happiness and the joy of heaven. And it is this experience, this incredible taste, that transforms them into men of courage and conviction, not afraid to walk down the mountain into the valley of tears that awaits them.

Yet, how can I have that very experience of God that can change me, transform my weaknesses, encourage my steps, and strengthen my conviction of faith? Well, we too can have these occasions of grace by worshipping God. For you see, by worshipping God we are changed, transformed, encouraged, and strengthened. And so often when we worship these transformations occur without our even realizing it. In fact, by our worship we enter into the very mystery of Christ’s transfiguration, receiving the power of God’s grace that can dry any tear. But what does it really mean to worship God? It means to acknowledge God’s worth, His power, His Goodness, and His truth. And why is it we worship God? Pope Francis reminds us that “When we do not worship God, we end up worshiping ourselves. Worship means concentrating on what is essential. In worship, we learn to reject what should not be worshiped: the god of money, the god of consumerism, the god of pleasure, the god of success, the god of self. Worship means bending low before the Most High and to discover in his presence that life’s greatness does not consist in having, but in loving. Worship means realizing that you and God belong together to one another. It means being able to speak to Him freely and intimately. It means discovering that, in order to pray, it is enough to say: ‘My Lord and my God,’ and to let ourselves be pervaded by His tender love. Worship is an act of love that transforms one’s life. In worship, we allow Jesus to heal and change us … to kindle light amid our darkness, to grant us strength in weakness and courage amid trials.” “Worship means putting the Lord at the center, not ourselves. It is means giving things their rightful place, and giving the first place to God. Worship means making God’s plan more important than our personal time, our entitlements and our spaces.”

My friends, each and every time we gather here to worship God, we are transformed by His love in ways we may never fully realize. At the conclusion of Mass, we go forth from this “holy mountain” having experienced and tasted a foreshadowing of the happiness and the joy of heaven. And it is this experience, this incredible taste, that transforms us into men and women of courage and conviction, not afraid to walk down the mountain into whatever “valleys” await us!
