Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, Pray for Us

SACRED LITURGY

“The sacraments are Jesus Christ's presence in us. So it is important for us to go to Confession and receive Holy Communion” -- Pope Francis

In the Company of Pope Francis

FROM YOUR PASTOR

On July 11th, we welcomed our Candidates and Catechumens into the Catholic Church with these words:

WELCOME HOME!

What is Today, you become a Disciple of Jesus Christ!

And I want to thank Lauren, your sponsors, your family, and your friends whose lives bear witness to their faith, and why they are Catholics.

Saint Paul teaches that to be a Christian means to live in a radically different way than the way offered by the secular society that surrounds us. Being a Christian means acquiring a new mind and heart—the mind and heart of Jesus Christ —as we journey toward God’s Kingdom.

Over the last nine months, through a very difficult time in our World, together we have encountered Jesus through Sacred Scripture, immersion into the Tradition of the Catholic Christian community, and the discovery of the Risen Jesus in the Seven Sacraments. This beautiful ancient Rite that we experience today...in its original order – BAPTISM CONFIRMATION EUCHARIST... is a true conversion, a transformation...from being of the world to being of God...the culmination of your study, exploration, faith-sharing, and faith formation.

And it began with YOU... through the movement of the Holy Spirit. YOU came here seeking more in your Spiritual Journey. Then YOU were accepted into the Worship-ing Community. Then YOU spent time learning and being formed in the Traditions and Doctrine of the Catholic Church. Then YOU were chosen to receive the Sacra-ments of Initiation.

And now YOU, with YOUR NEW CHURCH FAMILY, will continue to explore the deep mystery of our Faith and help build the reign of God on Earth as INTENTION-AL DISCIPLES!

PRAISE GOD!

On July 19th, we welcomed our Restored Order Candidates with these words:

CONGRATULATIONS!

Today, you receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit in your Sacraments of Initiation within the Catholic Church!

Upon his arrival in the Archdiocese of Denver, Archbishop Aquila wanted to restore the Sacraments of Initiation to their original order. This beautiful ancient Rite, begun with your Baptism, achieves its culmination in the Sacraments of CONFIRMATION and EUCHARIST. Why did the Archbishop restore the order…because in the World and Culture of today, our young people require the Fullness of the Holy Spirit as early in their young life as possible given the moral and ethical pressures they face in the World around them.

And today, through the movement of the Holy Spirit in YOU, and Jesus present in YOU through the Gift of the Eucharist, your Spiritual Journey will continue. Through

Page 4: Cathedral Basilica of the Imma culate Conception … · 07/07/2020  · Cathedral Basilica of the Imma culate Conception 1535 Logan St. Denver, CO 80203 Telephone: 303-831-7010 -

.

… And then we invited Pope Francis to accompany us in these beautiful Liturgies...

Today is NOT THE END of your Journey, but the BEGINNING OF A LIFETIME JOURNEY. The same SPIRIT that became part of you at Baptism is now fully alive in you...to bring YOU to the next level -- a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST...BODY, BLOOD, SOUL, AND DIVINITY...a relationship with the One who knew YOU from the Beginning of Time...the One who wants YOU to spend eternity with HIS HEAVENLY FATHER.

TODAY, THE HOLY TRINITY IS ALIVE IN YOU!

But this Journey continues to unfold...with and through the Holy Spirit...

That is why ALL we do begins with the Sign of the Cross.

Pope Francis tells us that in BAPTISM...The cross is the badge that shows who we are: our speaking, thinking, looking, working is under the sign of the cross, that is under the sign of the love of Jesus to the end. ...Receive the sign of the cross on your ears to hear the voice of the Lord”; “On the eyes to see the splendor of the face of God”; “On the mouth, to answer the word of God”; “On the chest, because Christ dwells through faith in your hearts”; “On the shoulders, to support the gentle yoke of Christ."

YOU and I are marked with the Cross -- the one Jesus carried and the personal Cross he asks each of us to carry -- as the outward sign of the Christian way of facing life.

But this Journey continues to unfold...through the Holy Spirit...

