“When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.

And when they found him across the sea they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you get here?’ Jesus answered them and said,

‘Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.

Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.

For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.’ So they said to him, ‘What can we do to accomplish the works of God?’

Jesus answered and said to them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.’

Facilities Manager for the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph and Cathedral Center This position requires someone with relevant experience and general knowledge of plumbing, electrical, mechan-ical and other systems. This employee must have the ability to do simple repairs and regular maintenance. Effective interaction with vendors and the Diocese of San Jose Facilities Manager is essential. Along with the technical knowledge supervisory skills are required for two other employees in the department. All of the janitorial duties and the grounds are main-tained by this department. We are looking for someone who is flexible and works well with a lot of different people. The ability to handle many projects at the same time is necessary. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigrating to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Wash-ington where the “pious ladies,” as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the presi-dent of Georgetown University, to begin a religious com-munity. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s.The unique vision of this order fol-lowed a sensible routine, more flexible than most traditions, while accepting widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation began without reference to the “rule” of the Order. Most European convents had been lost under the “reign of terror,” and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially estab-lished the monastery. The Georgetown nuns had an educa-tional mission, even though they discovered in the “rule” that such work was off-limits for the contemplative life. In Amer-ica, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States. —Rev. Desde su llegada a América en 1683 el indomable Hermano Menor trazó caminos para llevar el Evangelio de Jesucristo a los nativos. Él emprendía sus caminos al estilo de los primeros misioneros seráficos de dos en dos, a pie, descalzo, ali-mentado sólo por virtud de la generosidad de los fieles, pasando las noches donde pudiera, armado sólo de un cru-cifijo, un bastón y su libro de oraciones y cantando mien-tras caminaba. De esta manera propagó la fe caminando hacia el norte llegando a la Bahía del Espíritu Santo en el Misisipí; y hacia el sur, llegando al istmo de Panamá. Hoy aprendemos que la muchedumbre se ha dado cuenta de la partida de Je-sús y sus discípulos y por tanto los busca en Cafarnaúm. En el siguiente dialogo entre Jesús y la gente, Jesús revela el don de sí mismo que él da en

la Eucaristía. Hoy hay cuatro intercambios entre Jesús y la gente. En el primer, el pueblo que ya siguió a Jesús a Cafarnaúm, pregunta: “Rabino, ¿Cuándo llegaste?” Jesús contesta al identificar su motivo por perseguirlo. Ya se les dio de comer pero Jesús los desafía para que vean más allá del cumplimiento de sus necesidades materiales. Debían buscar a Jesús porque él les puede dar la vida eterna. Al iniciar el segundo diálogo, pare-ce que la gente esté en camino a aceptar a Jesús y su misión. Le piden a Jesús lo que él les acaba de decir que justamente han encontrado: “Señor danos siempre de ese pan.” Jesús contesta sencillamente que él mis-mo es el Pan de Vida que ellos buscan, que saciará ca-da hambre y sed. Today we learn that the crowd has noticed the departure of Jesus and his disciples and so seeks them out in Capernaum. In the dialogue that follows between Jesus and the crowds, Jesus unfolds for us the gift of himself that he gives in the Eucharist. Today, there are four exchanges between

Jesus and the crowd. In the first, the crowd, having fol-lowed Jesus to Capernaum, asks: “Rabbi, when did you get here?” Jesus replies by naming their motivation in pursuing him. They have been fed yet Jesus challenges them to see beyond the fulfillment of their material needs. They ought to be seeking out Jesus because he can give them eternal life. As the second dialogue begins, it seems that the crowd might be on their way to accepting Jesus and his mission. They ask: “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” Jesus replies that they must have faith in the one sent from God. But in the third dialogue, the crowd asks