Pope Francis reminds us of the Power of the Holy Spirit in Reconciliation...First of all, we must remember that the principal agent in the forgiveness of sins is the Holy Spirit . In his first appearance to the Apostles, in the Upper Room, the Risen Jesus made the gesture of breathing on them saying: “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” The breath of Jesus, accompanied by the words with which he communicates the Spirit, signifies the transmission of life, the new life reborn from forgiveness. But before making this gesture of breathing and transmitting the Holy Spirit, Jesus reveals the wounds in his hands and side: these wounds represent the price of our salvation. The Holy Spirit brings us the God’s pardon “by passing through” Jesus’ wounds. Jesus gave his life for our peace, for our joy, for the gift of grace in our souls, for the forgiveness of our sins. It is very very beautiful to look at Jesus in this way! Let us not forget that God never tires of forgiving us...to rise again continuously and to resume our journey.

It is the Sacrament of Reconciliation that determines the efficacy of all the other Sacraments in your life. The State of Grace in your Soul greets each Sacrament. If your Soul is clouded with sin, you diminish the Spiritual Nourishment God wants to give you. GRACE BUILDS UPON GRACE.

But this Journey continues to unfold...through the Holy Spirit...

Pope Francis declares the efficacy of the Holy Anointing of CONFIRMATION...The Spirit changes us! The Holy Spirit is truly transforming us, and through us he also wants to transform the world in which we live. Let us open the doors to the Spirit, let ourselves be guided by him, and allow God’s constant help to make us new men and women, inspired by the love of God which the Holy Spirit bestows on us! How beautiful it would be if each of you, every evening, could say: Today at school, at home, at work, guided by God, I showed a sign of love towards one of my friends, my parents, an older person! How beautiful! Remain steadfast in the journey of faith, with firm hope in the Lord. This is the secret of our journey! He gives us the courage to swim against the tide. Jesus gives us this courage! With him we can do great things; he will give us the joy of being his disciples, his witnesses. Commit yourselves to great ideals, to the most important things. We Christians were not chosen by the Lord for little things; push onward toward the highest principles. Stake your lives on noble goals!

It is the Sacrament of Confirmation which brings to fulfillment in YOU the Holy Spirit that fills YOU with the Courage for the JOURNEY OF YOUR LIFE. In this Sacra-ment, YOU are anointed with the Holy Spirit who keeps YOU connected to Jesus and makes YOU want to be like Him as you accept the MISSION GOD PLANNED FOR YOUR LIFE FROM THE BEGINNING OF TIME...allowing Him to work WITH YOU and THROUGH YOU...for yourself and others.

But this Journey continues to unfold...through the Holy Spirit...

Pope Francis reminds us of the Reality Present in the EUCHARIST...The Eucharist brings us the Father’s faithful love, which heals our sense of being orphans. It gives us Jesus’ love, which transformed a tomb from an end to a beginning, and in the same way can transform our lives. It fills our hearts with the consoling love of the Holy Spirit, who never leaves us alone and always heals our wounds. Every time we receive him, he reminds us that we are precious, that we are guests he has invited to his ban-quet, friends with whom he wants to dine. And not only because he is generous, but because he is truly in love with us. He sees and loves the beauty and goodness that we are. He did not just leave us words, for it is easy to forget what we hear. He did not just leave us the Scriptures, for it is easy to forget what we read. He did not just leave us signs, for we can forget even what we see. He gave us Food, for it is not easy to forget something we have actually tasted. He left us Bread in which he is truly present, alive and true, with all the flavor of his love.”

Holy Communion, THE EUCHARIST, is the SOURCE AND SUMMIT of Your Faith. The REAL PRESENCE OF JESUS in the Eucharist satisfies the deepest desires of your heart for the One who loves you, for the One who saved you, for the One who intercedes for you, and for the One who knows you better than you know our self.

But this Journey continues to unfold...through the Holy Spirit...

Our Readings today tell us...

> I will sprinkle clean water upon you to cleanse you from all your impurities…I will give you a new heart…I will put my spirit within you...

> For a dead person has been absolved from sin...

> That repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached in his name to all the nations…you are witnesses of these things...

This is YOU...A beloved Child of God, chosen for Christ, living in God's Mercy, re-flected in his Love -- the Body and Blood of his Son in the Eucharist, to give YOU the Spiritual Nourishment to be his DISCIPLE in your everyday life...

As we accompany each other on the path that leads to God's Glory...