Jesus for a sign so that they might know that Jesus is from God. How strange this sounds since Jesus has just fed more than 5000 people. But the crowd cannot see beyond the surface of the sign. They identify Jesus with Moses, as if to say, as Moses gave the people manna in the desert, give us a sign so that we will know that you are from God. They are not realizing that God is standing before them. Jesus corrects their misinterpretation, saying that the manna re-ceived by their ancestors came from God. In the bread that they have received from Jesus, they have received physical nourishment and also spiritual nourishment, bread for eter-nal life. The conclusion of the dialogue reveals the crowd’s blindness. They ask for what Jesus has just told them they have found: “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus answers plainly that he himself is the Bread of Life they seek, who will satisfy every hunger and thirst. We understand these statements better when we remember that God revealed his name to the people of Israel as “I am,” as Yahweh. Jesus is now claiming this name for himself. Loyola Press

S aint of the Week The Story of the Dedication of the Saint Mary Major Basilica

First raised at the order of Pope Liberius in the mid-fourth century, the Liberian basilica was rebuilt by Pope Sixtus III shortly after the Council of Ephesus affirmed Mary’s title as Mother of God in 431. Rededicated at that time to the Mother of God, St. Mary Major is the largest church in the world honoring God through Mary. Standing atop one of Rome’s seven hills, the Esquiline, it has survived many restorations without losing its character as an early Roman basilica. Its interior retains three naves divided by colon-nades in the style of Constantine’s era. Fifth-century mosa-ics on its walls testify to its antiquity. St. Mary Major is one of the four Roman basilicas known as patriarchal ca-thedrals in memory of the first centers of the Church. St. John Lateran represents Rome, the See of Peter; St. Paul Outside the Walls, the See of Alexandria, allegedly the see presided over by Mark; St. Peter’s, the See of Constantino-ple; and St. Mary’s, the See of Antioch, where Mary is sup-posed to have spent most of her later life. One legend, unre-ported before the year 1000, gives another name to this feast: Our Lady of the Snows. According to that story, a wealthy Roman couple pledged their fortune to the Mother of God. In affirmation, she produced a miraculous summer snowfall and told them to build a church on the site. The legend was long celebrated by releasing a shower of white rose petals from the basilica’s dome every August 5.Theo-logical debate over Christ’s nature as God and man reached fever pitch in Constantinople in the early fifth century. The chaplain of Bishop Nestorius began preaching against the title Theotokos, “Mother of God,” insisting that the Virgin was mother only of the human Jesus. The people of Constanti-nople virtually revolted against their bishop’s refutation of a cherished belief. When the Council of Ephesus refuted Nestorius, believers took to the streets, enthusiastically chant-ing, “Theotokos! Theotokos!”

En idioma italiano, es la Basilica di Santa Maria Maggio-re, también conocida como Basilica di Santa Maria della Neve y Basílica Liberiana es una basílica católica situada en Roma. Es una de las cuatro basílicas mayores y una de las cinco basílicas patriarcales asociadas con la Pentar-quía: San Juan de Letrán, San Lorenzo Extramuros, San Pedro, San Pablo Extramuros y Santa María la Mayor. La Basílica Liberiana es uno de los tituli, presidida por un patrón —en este caso, el papa Liberio— que alojó a las mayores congregaciones de los primeros cristianos en Ro-ma. El alzado, en cambio, no se mantiene en su esta-do original debido a los varios proyectos de construcción adicionales (casi todas intentando imitar el estilo primiti-vo) y los daños del terremoto de 1348.El nombre de la iglesia contiene dos términos grandiosos: el de basílica mayor, en oposición a una basílica menor, y el de Virgen María. La Basílica es la iglesia más grande e importante de las dedicadas en Roma al culto mariano. Después de que el papado de Aviñón acabase formalmente y los papas re-gresaran a Roma, la Basílica de Santa María la Mayor se convirtió en residencia temporal de los papas debido al

estado de deterioro en que se encon-traba el Palacio de Letrán. La resi-dencia papal se trasladó posterior-mente al palacio del Vaticano en lo que actualmente es la Ciudad del Vaticano. En la Basílica están se-pultados varios papas, entre ellos Clemente VIII, Pablo V y san Pío V. La basílica es una de las iglesias que se deben visitar en el peregrinaje de las siete iglesias de Roma para alcanzar la indulgencia plenaria en Año Santo. En 1990 fue incluida en la lista del Patrimonio de la Humanidad en Europapor la Unesco, con el número de identi-ficación 91-004.