LIVE IT!

+May God Bless You and Keep You+

Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

That King Soloman. What a smooth operator. He somehow knew that to ask the Creator of the Universe for some material thing was not the right response to the invitation to ask God for something. Besides, what more could he possibly want? He had 700 wives and 300 concubines. He had a huge palace, loaded with servants. He had legendary horse stables, and the gold he amassed through taxa-tion would be worth 2 trillion in today’s money.

But still. This obviously mercenary man had the wisdom to ask God for a listening heart. That’s pretty good, since greed begets greed, and is never satisfied. He had the wisdom to ask for wisdom, and so was given more wisdom.

And you know what? He was on to something. At this moment in history, the pearl of greatest price is the person who can help us all discern whether to open schools in the fall, whether the first vaccine to come to market will be the cure for the virus, whether the stock market is going to plunge before (or after?) the election. And then there’s the election.

What would you ask of God, if given the same offer? I’ll bet it wouldn’t be material things at all. I’ll bet it would be for health, and healing, for all your loved ones. I’ll bet it would be for wise leaders to guide our country through its present seismic upheavals. I’ll bet it would be for the wisdom to see things as God sees, and the grace to then act accordingly.

St. Benedict urged his followers to listen with the ear of their hearts. Lovely. Okay God. I’ll take a listening heart too, thank you.

With whom in your life do you activate your listening heart?

SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Saint Philip Neri, Pray for Us

Saint of the Week

Saint Alphonsus Ligouri Moral theology, Vatican II said, should be more thoroughly nourished by Scripture, and show the nobility of the Christian vocation of the faithful and their obligation to bring forth fruit in charity for the life of the world. Alphonsus, declared patron of moral theologians by Pius XII in 1950, would rejoice in that statement.

In his day, Alphonsus fought for the liberation of moral theology from the rigidity of Jansenism. His moral the-ology, which went through 60 editions in the century following him, concentrated on the practical and con-crete problems of pastors and confessors. If a certain legalism and minimalism crept into moral theology, it should not be attributed to this model of moderation and gentleness.

At the University of Naples, Alphonsus received a doc-torate in both canon and civil law by acclamation, at the age of 16, but he soon gave up the practice of law for apostolic activity. He was ordained a priest, and con-centrated his pastoral efforts on popular parish mis-sions, hearing confessions, and forming Christian groups.

He founded the Redemptorist congregation in 1732. It was an association of priests and brothers living a com-mon life, dedicated to the imitation of Christ, and work-ing mainly in popular missions for peasants in rural areas. Almost as an omen of what was to come later, he found himself deserted after a while by all his original companions except one lay brother. But the congrega-tion managed to survive and was formally approved 17 years later, though its troubles were not over.

Alphonsus’ great pastoral reforms were in the pulpit and confessional—replacing the pompous oratory of the time with simplicity, and the rigorism of Jansenism with kindness. His great fame as a writer has somewhat eclipsed the fact that for 26 years he traveled up and down the Kingdom of Naples preaching popular missions.

He was made bishop at age 66 after trying to reject the honor, and at once instituted a thorough reform of his diocese.

His greatest sorrow came toward the end of his life. The Redemptorists, precariously continuing after the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, had difficulty in getting their Rule approved by the Kingdom of Naples. Alphonsus acceded to the condition that they possess no property in common, but with the connivance of a high Redemptorist official, a royal official changed the Rule substantially. Alphonsus, old, crippled and with very bad sight, signed the document, unaware that he had been betrayed. The Re-demptorists in the Papal States then put themselves under the pope, who withdrew those in Naples from the jurisdiction of Alphonsus. It was only after his death that the branches were united.

At 71, Alphonsus was afflicted with rheumatic pains which left incurable bending of his neck. Until it was straightened a little, the pressure of his chin caused a raw wound on his chest. He suffered a final 18 months of “dark night” scruples, fears, temptations against every article of faith and every virtue, interspersed with intervals of light and relief, when ecstasies were frequent.

Alphonsus is best known for his moral theology, but he also wrote well in the field of spiritual and dogmatic theology. His Glories of Mary is one of the great works on that subject, and his book Visits to the Blessed Sacrament went through 40 editions in his lifetime, greatly influencing the practice of this devotion in the Church.
